Got a cremadet from here it was sitting in the window and caught my attention. It had a very flaky and crisp outside with bits of caramaized sugar outside. Inside there was some cream filling. It was very good, buttery and flaky but I wished there was more cream inside. The plaque on the doorstep means it's been in business since 1902! Think about that!! read more

Great pastry shop on the busiest street, los Ramblas . Very nice staff that spoke many languages . They had a case full of beautiful pastry , all instagram worthy . I had a small spinach quiche and a latte and it was a nice break . The walls are covered with pictures of famous cakes and family getting awards . It was interesting to see. Imagine INK spilling from one of those old ink bottles. That's what their hot chocolate looked like: Ink! The establishment is small but well distributed. The hot chocolate I had here is not the same kind of hot chocolate you get when you ask for Churros con chocolate no. This is a thick yet very smooth strong flavored chocolate. Like one of those made with hard chocolate instead of powdered chocolate. It's served in a espresso cup, wonder why? It is all you need. Escribá also offers an assortment of desserts. From those I had their popular Labio (Lips). A set of perfectly lined beautiful red lips but edible of course. It had passionfruit. That tartness enchants me everytime. And don't be scared of the prices. I thought they would be higher. Great service as well. read more

Originally opened in 1906 and still a family-run enterprise, current owner Antoni Escriba and his team subscribing to the same philosophy as those before them with a focus on classic tastes with elegant designs to commemorate all occasions, it is even before guests poke their head through the doors of Escriba that most will realize this is not the average pastry shop, a current lineup of women's high heels made entirely of Chocolate decorating the windows alongside Wedding Cakes and flowers in step with the season. Offering everything from Cookies and Croissants to Wedding Cakes and elegant individual Pastries, a variety of items available for sample including two styles of tiny Biscuits that were fairly mundane near the register, it was passing over many tempting choices that the decision was made to split three small Desserts and two Viennoiserie, the Caramelized Apple Empanada unexpectedly warm considering the time of day and quite flaky with a good crunch, though overall it would have benefitted from a bit more Fruit inside. Moving next to a Raspberry Croissant, the lamination still very obvious though the texture of the bottom had unfortunately been compromised by sweet red gel with a texture more like Pate de Fruit than actual Jam, it was after a young woman presented to add warm Sauce to both the Tire and the Sheep that the rest of the goods were tasted, a branded half-Coconut filled with Dark Chocolate, Coconut Cream and Mango Jam resembling an Egg's Yolk clever and light while the Paris Brest's Choux was crisp around Hazelnut Cream, though the highlight of the visit was undoubtedly "Ovellla" with its layers of Nougat, White Chocolate, Yellow Cake and caramelized Pecan Frosting. read more

The hot chocolate was delicious, but that's about all I enjoyed here. I know this pastry shop is esteemed with a rich history, but I think that contributed to the lack of service here. We waited 10 minutes for a server to come by, just to give us the menu. Then we had to wait another 10 minutes for him to come back so we could put in our order. The server had no smile, no polite demeanor, it was just an in-and-out situation. Unfortunately, the interaction was enough of a turn off for me to not recommend this place. read more

Currently sitting on the patio area of one of the most charming bakery/cafés in Passeig. I ordered an Angie for €6 and a cafe latte for 2€ -- a total indulgence -- while I watch the lively block in front of me. It's off a street with tons of cafés and shops so makes for great people watching. There's an opening in part of Escribe where I watch a guy making crema catalana (creme brule), and the smell is absolutely addicting. Great place to take a snack break. They also have free wifi which I'm using to write this review. -1 star for slow service and because they forgot to give me the dessert for about 30 min. I'm not in a rush, but I can see how this may be off putting for others. Still, very lovely place for desserts and espresso. read more

This place was very consistent for me when I went there. Service was always topnotch and always with a smile. Food was tasty and full of flavor. Price was extremely reasonable. Café did not disappoint either. Secure Wi-Fi and it worked. Although this is in the busy section of the Rambla it is worth it. I went there in the afternoons and evenings. They have been around since 1906 so they must be doing something right to last that long in business. read more

I didn't know about the great reviews or the long standing history of Escriba when I went here. All I knew is that I was hungry and needed a little something to keep me going until lunch. I'm really glad I found this place. It's a small place, so if you want to sit and eat, you might have to wait to get seated. This place is a pastry/dessert heaven and deciding what to get was really difficult (especially when you're hungry and want to devour everything). I decided to go with the chocolate croissant with a cafe con leche. The croissant was delicious and really hit the spot! My friends order several other items. The only reason for the -1 star was because they initially got our order wrong but fixed it promptly. Definitely coming back here when I am in Barcelona. read more

