We visited the Homestead location over the weekend; there were 8 of us total and all first timers. I booked Carnegie's Millions, which has a difficulty level of hard. I had booked this room because you can have up to 10 people, and I wasn't sure how many were coming initially. In hindsight, it was obvious I should have booked a room that could hold 8 people that had a lower difficulty level, but too late by that point. In all honesty, we did pretty well - especially for being first timers. Without giving anything away, we got to the very last puzzle, just had a few things in the wrong but were "so close!". Pros: Overall, a fun time! I think everyone agreed that it was fun and would go again. The staff were friendly and pretty helpful. The waiting area (beforehand) had some small puzzles and games to keep you occupied. Cons: I understand that this is a business and is about making money, but I wish they had options that you could book a room privately. For example, maybe on off times like week nights, they could have a limit of 4 people, that way you don't have to worry about being stuck with people you don't know. If my husband and I wanted to go again, or maybe with just one other couple, there is the (high) probability that you would end up being with other people. read more

They cancelled our reservation and closed the business when there was a short, heavy rainfall. The rainfall had been well predicted by the news/weather apps and ended two hours before our reservation. We had made this reservation to celebrate a birthday that a portion of our party flew into Pittsburgh for and another portion drove over 5 hours to attend. We were so incredibly disappointed in the unprofessional way this business closed so quickly leaving us without plans in the city we were visiting. I absolutely am in support of any business closing to keep employees/patrons safe but this wasn't the case. This felt much more like an employee who didn't want to work the rest of their shift that night. Very disappointed and will not make a reservation here again. read more

I write this review as a corpse in an unmarked tomb in the Valley of Kings. Our bumbling foursome did our best to solve the puzzles, but despite multiple hints over the Escape Room loudspeaker (our escape room host really did all he could), we couldn't be saved by our own poor observational skills. This was my second visit to an escape room, and I can point to two specific things I really liked about Escape Room Pittsburgh. First, they really went all-out on the decorations and multimedia. Nothing flimsy or half-assed, they clearly want to create a good experience. Second, I love the old Homestead bank building (one of two locations for them). Escape rooms really aren't about the challenge of solving puzzles. They're more for the social experience, the schmaltz, and the laughs, and we got plenty of all of it. The puzzles in our escape room were a bit of a mixed bag. On a couple of occasions, we had a rough time even figuring out what the puzzle even was (amid all the decorations). But when push comes to shove, what really matters is that everyone is having a good time, and on that score, we brought my dad here on the occasion of his 80th birthday, and he seemed to really enjoy it. Best of all, he did great in there. If I ever see my 80th, I'll be happy if I can be trusted to make my own trips to the loo. read more

Best escape rooms in Pittsburgh? Well heck, they just may well be! This place is up with the best of anywhere my wife and I have been. If you're a fan of tactile experiences that don't rely on locks or codes, then this place is perfect for you. Every puzzle helps you feel more and more immersed in the environment. We did all three rooms at the Homestead location in one night, starting with Tomb Explorer. An excellent room in its own right, you can tell by comparison that it was the prototype for the approach this company would take. The puzzles are all good but some are a bit less thematically specific than others. That said, the Indiana Jones vibe was real, and the plot twist was so much fun. (Oh, as proof that the game masters really do care and pay attention, my wife and I apparently used a novel approach to a puzzle that they'd never seen before and, wouldn't you know it, we heard the staff applauding over the walkie talkie, which was really entertaining.) The last one we did, and my second favourite, was Subway Escape. You really do feel like you've been transported onto the T back in 1980. A technical issue meant we didn't get music, but that would have just enhanced the environment further. I'll be honest that I don't think I've ever seen a more creative room transition; it's enough to make you feel like you were really on a moving subway train. Finally, the piece de resistance, Carnegie's Millions could be one of my favourite rooms of all time. As a Western Pennsylvania native, the references to Carnegie and Frick had me beside myself, laughing as I explained the details to my wife. Beyond that, the room design is absolutely impeccable, with some of the finest uses of space and original fixtures ever. The moment I walked into the second room, all that I could utter was an excited "Whoa," piquing my wife's curiosity and, suffice it to say, she was not let down. I absolutely loved this room and wish I could play it over and over. I can't recommend this venue enough and whatever room you choose, you'll love it. read more

I had the opportunity to try an escape room for the first time at the 7th and Amity location, and had a blast. We were there on Saturday, December 21 and had a group of six adventurers. We were well taken care of by our host, Nicolas, who walked the first-timers through the way the puzzles work. It was also nice that he was just a radio away in case of emergency. The room was very challenging, especially for me, but we were able to find our way out with 49 seconds to spare. Nicolas gave us some fun props and we got a nice group photo to remember the adventure. I definitely recommend this experience, especially at this location. read more

