Friends and I had a blast doing The Apartment escape room! Joe was an amazing game master who was very encouraging before the game started and helped us when we got stuck. I enjoyed the various components of the game and there were definitely a few that stumped me for a bit but that we eventually figured out. The Apartment has a capacity for 8 people, but I think our group of 4 was a great size because there's only so many puzzles to do at one time and I felt that we had enough space for us without overcrowding each other. We were late getting there and they were very nice about it- there were no other players so it didn't hold anyone up. The actual place is a bit hard to find on the street- don't expect to see a sign. The instructions we were given were quick, and we were kind of lost and confused since we had never done this before. The facility is like a repainted old third floor office building. The Apartment room is dingy and reminds me of a crappy college apartment in Allston that kids just moved out of but left some furniture behind. The bathroom even had hair by the toilet (gag). For $37 per person, I would expect it to be a bit cleaner? Maybe keep the place up better? Have some cool decor, or cooler features? The place is falling apart. There must have been a shift change because we got clues that were helpful earlier, but we were left completely hanging the last 15 minutes when it was the hardest. The game lady completely fell asleep. When time was up, a different lady came in to tell us we lost. She was nice but we felt we had to ask a bunch of questions to understand what we missed. Both game ladies had very low energy. The sequencing of the game feels off and disjointed. We left feeling pretty disappointed in the whole experience. read more

If I could give this a lower rating, I would. Mostly due to the GM. The absolute worst GM I have ever experienced in well over a hundred escape rooms. I had heard that the company had gone downhill, but this is far worse than I could have ever imagined. The GM was a cross between arrogant and indifferent. I could blame some of it on just poor staffing levels as he seemed to be doing both GM for this and another room (which we could hear when they finished) plus covering the front desk, but it was definitely more than that. It was general lack of caring or customer service. We spent 15-20 minutes literally yelling to get their attention only to with only a few minutes left to get responses that showed they definitely were not paying attention. When the GM came in after we failed the game on the last puzzle (a math puzzle that wasn't clicking after 20 minutes of trying and with nothing to write down on). We complained and their response was "I did tell you that hints were at my discretion." I have had frustration in escape rooms before, but this was aggravation of being ignored and them frankly not caring or even implying it was on purpose when he genuinely was not likely paying attention and perhaps was annoyed by us trying to get their attention. We asked them to explain the last puzzle and then pointed to the clue of a clock and asked us what time it read, we told them and they insulted us stating we obviously don't know how to read an analog clock (which we had not only done through the entire game multiple times), but after they insisted it read a different time, they did the math wrong and eventually admitted we stated the correct time. It took them several minutes of explaining and changing the explanation before it semi-made sense but it was convoluted. The game itself was alright but had many quirks. Like pulling down things higher than in most escape rooms and felt like you're breaking something for an early puzzle. But more annoying is there is a fast-cycling screen at the beginning of the first room in a dark area that felt almost seizure inducing. It gave me a headache and made me stick to my stomach to even look near, and it served no purpose for it to do that or be that bright. When doing puzzles near it, it made it harder to see things, and did most things squinting or with my eyes closed when near it. There is also a object painted red in the second room right next to a lock labeled as not part of the game, so it took some time to realize that the red didn't mean it was in play. There was also a hard to notice door which we were delayed noticing it opened. Some other parts of the room were a little warn and it seems some parts of the puzzles were removed. There is a shelf for 8 objects of which we only found three, and they lead to conflicting answers (one combination says it is something while another said it wasn't which isn't very helpful as far as clues go), so you just need to guess or hope, but more likely just feel like you are missing something that isn't there. There are multiple things that won't stay in place like the final puzzle in the first room needs to be held until it triggers. Over all the puzzles were decent but some were a mixed bag and very vague. Though how we were treated by the GM means I will not be back to Escape the Room in Boston until it is under new ownership. A good GM can make or break a game and this one took a borderline decent game and turned it to not just a frustrating experience but an aggravating one that made me leave angry. There are far better companies in Boston to spend your money on. I would sooner light mine or fire than to return to another game here, which is sad as I have enjoyed several of their past rooms. It was however that bad of an experience. We had done two other rooms prior to this on in the same day and didn't experience any of these issues down the street at a competitor. read more

