I have been involved with Eskaton Grass Valley for many years. First as a homeowner and now years later as a resident in the Lodge. I find that both the management and employees are very attentive to the residents needs. The management is superb with many years in care for seniors. They have "a get it done" attitude and are easy to work with when an issue arises. They have a positive relationship with the residents and offer many diverse activities. I note that all the other reviews are by people who are very happy they helped a parent or close elderly person find and move into an apartment in The Lodge at Eskaton Grass Valley. Here's a review by a resident of more than two years. My wife and I (both 88 years old) moved in about mid April, 2017 and we have enjoyed our life here ever since. The attitude of the entire staff is do do whatever they can to make life pleasant, from a friendly greeting as we pass in the halls (every person, every time) to being there to keep our apartments ship shape, to maintaining a vast number of activities, special occasions and outings, to having three high quality meals every day at very flexible times. Last Sunday my trout dinner was so well prepared and tasty that I could have been in a fine restaurant in Grass Valley or Nevada City, both known tourist destinations with top quality restaurants. In fact, my challenge is to ration myself to keep my weight under control. In the back of my mind I compare each meal with what I would have in my favorite restaurants and more often than not the comparison is favorable. Not long ago a comfortable Eskaton bus took a group of us to view the tulips at Ananda Village. We all had a wonderful time and returned smiling from ear to ear. Last spring I broke my leg in a freak accident and the van drivers at Eskaton drove me to and from all my visits to the orthopedic surgeon. There was also a wheelchair available for the early portion of my recovery. My point is that whatever my need, from having fun to emergencies, Eskaton is there. The swimming pool is great. Movies and special showings are shown in a private theater every day, I play poker, others play bridge, with wonderful people in nurturing surroundings. read more

It has been several months since we moved our mother out of Eskaton, Grass Valley, So I thought it was time to leave a review. My Mother in law lived there for approx. 3 years in the memory care and we finally got the opportunity to move her closer to us in Oregon. All during covid we saw her only a few times and due to her condition this was very hard for her. Oregon has less restrictions on Memory care patients so we were eager to move her here. We realized it would take careful planning but with the help of several family members we thought we could do it. This along with the fact that the co health care worker told us they thought she would do just fine with the trip and adjust to life here very well considering her whole family is here. When moving day came we had all our "ducks in a row". Then came the staff at Eskaton. They were beyond rude to us, even throwing up roadblocks to make it more difficult than it already was. We had made numerous phone calls ahead of the move to avoid this very thing. They did not refill her medication, (and tried to make us feel bad for not having it even though we requested the refills at least 3 times prior)they would not give us her laundry and above all the tried to block us from entering at all siting covid. we left there late for an over 6 hour drive but it went fine after all the bad treatment we received at Eskaton. She has adjusted well and is doing great here with family but we are very sad and upset at the way they treated us that day. Eskaton is very expensive as were paying close to 10K a month. With regular price hikes at least once a year. The treatment we received was unessesary and we will not forget what they did that day. Take your loved ones somewhere else. read more

My parents moved to Eskaton Grass Valley in March 2018. They had been in Assisted Living in San Diego but needed more help and we wanted them closer to where we live. What a difference moving from a for-profit facility to the not-for-profit Eskaton Grass Valley. Eskaton has less employee turnover and a much better staff environment that improves care for their residents. They are truly full service with an in-house beauty salon and coordinated care with Claydon Geriatrics Medical Staff and other external providers. The staff honestly cares for their residents rather than just seeing them as a paycheck. Additionally, as my parents' incapacitation increased, their care level kept up culminating with a move to Memory Care in March 2021 and subsequent hospice in their apartment this year. They were able to stay together and keep their cat with them the entire time. My dad recently passed away peacefully. The Eskaton staff was so very helpful and supportive. He was cared for in his apartment with his family without being alone at an unfamiliar nursing home or hospital room. Eskaton's staff support throughout the entire time was wonderful and they did a great job of keeping our family informed. They worked seamlessly with Hospice of the Foothills and Claydon Geriatrics ensuring my parent's comfort. Eskaton's support for my mom through the change has been excellent, keeping her involved with activities and looking after her continued welfare. We are so thankful for Eskaton's coordinated care over the years. Thank you Eskaton! read more

