The Bunker was very fun! We had a group of six people and didn't escape, but we thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. This theme was very cool and had a variety of mental and physical challenges for different types of people. The puzzles were very diverse which is always good. There was enough for everyone to do - we had some beginners - but I'm guessing advanced teams could have several fewer people. I would say this theme is at the intermediate level. Overall, we had a fun experience. The room was nicely put together and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The area might be a little sketchy we escaped that area alive. read more

Such a fun experience!! My group did "The Bunker", which was both fun and difficult! We made it out in 62 minutes, sadly not actually making it out in the 60 min time but we were sooo close!! I would highly recommend this escape room experience. Our group of three thoroughly enjoyed playing The Alchemist! The puzzles were well thought out, challenging and fun. A great place to solve some puzzles with friends. My group did the Society room and boy it was a lot of fun! We struggled a lot but luckily we got a some hints from the staff so we were able to make it out in the end. I think one of the defining factors of Escape Oakland is difficulty of the rooms and staff. Overall, the staff was really nice and helpful and the difficulty of the room wasn't off the charts but it wasn't super easy as well. I'd say there was a good balance of difficulty and ease so that the overall experience was much more enjoyable. I would recommend this place to anybody new to escape rooms because I think this is a great starting point read more

The only thing really different about this place is that you do not get hints unless they feel that you for sure need them. I actually liked this because it put more suspense into the game. My best friend and I came here while visiting Oakland for the day and we left being pretty disappointed. We booked 3 of their 4 rooms as we are enthusiasts and like to do as many as possible when going to a new venue. We unfortunately had an issue with each room. First we did Spy Game and one of the locks was already opened up, which means the room was not set up properly before having us enter. Not a big deal, at first, because mistakes happen and we are all human so I understand. We still had a fun time doing the room otherwise. The only other issue was that a couple of the answers to things were very random and it seems you would need to ask for a clue otherwise you wouldn't get it. Second we did The Alchemist and 2 mins into the room we see that another lock is already undone. So AGAIN, they didn't properly set up the room before we entered. I wasn't angry at the point but was definitely going to say something after we finished. We went through the game and again there were some puzzles that just didn't make sense unless you asked for a clue. After we finished I told the gamemaster that we have done 2 rooms now and both were NOT set up properly before we entered and his response was, "some people like that because it's like an advantage." I paused because I couldn't tell if he was serious. I was trying to nicely give feedback and tell him that they weren't doing their jobs correctly but it didn't matter what I said because it just seemed like everything was going in one ear and out the other. Thirdly we did The Bunker and ONCE AGAIN there was a lock already unlocked. At that point we were over it and upset. We finished the room and left being very disappointed and upset. In summary, I just think the staff just either isn't well trained or just doesn't care honestly. All three rooms weren't set up properly and asking for clues was frustrating as we had to wait a little while before a response on a couple different occasions. And to top it off I tried to give feedback to help them out and it didn't seem to be acknowledged or cared about that our experience wasn't the best it could be. Not one sorry was said. Had a great time at Escape Oakland. Friday night. Chose the Society room. The 4 of us didn't really beat the clock but got out in 60 minutes & 1 second!!! We had an 8:15 appt and arrived alittle early, so Miss Lady (Imani) let us go in a little early. She was so positive and fun. Miss Lady quickly explained the rules and set us "free" in the room. Honestly, we struggled for the first 15 minutes ( with no clues from Miss Lady) but once she gave the first clue we were in ot to win it. Great riddles and clues kept us on our toes. The second room we "found" was even better than the first...great puzzles, codes, etc. We all had a wonderful time and will be returning to Escape Oakland. And next time we will be out in less than 45!! LET'S GO!!!! read more

Went there for a birthday party and it was pretty epic! I did THE SOCIETY, and it was a very interesting plot. The location is alright, and there's also a police station right across from it, so it's quite safe. This business offered unlimited hints, so it was pretty awesome! One of the props broke, which was a bummer because we saw the answer, but other than that, def recommend it! I came here this week with my coworkers for a team-building event. We had a really great time. We split into two teams of 5. The lobby had a lot of fun games to play while we waited for the rooms to be set up. The one-person staff was super friendly, explained the rules clearly, and got us enthused for the room. They offer unlimited clues, which was great for a bunch of newbies to escape rooms. We did the bunker room and got out with 7 minutes to spare. We had a lot of fun trying to figure out the clues. Even though we asked for a lot of clues, it was still challenging and we really enjoyed our time. All of us were surprised by how much fun we had and agreed we would want to come back another time. This was our first escape room, which our family did for our 11 year old's birthday. It was SO FUN. We chose Escape Oakland specifically because it was close (we live in Oakland) and because you can do the rooms as a private group, which we preferred for Covid safety. The directions were clear and it was challenging--we leaned a lot on the clues. The staff member who supported us was great, and even gave us an extra 5 minutes to finish when we ran out of time but were close to completing the task. We did The Society, which is rated as the easiest. I can't wait to go back and try another one. read more

I did Escape Oakland's newest room, The Spy Game, today and it was very challenging but also quite fun. It's their toughest room, with an 8-10% escape rate. (There seems to have been some misinformation on here stemming from another reviewer's description of the room difficulties based on their subjective opinion, but the website posts the % escape rates for each room.) I'd recommend The Spy Game for groups of experienced escape roomers. If your team has first-timers, you might want to consider one of their easier rooms instead. I think first-timers might feel a little frustrated by this one. It's not the flashiest room, but there are a ton of puzzles to chew on and lot of variety in types of puzzles. I think this is a great room to try if you're someone who is really in it for the puzzles and a good challenge. I'm not as into rooms that have Hollywood-movie-set-esque decorations but easy puzzles, so I'm glad I chose this one. I was on the fence about giving them a 4 or a 5, but settled on 5 because they were patient with my team after we didn't escape the room in time. In addition to giving us like 10 minutes extra, they were nice about one of the guys who kept trying to continue to solve stuff when they were explaining the clues to us, etc. My general feeling is that even though they are relatively new and don't have the super fancy bells and whistles of some of the larger and more established escape room companies, they seem dedicated to trying to make solid puzzles/rooms. I think they'll continue to improve their rooms and the experience overall. read more