Frustrating and questionable from the word hello. Upstairs of vacant building with barred gate entrance should have been my sign. Insulting statements about previous customers. There's only two rooms. The South Park theme was probably 5+ years ago when the place was five stars. The staff screw around with you in the set up. There's no professional video storyline. It's memorized script. The hints are not appropriate to where you are in the room. The walls are paper thin and it sounds like the staff is watching a comedy movie while pretending to be the escape room staff. The bathroom looks like someone tried to escape through the floor. We went to Red Fox Escapes the day before- it was less expensive and worlds better than this "adventure". It's the escape room business you'll want to escape! read more

My 4 friends and I were able the make a reservation the day before (though it was St. Patrick's day so maybe they had more availability than they usually would). The clue master was very friendly and gave clear instructions. We chose an escaping the apartment theme. Clues were given whenever the clue master felt like we were struggling. I don't know how their timer works but we were definitely not in there for 60 minutes despite the timer starting its countdown at 60 minutes. We actually have a receipt from the parking garage saying we entered the garage at 6:19 PM - then parked our car and walked two blocks to the escape room, checked in, signed the waivers and had the rules explained to us - yet somehow we were in the room for over 60 minutes by 7:20 p.m.? I read a review on another site (see photo) that indicates you're actually only in the room for 40 minutes. Literally every other escape room I've ever played gives you 60 minutes in the room. Game master seemed totally checked out while we played and the room itself (Apartment) needs to be cleaned. Dirt and dust everywhere (which is very typical of a Boston apartment but my hands were visibly dirty when we left). read more

After checking in we were advised we would be the only ones doing the room. So we anticipated quite the challenge with just 2 people. Our cluemaster gave us helpful clues through. We didn't make it but had accomplished a lot and had a blast playing detective. When the cluemaster told us what we were missing not sure we would have ever found those clues but was fun nonetheless! It's taken me awhile to write this review out of sheer bitterness that I so very barely lost and I'm a sore loser. Overall, the Apartment a fun escape room and particularly nice if you want to have the thrill of a time crunch without the threat of violence or any jump scares. Unlike other places, you cannot ask for help at any point, but you do get pointed clues every 10 minutes. If you don't book to fill the room capacity, you can have strangers end up in your party, which I find weird. That said, it would be hard to escape with fewer than capacity given the breadth of clues. The location is easy to find near the AMC in Downtown Crossing and there's a bathroom onsite. You can store your belongings in the room but given you need 8 people, the coat rack can't handle winter attire! That was a minor bummer. Also a bummer that one of the components of a clue was not set up right (thus my bitterness- plus not being able to ask for help at will and turnover of game masters during the game, so it just didn't feel that supportive). It's a good room to do with kids, which is a huge bonus in the Escape Room market! If you're doing it with kids and you burn a few minutes but the clue was set up wrong on their part and they show no mercy AND you're type A with a complex about losing games you might feel less than thrilled with the experience. In my travels this weekend, I did several different escape rooms. Since I'm usually a solo traveler, I really appreciate when businesses have rooms that can be done solo. This probably ranks in my top 5 solo experiences, with a lot of credit given to clue master AJ. I did the apartment today. My first comment is that when I called, my question was "is this physically possible with one body" and was not dissuaded by a series of "yeah but..." Too many places want to spare feelings or sugar coat it if it's a challenge. I've lost count but I'm nearing 70-75 rooms; I want a challenge. The room is well done. Nothing super fancy, just a TON of puzzles and locks. Everything matters with no real red herrings (something you'll see in other reviews that I REALLY dislike). It was DEFINITELY a challenge but AJ was excellent at knowing when to hint me because I was solo and missing something and when they just needed to let my brain work for a minute. Their mindfulness really made the experience for me. They never over hinted but they never let tailspin and get frustrated. Having done their other rooms at other locations (ETR is a chain) I feel confident in saying that this is the only solo-able room; the dig was a long time ago but I remember one puzzle requiring more than 2 hands and the clock tower is just VAST. All in all, a 4 star room with a 10 star experience, again, thanks to AJ! read more