After looking and visiting several other Care centers. Eskaton was far and away the best. I'm a vegetarian and was concerned that they would not be able to meet my needs. WoW! As soon as I told the staff in the dining room and one of the chefs they made sure that I would be able to continue with my vegetarian and also vegan ways. They graciously reminded me that one of the soups had a broth that wouldn't work for me. The staff is outstanding. They are kind and more than willing to make sure that my meals were up to par. Way above par. Top of the line. My living quarters are excellent and my dog is treated with kindness and understanding. Sally my cat gives Eskaton 5 stars. I've lived in this area for 15 years and my parents lived here since 72. Many senior centers and assisted living facilities provide good services. However, Escaton is a cut above the rest. It feels like home and when you ask residents, they love it. Comradory between them and staff flows well and they feel completely safe. As an in-home care provider I visit residents at Eskaton Village including their homes and know they feel completely comfortable and safe. read more

It's not cheap. But, if I were a 70-80-something independent person looking for a nice place to call home minus the maintenance and upkeep of my own house, this would be the place to hang my hat. My grandmother has been living here for 2 years now and I think she's introduced me to every single employee in the main building at least 10-20 times each and they never seem to get bored or annoyed at "meeting" me. Anyway, I can vouch that this place is quick to cater to the needs and desires of it's residents, keeps all the common areas well-lit, clean and looking new and offers some great entertainment and activities that I am not ashamed to say even I like to take part in! Absolutely the best Senior Community in our beautiful foothills. Money WELL spent. For a year my mom had LIVED AT A DIFFERENT AL in Grass Valley - a national chain. I was horrified to learn the help there had been stealing from my mother who at the time was 79 and was recovering cancer treatments and my father's death. I had reported suspected thefts to the administrator, who responded by blaming my mom and her memory and then other residents -until I caught the help stealing on video tape and could prove this to the administration. I did not want mom in a place where the burden of proof was on a resident!~ absurd! That was actually all a god-send because I immediately moved my mother to Eskaton Grass Valley who arranged for us to move mom in very quickly and over a holiday weekend. As soon as I spoke to Yvonne at Eskaton at the time of our crisis, I knew everything was going to be okay and that my mom deserved better and BETTER was ready to help! That was almost 2 years ago. The first thing I noticed at Eskaton is corporate culture is very different and really focused on aging with dignity and the individual. I am there often and one can observe a great deal over time. The staff -ALL of the STAFF, treat my mom with such hutzpah and dignity and genuinely look out for her best interest. I see it over and over in the small actions of the staff. Actions that often go unrecognized but speak volumes to me about the genuine care these people have for my mom! The health office staff has really helped me stabilize all mom's challenging medical needs and data. They have competent nurses on staff and med-techs which helped me advocate for my mom. They keep me informed and always in the loop. They listen to me, aide me in tough decisions and continue to offer excellent solutions to mom's progressive aging issues. The ratios of Staff to Resident is so much higher at Eskaton also. There is very little turn over in the staff. The caregivers are seasoned, trained, consistent and always go the extra mile. They absolutely put the residents needs first. The way the caregivers assist my mother in very personal tasks demonstrates the ability and love these workers have for their calling. The activities at Eskaton are non-stop, invigorating and intellectually stimulating. The community of people who live there are having fun and mom is very active in ART, Trivia, Jeopardy, word games, Bingo, etc. She is always looked after at activities by the community members as well. They embraced my mom when she first moved there and made her feel welcomed. Fran the art teacher rocks. Wow what a caring teacher that woman is cultivating creativity and a sense of belonging through the artistic processes. This has helped my mom to flourish again. For so many years prior to moving to California mom isolated after my dad's death and due to cancer treatments. She has a whole new community of friends amongst the staff and the residents. She loves it. The grounds are secure, beautiful - the place is clean - the food is good and the holiday dining is wonderful. When my family visits from the East Coast they can actually stay there in a suite for a nominal fee. It is like a country club. Over the past 2 years everyone, from the maintenance people, to the dining room, housekeeping admins, caregivers, med techs, the health care staff and the other residents have become our family. They are on top of it... and all on my team. All these people are helping me in a challenging task of shepherding my mom through these chapters of her life. She loves her community at Eskaton and I could not be more grateful for the entire experience. I am the President and C.E.O. of a 35 year old electronic firm which supplies the healthcare, hospital, assisted living and nursing home industries. For 20 years I have become quite familiar with the business of senior resident facilities. I honestly can say I have seen many, many, many senior communities so I feel discerning in the best care for my mom. Exceptional place for assisted living. Today we checked in my 92 year old mother in law. The staff at Eskaton was wonderful. I had mentioned that my mother in law loves watching the hummingbirds on our balcony at home and if it would be possible for me to put a hummingbird feeder outside her window. They said that wasn't possible because she is on the 3rd floor. When we arrived the staff had installed a Hummingbird feeder outside her window. We were amazed to see it all setup and good to go. After many, many, many years of taking care of my mom I decided to take a tour of Grass Valley Eskaton. I can be extremely critical. I couldn't find one thing wrong with Eskaton after my tour. I was hoping I would find some things wrong because the guilt was consuming me. I felt like I was abandoning my mom. After all of these years taking care of her, how could I possibly "put her in a home" at age 85. I was exhausted and at my wits end. Again, more guilt. Four months went by after my tour. I decided to move my mom into an apartment at Eskaton. She was apprehensive, but was a good sport about it. My mom has never been "a social butterfly" so I was a little worried about her not joining in on any of the activities. Day 2, my mom went to her first activity. An art class. Art class? She could barely write her name legible. 8 months later, she was artist of the month! For the first month, I was at my mom's apartment every day, all day. I found myself sitting in her apartment alone. She was attending one activity after the next. She was having a ball. Frankly, I was shocked at what I was seeing. My mom came alive. It was amazing to watch. I'm still amazed at all the functions she attends. She loves living there. Now, instead of feeling like I have "put her in a home", I feel like she lives on a cruise ship. She smiles every day and is excited about her day and the days ahead. I believe I have literally given my mom a life again. Thank you Eskaton for taking such good care of my mom! read more

