Hands down the most delicious and authentic handmade tortillas in all of San Diego County. They don't use lard and they have resealable packaging to keep them fresh for longer. I won't buy tortillas from anywhere else. Any other tortillas are garbage in my opinion, ruining the meal. The experience coming into this cute little shop is very welcoming and quick, I never have to wait, and there is always parking. This is a very well-oiled machine that has never once disappointed me. As someone who works in the area I always pass by this tortilleria and was looking forward to trying one of their burritos. As soon as I stepped foot in the store a woman steps in front of me and says I can't come in with my scooter. I immediately walked out and took my business to Farmer Boys where they don't mind if you walk in with a scooter. Imagine turning away a potential long time customer because of some weird store policy. Pushing a scooter is the equivalent of pushing a stroller and I guarantee they don't kick out people that may come in with strollers. Super good California burrito but SUPER weird ingredient when I asked. They said there is carne asada, fries, cheese, HAM, and EGGS! Very strange lol I had to ask again eggs and ham? I got it with no eggs but the ham actually was delightful. Great flavor, the cheese was super creamy. Why do people buy tortillas at big box stores? I have asked my wife multiple times about this - Pretty much lost count. In my opinion, people should just use cardboard if they are looking for convenience and savings. My wife never knew that I only bought tortillas from local factories before we got married. I kept telling her that bad tortillas can make a great meal horrible while freshly made ones can make a mediocre meal almost great at a bare minimum good. I finally had enough and bought a few bags from Esperanza's Tortilleria. They did not drop the ball. Legit tortilla factory with an efficient Mexican grocery, carneceria AND taco shop built in. Had one of the best Pollo Asado tortas I've had in some time while waiting for my car at Pep Boys. Super authentic. The roll may have been the best ever. Not sure if it was baked on premise earlier that day, but it sure tasted like it. Chicken was very flavorful- marinated, well seasoned and grilled to order. Never seen taquitos sold individually before. I assume made to order, mix and match. This is my go to spot for tortillas. You can't beat them in terms of flavor or quality. They are made fresh, just a few feet away every day. I like both the flour and corn tortillas. The small restaurant and market are also great. I've ordered burritos several times and they've always been great. The store is small, but has pretty much everything you need on hand. read more

Couldn't find the section to just review their inside taco shop but here goes anyways: Ordered a carne asada and a adobada burrito. Pricing goes a little higher than $8 which is a little oof. But being a frequent tortilla buyer here I decided to give them a shot. The taste was nice but the meat felt pre-prepared. Chewy and a bit gristle-soaked from sitting in the ready bin (I assume). The tortilla tasted nice, and honestly was the star of the show. Unfortunately for Esperanza. . . I don't seek out taco shops for the tortilla. Pass for me. This review is just for the taco shop. Got an Adobada and a Carnitas taco and the meat in both, while lean, was too dry, chewy and underseasoned - especially the Carnitas. The tortillas were good but the little cups of runny salsa were not. My family has been coming to Esperanza's for the tortillas and masa para tamales since the shop opened in 1980. I remember going in as a little girl with my mother and grandmother and now I bring my daughters. It's become an Escondido icon and I'm not surprised it's remained in business this long. Five Stars for the fresh tortillas. Esperanza's makes the **best** flour & corn tortillas. You can see them being made in the factory attached to the little story. The corn tortillas make great chips & tacos. The flour tortillas make great burritos and amazing light, crispy, flaky tostada shells. They also offer whole wheat tortillas. One star for the taqueria. I guess I ordered the wrong thing, reading about others good experience. The cheese enchiladas combo was the most boring, disappointing I've ever had. For tortillas, this place is "as good as it gets." Corn or flour, large, small or somewhere in between, are all terrific. The tortilla factory and its workers can be seen through the door near the register. They also have a small general store, carniceria, and a humble taco shop. I've tried the taco shop once and found it to be ok. Most recently however, I found that they carry something called humped comals one of which I purchased right away. Very cool! What a find. Got some delicious tortillas where the only ingredients were lime, salt, and corn. The man who rung us up (he seemed like an owner or manager) was super friendly and everything you'd want from a general store owner. You know, the type of experience where you're so glad to be buying such great quality items from the little guy instead of Albertson's. This place is just okay. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here, only if it was convenient. Employees don't care about customer retention. They could probably care less if you came back. The store is cluttered and shelves are too tall. THE AISLES ARE NARROW, TOO NARROW FOR SOMEONE WITH A WHEELCHAIR TO GET THROUGH. I only noticed that because my husband is disabled. I came here because I wanted to try something other than Mission tortillas for dinner. I have not tried the tortillas yet, so this is just based off the hot food I ordered and my experience. The food tasted slightly above average, but the cost is a bit high. Serving size is just average, not heaping. The hot food area was not busy and I wondered how long food had been sitting in hot trays. I was concerned over how fresh the food actually was. I mean it wasn't bad, just not great...
