Standing tall in the Piazza del Campidoglio, this equestrian statue depicts the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius who ruled from 161 to 180 AD. He was the last emperor of the Pax Romana.
The statue is 14 feet tall. You can't miss it as it is in the very center of the Piazza in between the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo. The great ruler is on his horse that has three of its feet on the ground. he has one hand extended is a gesture called "Adlocutio" that is how a general addresses his army and legions. However, he is without weapons or armor as a bringer of peace.
Note that this is a copy that was made in 1981. The original was starting to get weathered and damaged from being outside. The original is in the Musei Capitolini (Capitoline Museum), https://www.yelp.com/biz/musei-capitolini-roma.
