Escarabajo Scratch - Bars Near Me - Guadalajara, JAL

About a 15 minute walk from our hotel, Hotel Fénix, but we were in the mood for having pizza tonight and this place was nearby and had great reviews on Yelp. Well, we were not disappointed. We ordered the Coltrane Pizza, which had oregano, cherry tomatoes, basil and cheese. I have to say that this was probably the BEST pizza I have ever had in my life. The crust was just the way I like it, which was obviously cooked in a real brick oven. Dry and crisp, but not hard. Very flavorful in every way. I paired it with a pint of cold Stout, which made for a perfect evening. The restaurant is situated in an artsy, alley type atmosphere along with several other similar restaurants. It relaxing, service was great, but the pizza was AWESOME. Our daughter had a burger, which she couldn't finish, so I got the honor of helping her out. The burger was amazing as well. The last time we were in Guadalajara we ended up here on our first night, in the pouring rain, in search of something cool, local, and slinging food and drinks. We liked it so much that it topped our list as a place to return to on our return visit last week. Once again, it did not disappoint. Live music is a thing here, and not the mariachi that you'll find everywhere else. At Escarabajo Scratch you'll find local jazz, rock, blues, you name it. When discussing where we'd be going for the evening a quick look at their Facebook page told us that there would be music, sealing our fate. "Mexican time" is a real thing and I know this, my wife is born and raised in Tijuana. The 10:00pm start time for the band was unceremoniously pushed to 11:30pm and nobody scoffed at it. The drinks were flowing and the service was phenomenal so we weren't headed anywhere else. Here's our 4+ hours of hanging at Escarabajo Scratch in a nutshell. - Three pizzas (big enough to serve two people) - Three hamburgers - An order of the "paparikas" - Two BOTTLES of Tequila - Two bottles of wine - 10 vodka drinks - No less than 10 bottles of mineral water (used for mixers) - No less than 10 cans of Squirt (used for mixers) - 10 beers - 2 shots of Tequila (before ordering bottles) $2,728.00 pesos = $151.00 US Yep, seven friends, too much food, too much booze, too much fun for under $30.00 US per person including tip. First off, our server was absolutely incredible. And when I say incredible, I mean like she was unreal good at her job. She was EVERYWHERE and always knew what everyone wanted and needed. Even when it got super packed and there was a band and she had to squeeze in between everyone to get to the tables in the back. I mean, she'd show up with 6 drinks, nothing spilled and all the beers in her pockets and apron. A true pro! We got a bunch of food for the table and a few pizzas which we loved! The salami seemed to be the table favorite. Also, the paprika Fries were really yummy. That night there was an amazing band that played old school rock songs. It created a really cool vibe and definitely made our experience here better. You can order drinks by the bottle (even liquor) which was way better for us since there were so many of us. We stopped in for a beer and found they had a wonderful selection of artesanal beers. We the tried the panela de horno...was excellent. After a bit of food my husband moved on the the Mezcal menu...he enjoyed both of his choices. We finished with a Torta de cachete, very flavorful with a tomatillo salsa and another beer. This relaxed bar/gastropub (I think that's what you can consider it) was one of my favorite aspects of being in Guadalajara (other than the historic appeal of the city and a few other goodies gems in the city). Things I got/to get: Minerva Vienna (Minerva is the local craft brewery) Papas Escarabajo (super saucy but so good) The food and drinks are great and prices are hard to beat. There were also a ton of other items that sounded great on the menu, but we weren't hungry enough to order anything else. My only regret is not coming back here more times. Love this bar in the heart of centro historico. This place has cold beer good music and a bohemian feel. Fun for people who just want to relax and enjoy downtown Guadalajara. Close to the cathedral and other attractions. A most for travelers to the city. Night time is perfect to visit and begin pub crawl. read more