Absolutely horrifying customer service. We booked a reservation of 7 people and paid online. Once we arrived, we were told that we couldn't use our reservation because we had an 8 year old in our group. After trying to have a conversation with the representative, we were told that even though the site let us book, it was still our fault and we should have read the FAQ. So we tried to pull up the FAQ. Believe it or not, the FAQ on the site didn't work. They blamed it on our browser. We tried on a brand new iPhone and a brand new google phone. We were told that there was absolutely nothing that they could do except give us a credit. We didn't want a credit, we wanted our money back, which apparently needs to go through a huge approval process. We were treated like pieces of shit and basically told that they didn't care about our business at all. I would 100% never recommend this place to anyone. The workers have zero respect for the employees and act like entitled brats. Even after we agreed to a credit, we still have not received the that and really don't expect to at this point. read more

We did The Dig and we thought it was amazing! The technology in the room is pretty impressive, and really challenging. It is kind of an Indiana Jones feel to it, and we all kept waiting for the rolling boulder to come rolling out on top of us. (!) We had a good team with us that worked together well and that made it lots of fun. We didn't make it out (needed 1 more minute) but I would have worked on that for another hour without complaint. Fun! We had a group of 6 + 1 random person doing the Dig. The story line wasn't quite clear to me, but we still made it out with just over a minute to spare. I know some people here have complained about having random people in their escapes, but our random person really worked with us to solve the clues. The clues were challenging enough and we all enjoyed ourselves. They ask for your email address at the end because they are going to send you a picture. Instead, I got an email that said to check Facebook for pictures, and I am now on their mailing list. This part isn't cool. All in all, it's a fun place. read more

What a great experience! Lets start at the beginning. When you are looking for the location, there are no signs outside. You will need to buzz the 3rd floor and they will let you up - but be fast! The inside door locks fast...and it's not your first room, so you look like a fool trying to get through the first set of doors! Pretty funny though! We did Clock Tower with a group of 9 (two groups of 3 and 6.) Our host did a quick briefing, telling us the story line and how the an escape room works. We went into the room and got to work! The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of they decide when to give you the clue - so if you are struggling there's really nothing you an do about it. Another escape room I've done in the past, you yell "clue" and they put something up on the board for you - you can only ask for 3 though - or they start taking time away. We made it out with 4 minutes to spare - but it was super anti-climatic. We felt that some clues weren't used and we were super confused when the door opened. But we got out and I guess that's really all that matters! We will definitely be going back to try the other rooms! read more

Bad experience. We're newbies, and the instructions were minimal. The cluemaster told us beforehand that he'd be listening, and if we were stymied and needed clues, he would provide them. But there would be no clues in the first 10 minutes. Fair enough. After 10 minutes we asked for a clue. No response. We asked two or three times, clock ticking away, before he responded. The lack of responsiveness continued. With 35 minutes of our hour to go, we were stymied again. We requested a clue. No response. We asked repeatedly for 15 minutes with no response. Finally, we opened the door only to see our cluemaster jabbering on his cellphone. What a waste of $40 per person! read more

This place is great! A truly fun and challenging affair for people of all ages and skill levels! I came here alone last Friday to celebrate my birthday and the staff were all completely professional and polite. I never felt judged by any of them for doing this typically group activity by myself and none of the staff let on for even a minute that they might be skeptical about my claims that none of my friends were there because they all had something come up at the last minute (even though I was really lying about this since I actually don't have any friends). The escape puzzle was one of the most challenging I've ever encountered! I actually still haven't figured out how to escape yet, so I'll update this review when I finally have, but so far it's been a blast! P.S. In case anyone from work is reading this: yes, this is why I've no call no showed the past two days but don't worry, I should be out of here soon.