Eskaton retirement community in Grass Valley is head and shoulders above the majority of assisted living facilities I have worked with. I am a Senior Move Manager actively engaged in helping seniors move from their home into a one-level and/or more manageable living space. Sometimes this involves moving into a family member's home and sometimes it involves moving into an assisted living or nursing home. It is in this capacity that I am commenting on the Eskaton Villiage retirement community in Grass Valley, CA. The buildings and surrounding landscape are attractive, modern, clean and well maintained. Trash is picked up almost before it hits the ground. The interior decorating is tasteful and comfortable. The food is top quality, presentation is excellent, and special dietary requirements are handled with the utmost dignity. There is a wide variety in programming that runs the gamut from water aerobics to current events discussions for more independent and active residents to art classes and piano recitals for those residents with physical and mental challenges. The program directors are serious about the development and implementation of quality activities. They try to have something suitable for every resident and in fact, if one of the residents does not show up for an activity they normally attend, they will send someone to look for him or her to find out why. However, the most exceptional thing at Eskaton is the quality of the staff, across the board, from custodians to nurses to sales directors. Eskaton employees care deeply about the residents. They are very friendly and always smiling. They are exceedingly well trained and frequently go above and beyond their job descriptions to assist an individual with a particular challenge. The interaction of the staff with the residents is wonderful. The aides in particular are exceptionally compassionate and competent. I have seen many a tense situation de-escalated by an aide's patience and sense of humor. When the time comes for me to leave my home for an assisted living facility I hope to find a place in Eskaton Villiage. And in the event that I become memory impaired and unable to make my own decisions, I've told my children that this is where I hope to live. read more

Our favorite part of Eskaton is the care staff, they're outstanding at what they do! The Wait Staff also is quick and able to provide great service with their all day dining. Faith in the kitchen is always attentive and such a great personality! We've been here for 8 months now and we love it. All the staff is friendly and takes the time to learn each and everyone's names. The move in process was easy and fast thanks to Lynette and the move in team!
