That Mexican Place has become my family's go-to spot for Mexican food in Escondido. The portions are huge, the service is always friendly and attentive, and the food comes out surprisingly fast. It'd been a couple years since the sad limp rolled taco encounter. So given how often these places turn over ownership or management, I figured it time to give That Mexican Place anonymously go. I ordered a #1 combo (shredded beef taco, cheese, enchilada, beans/rice) for myself, and two shredded beef tacos à la carte for Mom, to eat at home a half mile away. Upon opening, the combo looked good, although the tiny smattering of pico on the taco and particularly the super skimpy portions of both beans and rice immediately stood out - a real bummer as I REALLY love Mexican beans and rice. So presentation was quite disappointing. Then, the second I picked up the taco, it was apparent it didn't survive the trip, having completely disintegrated on the bottom. This appeared to be from using a thinner than usual tortilla to make the taco, which was then set directly in a puddle of unusually watery enchilada sauce. So that was strike 2. As for the cheese enchilada, there was so little cheese had I not known what I was eating I wouldn't have been able to tell you. In addition, it was swimming in the same watery enchilada sauce that caused the demise of the taco. As for the à la carte beef tacos, mom reported they were good. So at least she was happy (Whew! Thank goodness!). The good news is, the food all tasted good, with the issues all relating to quantity and plating, not quality or taste. So despite the low rating, I'll be back at least once more to give them another go, if only because it's so conveniently close to home. Fingers crossed... read more

This place is legit. We were visiting Escondido today and decided Mexican food was the move. The name That Mexican Place caught our eye, and I'm glad it did. I ordered the Surf and Turf burrito, and it is hands down the best burrito I've ever had. Huge, flavorful, perfectly balanced -- just incredible. Marlene went with the taco‑and‑enchilada combo, and the portions were no joke. I almost never leave food on my plate, but this place came close to defeating me. I have been coming here for years and often too, but I went back recently and ordered an adobada Burrito. The salsa bar was back which means I could get enough salsa for our food again. They also had an improved roasted red sauce. But when I got home, I found my burrito was tiny. It tasted good but it's like 1/2 the size they used to be, probably even smaller than that. In fact I just finished it and I'm looking for some additional food to eat. I'm not sure if I will try them again, or just start looking for another local place that is decent, there are many in the area, this was just my prefered one in the local area. I know places have raised prices significantly over the last few years, but now the burritos are 1/2 size as well as more expensive. edit: I had to lower my review after getting sick from eating this burrito. I don't think I will go back at this point. My speculation is that they left the meat out or it was not stored at appropriate temperatures, They probably didn't have quite enough to make the full burrito but gave me whatever was left. Too risky to go back again as I have had non fresh meat from them previously, but it wasn't often. I didn't get sick previously though, I could just tell a difference between the meat in my burrito and my wifes carneasada fries and we both agreed that one of them was not freshly cooked like the other. I had a huge carne asada burrito that contained fries. I could only eat 1/2 of it. The other half I brought home. The service was very good. While I wouldn't say this restaurant serves authentic Mexican food, the meal was acceptable. There was plenty of room for indoor dining at tables with benches. read more

I have eaten in and taken out here before, but it's been a while so I had a refresher visit. Food: I had a grilled chicken taco and shrimp taco. They were both good and good size. $12 for both, I wish they had grilled fish. Food was not too salty, which was a plus for me. Tasted fresh. There were different kinds of salsas and sauces available to flavor the food the way you want. Chips and red salsa if you eat in. The wait for the food was reasonable. Ambiance: Super clean everywhere!! The dining room was good size, well-decorated and welcoming with real flowers on each table! The dining room was a bit dark and "cavy", but the bright decor was bringing it up. The tables were separate enough. A large screen TV was silently playing sports. I could feel the pride of ownership in how they kept this place clean. They use real utensils and plates for eating in. No plastic forks and plates here. It definitely made me feel that this place was more than a takeout joint. Service: The young lady at the counter was nice and friendly. A couple of ladies came around in the dining room, and asked if everything was fine. Very nice touch! This is like a real restaurant for a takeout price! This is a great neighborhood place. Stayed overnight at Harrah's in Funner, CA and was heading home. On our way home we wanted some authentic Mexican food and decided to try "That Mexican Place" and we were not disappointed. Upon walking into the store, we could smell how fresh it was and the food was just as delicious as it smelled. We ordered the: -Sausage, Egg and Cheese breakfast burrito ($8.65) - really good! Lots of cheese, sausage and egg in good proportions. -Carnitas Burrito ($10.75) - wish there'd been some beans or rice