This is a very old and well known pastry shop. It's right on Las Ramblas, but the inside does not feel too big or touristy. I had the signature dessert, which is the Red Lips! I always wear red lipstick, so this was very fitting. I was served in the small, but quaint dining area and the staff made sure I was attended to. The dessert was very creamy and inside held a surprise of cake and a passion fruit filling. I didn't know what to expect, but was very pleased! Fabulous place for all things bakery. Tasty Coffee; Amazing waffles with crema; Light as air but incredibly Delicious individual cakes. I had the cake with chocolate and orange. Escribà is a little bit of Paris with Spanish flair. The front of the "cafe" is artfully crafted but the dining area feels like an afterthought (minimal decor). I ordered a simple croissant - it was beautifully rolled, small and light. Slight docking for it being a tad over baked. We also picked up a little donut thing (name escapes me) -- fried dough with sprinkling of sugar. I liked how it didn't taste like they used shortening which leaves a weird aftertaste. ... lastly on the order was the coffee con leche.... con leches come small but powerful in European countries. We were joking how whenever we travel abroad, we're constantly reminded how "super sized" Americans eat / drink. .... ordering: You order up front at a tinnnny cashier, then go to the back to wait for your items (even if it's just baked goods). All in all .. a nice relaxing experience. It's also a nice reprieve from the busy Mercat St. Joseph (one of the larger outdoor markets in Barcelona). btw --- They have lots of beautiful cakes, pastries, chocolates.. of course. :) After relaxing here, I couldn't wait to go back to Paris again for pastries!! Escriba feels like a little bit of Paris plunked down on La Rambla. After grabbing tapas at La Boqueria, I highly recommend stopping by Escriba for a pastry to go ("para llevar"). The desserts are all gorgeous, so I wondered whether the insides could ever match up to the beauty of the presentation. Rest assured that the Alice, a delicious combination of chocolate ganache, sponge cake, cream, and raspberry preserves, lived up to the hype. The coffee was good too. A little on the pricey side, but well worth a visit when you're looking for a sweet pick-me-up or finish to your meal. Do not, I repeat do NOT get the hot chocolate here. Maybe I didn't order the right thing but when I got the hot chocolate, it was literally melted dark chocolate in a cup. I wasn't able to drink or even sip it since it was just pure chocolate. Maybe someone should let me know if this is a Barcelona-y thing that I just didn't pick up. Anyways, ordered their two most famous pastry, it was good but nothing to rave about and I wouldn't come back again. Bf's expresso was good but the service was below average. I never have this kind of bad experience in a cafe on crowded main road. I have no idea whether those waitresses have wrong attitude towards coloured people or people who do not speak the same language as them, they treated us so differently from others. To be honest, food was good, but service was terrible. We sat there for almost half an hour with nobody come to serve menu. We felt not good and tried to talk the girl on the bar. Unbelievable, she pretended that she did not find us standing in front of her, when I talked to her, she just walked away. Moreover, when we said we want to repeat for a waffle, she firstly said which favour we wan, but after fifteen minutes we were served nothing. I went to talk to her again, but she said we did not order and it is not her business. So bad experience for a tourist place. Dessert. I'm a sucker for dessert. Then a few weeks before our trip to Barcelona, I saw Escriba on Masterchef. That pretty much did me in, and I knew I'd have to head here to give some of the delicious desserts a try. So after lunch nearby, we headed here. Unfortunately it is on La Rambla, but we gave it a go anyway. We're totally glad we did. I ordered a chocolate dessert with hazelnut praline, an espresso and a small hot chocolate with violet. The other half ordered the lemon dessert with a large hot chocolate with cayenne pepper. The desserts were absolutely delicious with an amazingly thick and rich hot chocolate on the side. It's some seriously good hot chocolate. (Be aware that it's more of a Spanish or Italian-style hot chocolate that consists of really rich melted chocolate and not a sub-par American-style hot chocolate than has a lot of water in it. This one is far superior so ignore what anyone else may say about the hot chocolate. Eat it with a spoon already!) The cayenne was quite hot and the other half needed some help because of the size and the heat of the pepper. Throw in some reasonably good service and free wifi, and you've got a place to kill an hour or so in the afternoon. That's what we did while we were waiting for our friend to finish a class and meet up with us. Next time I may check out the other branch as I think it may be a bit bigger. But if you're a tourist and can't leave La Rambla, at least there's one amazing place there. read more

The aroma of this cafe....amazing!! I can't recall walking past a shop and the smell alone makes me want to go in! The shop is small but tasteful. The purpose of my visit was to buy a present for friends at home...the lady behind the counter offers us a free Macroon and we gladly accepted. It was devine....way nicer than i thought it would be!! Go go go. Wonderful cakes. Delicious and different. The building is a delight and the market behind it is incredible. The service is good, just be prepared to speak spanish. It's not cheap, but these cakes are little pieces of art, so have some respect. I got a green cake that was gorgeous and kinda crazy looking in a good way. It had toffee. I got it for my husband's birthday along with the little lips, before we cut the larger cake. It had the wow factor I had hoped for.
