My most recent visit to this store was unfortunate. I have been shopping here for many years and I always love the store. I stopped by to pick up something new and expected to shop around. I was a bit put off by their policy of not letting anyone in unless they know what they want, but I had a pretty good idea of something of interest so I went with it. The person who was helping me proceeded to talk about his wife and ask if I have a husband. When I said I had a partner, it was assumed to be a man. I went ahead and made my purchase but am so put off by the heteronormativity that I will not return. DISCLAIMER **** I wanted to give this store NO STARS***** Older white male (who I assume is the owner) was very disrespectful, homophobic and took an aggressive stance whenever he came out to talk to us. Nobody in my group was rude to this man nor being difficult to work with. Everybody was polite and was simply just trying to purchase some heels. Anybody who identifies as LGBTQIA should avoid this store ran by an individual who uses micro aggressions. Besides the blatant homophobia, the communication style the older white male utilized was defensive and aggressive from the start. Business owners should not treat customers who walked in to inquire information about an item as trash. The tone of his voice, the word choices he utilized, and his nonverbal style painted a clear picture to me: he was uncomfortable because we were 3 men that identified as queer. He spent a good 15-20 minutes arguing with us that we wouldn't fit a size 13 heel.... During that time he could've done the following: 1) Gotten the heel 2) Let us try it, 3) Act accordingly depending on if the heel fit or not. We KNEW we could fit a size 12-13 heel, despite it being narrow. We already have several heels that looked IDENTICAL to the heels on display. In my GRADUATE Organizational Rhetoric course I read a book titled "The Mcdonaldization of Society", where it discusses the success McDonalds achieved by following 4 specific elements. One of the elements discussed was efficiency, something your business lacked. I HIGHLY suggest that you read this book because I feel that it would help you in future interactions with customers. Most importantly, I felt disrespected because he invaded my PERSONAL space, which made me feel defensive. I politely expressed that I needed more personal space between us and I MOVED myself but he still proceeded to do the same thing. Your motive behind this was to intimidate me, but why would I be intimidated from an ignorant old man when I'm young and hot? Idk I just thought that was weird. (It's on camera you stepping into my space, trying to intimidate me :) Anyways, you should never invade anyones personal space because you might run into the wrong person one day that will escalate the situation even further. It's extremely unprofessional and as an "educated" man you should know this. Overall, the owner is a homophobic man who does not know how to handle interactions with customers, or specifically customers who aren't male/straight/and white. His intercultural competence is clearly low, which hinders his interactions with customers who are POC, LGBTQIA. His communication style was aggressive and did not make his customers feel included. Inclusivity is a valuable asset to have in a business, as it will help YOU make more money. Despite the older white male claiming he was "highly educated", it seems like he needs to go back to school to learn about DIVERSITY & INCLUSION. After I graduate with my masters next semester, I will gladly come back and do that favor for you if you want :). This must have happened several times before since the employees walking us out was apologizing. So I had opted out of posting an update, but the business popped up in my email and I do not want people to be misled. Yes there was the doorbell thing, but if you are short staffed I get it. I did not wait long...less than a minute. My issue was with the purse policy. Perhaps this policy should be revisited to allow small bags. I went with my small crossbody and was advised I needed to leave it in my car. My issue lies in the fact that my crossbody was packed with items I needed such as my keys, phone, and wallet. It was the middle of the day, around 3:30, and I just needed one item from the store. As I stated in my review before, this is a questionable part of town, so I decided not to leaving the store was easier than leaving my purse.