FUN! Maybe it was more fun bc my friends and I actually escaped the lab, but it was such a unique and cool experience that we want to try the prison room and hopefully other ones in the future. I think they mentioned they will have another location in the future. It was all our first time, a group of 7. We were all a bit anxious, excited, and sorta lost in the beginning. The wheels started spinning and next thing you know, we were all over the room and working together. Great for team building. The workers were super nice and really made the experience fun. They walk you thru the history of escape room pgh, the rules, and the objective. They also take a pic of the group after. Four of us reserved and bought tickets in advance, but one of my friends joined last minute and was able to just buy a ticket at the front desk. After signing a waiver form and a quick overview of the rules by a really nice employee, we were sent to the Prisoner Escape room. The puzzles were the perfect amount of difficulty and having the group really helped because we all contributed to solving the puzzles. My only complaint is the last puzzle. I won't give it away, but it was a bit clunky. We got stuck at the last puzzle, and found out afterwards that we had the right concept, we just misunderstood one thing. My recommendation, there is no reason to say that there is nothing to do in the Burgh when we have awesome attractions like this! Dear Diary, Five days in and I am still stuck in Dr. Stein's stupid lab. We're down to our last granola bar...to be split among the eight of us. Fantastic. Just bloody fantastic. This lab is starting to get to everyone. It's driving us mad because anything could be a clue. ANYTHING! Random furniture and scientific artifacts are strewn about. There's a periodic table, some dials, a maze thing, picture frames, posters, lab materials, books, etc. On top of that, it's a bit chilly and gloomy in here. I know it's Pittsburgh, but I feel like I haven't seen the sun in the longest time. There have been about 5 main puzzles we had to solve sequentially in order to obtain a final code to unlock the main door. We're halfway there and working on the rest. Some are pretty intricate, and others not so much. Dr. Stein really is crazy. No wonder he had no friends. Fortunately, I do, and so far we have needed everyone's efforts. I do feel we are getting close, but resources are running out and distracting us. People are starting to get a bit short with each other. Never thought words could hurt so much. Also, there have definitely been a few scuffles. Apparently there is a 30% success rate. When we signed the waiver, we were so confident that we didn't even think to ask what happened to the 70% who did not escape. I pray we never find out. This was a lot of fun!! It's in the bottom of an old bank. The staff was really friendly and exuberant. We had a group of 11 (max is 12). We actually had 15 at first so we booked two rooms and then some people backed out. Normally you'd have to still pay because they stay booked, but the staff let us cancel and get our money back which was very nice of them. Anyhow we had 60 minutes and solved our puzzle with a minute fifteen seconds to spare!! They have 3 rooms (I think one is at their other location but I'm not sure) and we did Carnegie Millions which we were told was the hardest. Definitely was a challenge and had to have some hints along the way. I highly recommend this location! read more

My husband and I enjoyed a weekend in Pittsburgh while in town for a retreat. We decided to do a couple of escape rooms while visiting and are SO happy that we had the chance to visit Escape Room Pittsburgh. We've completed around 15 or so escape rooms in different cities and these 2 stand at the top of our list. Easily the most immersive, technologically advanced rooms we've ever done. We chose to do the Subway room and Carnegie's Millions. Both were fantastic. Subway was slightly less difficult than Carnegie's, but had some incredible technology we had never experienced before. Carnegie's was beautifully decorated and also had some neat technological aspects. We found this one more challenging for sure, but managed to escape with our group. All in all, fantastic rooms for new or seasoned escape room goers. Beautifully designed and definitely love up to their "generation 3" reputation!! read more

The staff was very friendly and clear with instructions. We did the mad scientist's lab, I'd say they did a pretty good job with the theme. This is a fun way to engage your brain and spend an hour with some friends. There are two rooms -- Prison Escape (max of 6 people) and Mad Scientist (max of 8 people). We had 6 people so booked the Prison Escape room. I'm glad we didn't do the one with 8 people, because 6 felt like a bit too many as it is (sometimes too many cooks in the kitchen are a detriment instead of a help). Note that if your group doesn't book the entire room (i.e., a group of 6 friends taking all 6 slots), you may have strangers fill the remaining slots. Also, if you're thinking you want to do this, especially on a weekend, book in advance...wayyyy in advance. I think to get a Sunday afternoon slot, we made our reservation online nearly 2 months ahead of time. This place fills up quickly! Each spot is $27 per person, which does seem a bit pricey given that you only get an hour in the room. As for the game itself, it's definitely challenging. Lots of info to uncover and puzzles to piece together (plus extraneous clues that make you wonder if they're important when they are not). I didn't realize how challenging it would be. With all of the PhD's and Master's degrees that we collectively possess, our group walked in confidently thinking this would be no sweat. Nope! We didn't escape. Apparently there is only a 30% success rate, and sadly we were not among the elite. It was fun to try though, if not a bit humbling to the ego ;) The staff running the game watches as you play and will slip clues under the door if you get stuck for too long (again, humbling to the ego, but it was nice to be able to move through the game). The staff was nice and explained how to escape at the end of the game (we were soooo close). They take your group's picture at the end for their facebook page. Overall, while it was a bit pricey, it was a fun way to spend an afternoon with some friends. Plus, if you don't escape, there's a bar right across the street where you can go nurse your bruised ego afterward! :) read more
