I had a very stressful experience once I started questioning all the fees and itemized charges, as I really had no idea who I had signed on with and how careful I needed to be. I just trusted them - my mistake, as they were a casual recommendation from a friend of a friend. I probably needed a less "powerful" firm, but I had no idea... never had a lawyer before. Definitely find someone less expensive, who has a lower case load, so they can be more of a team with you. I didn't realize I'd be charged for most emails I sent asking clarifications on things or forwarding documents. I thought communication would make the case more efficient, not more expensive! But again, they charge by increments of time, which I now know is standard and their rates are high (I had no idea). They did get the job done and definitely earned some of what I ended up having to pay them, as the situation I handed them was mess in some regards, I will give them that, but I didn't feel like they were necessarily working for my best interests so much as maximizing their own profit. My lawyer was very intelligent. His paralegal was very professional. If you can afford them, fine, but I would not go with them again or recommend friends or family to do so, as they are really out of my bracket. I'm giving them 3 stars as they achieved the objectives I gave them, but feel like they are overly expensive and not client focused.