in it, it was literally a ton of carnitas with pico and guac but nevertheless, it tasted delicious! -Two Chicken Enchiladas ($12.45) - not bad, chicken was a little dry but the beans and rice sides were great. Came in to try El Bombero but without the carne asada. Also added guacamole. Basically, it's like a California burrito but with shrimp. It was overall pretty good. The only reason why it lost a star was because the fries felt a little stale. I'm not sure if that was due to the 10-minute ride home or if it was because it was stale. The red hot sauce was decent. I haven't had the best luck with burritos in SM, so I was open to trying something else after grabbing coffee nearby. I got the El Bombero burrito, my boyfriend got the surf & turf. They were both phenomenal - tortilla was stretchy but not too doughy or dry (perfect!!), the portion was HUGE, the carne asada was moist and the shrimp was good. We got to go, but decided to eat inside, super cute and plenty of seating. I liked his better, only because the seasoning on their beans is phenomenal, but if you're in the mood for a CA style burrito, obvs you go for the bombero. My family and I ate here last night and I was in absolute shock. I want to preface this by saying I'm NEVER the person who goes out to eat then has a fit over prices. Everything has gone up. That's the reality. But for a taco shop, this was insane. We ordered 6 street tacos, a bean and cheese burrito, nachos and 3 drinks and our total was $90... I expect between 90 and 120 for full service restaurants for 2 kids and 2 adults but this absolutely doesn't qualify as full service to any degree. The beans looked like they were scraped out of the bottom of the pot, every single item lacked flavor to the point of us needing to ask for salt for everything we had, fountain drinks had a funky taste like the machine hasn't been cleaned since they opened. If you're looking for a taco shop that's clean enough to dine in, quick, quality and AFFORDABLE, you're 1000% better off going to Jilbertos by the movies. Off the South bound 15 at Center City or short distance from the 78, this place is conveniently located. A portion of the parking was closed off during my visit, but 4 spaces upfront were dedicated to this restaurant. I had to go to San Marcos first thing in the morning and thought breakfast burritos would be nice before going South for a birthday party. They staff were very friendly. People must love this place because I watched as people started showing up and forming a line. I didn't look into the dining room, but the entrance way was well lit and you can see the chef cooking in the background. There is no self-service for drinks, salsa bar, utensils, etc, which helps with sanitation. Ended up ordering the bacon, eggs, and cheese and the carne asada, egg, and cheese breakfast burritos. The portions were good, but felt like it needed pepper. Tried a bite of my friend's burrito and ghought the same. We were staying in the area, looked it up on Yelp. Had good reviews, decided to check it out. First off, staff is friendly and attentive. The young man taking our order was helpful and provided great customer service. We were the only people dining in, it was slow for a Friday night. You get chips and salsa, they were ok. I always enjoy chips and salsa before the meal at a Mexican restaurant but these were not like wow. We ordered and our food arrived about 10-15 mins later. The carne asada fries were ok as well, kinda wish cheese would've been a little melted, it is just fries, grated cheese and guac. Nothing amazing about them. The California burrito was the same, cheese was also not melted which didn't make it too pleasing to eat. My daughter got the cheese enchiladas, which she likes at most Mexican restaurants but she didn't like these. The cheese inside the tortilla was the same as the fries and burrito, not melted, the sauce was not bad. The beef taco was actually really good! & the rice and beans as well. My husband got the carnitas taco, which he didn't like but he enjoyed the adobada taco, he recommends. The horchata was really good. Great Mexican food, we usually stop in once a week to grab a quick dinner. We have tried most of the menu, my go-to faves are the carne asada fries, rolled tacos, and the El Bombaro burrito and my husband loves their California burrito. The wait for food isn't very long, portions are big and the food is usually flavorful and freshly made most of the time, but in the past I have had a few orders that tasted like they were leftovers sitting out for a while or microwaved....it can be hit or miss sometimes. We decided to try a new taco shop while in the area. Parking was easy and plentiful in this strip mall. Unfortunately, they no longer have indoor seating. I'm assuming it's because of Covid or staffing, Luckily, there were a few tables outside. I had the carnitas taco and fries. I was happy that the carnitas were not fatty because I don't like fatty meat. The fries were good. New ownership update- 2022 The last time I was here was right before an ownership change. Then covid happened and this place was in complete lockdown. So I came back to find out if It's as good as it used to be. Not much inside has changed but they've permanently closed down their dining room. They do have a few tables outside. It's basically the same menu as before but better quality food now. Everything was delicious and fresh. Carne asada and California Burritos were both large and generous with the asada.The asada could have used a little bit more seasoning but when paired with their green salsa it was terrific.
