The funny thing about this location is I haven't been here probably since 2016 when I came to Madison for business. I recall it being a German restaurant and decided to take my family there for Fourth of July since we really didn't know what else to do in town. We weren't gonna barbecue. We opted to start with the four soft pretzels, which were delicious although the Sauerkraut cheese sauce was not our favorite. I ordered the bratwurst on a pretzel roll as did my kid. We also ordered the fish and chips, which were also delicious. They have live entertainment as you can imagine it's polka centric. Cool dark pub interior. Service was friendly. We also enjoyed the cherry strudel. We parked on the street about a block away. It was nice to return and have some German food. We probably would visit again in the area.

Really nice "German" restaurant. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Food is very good and plentiful as it shares the kitchen with Come Back In. Been going here for many years and one of the original Stein Club members. That is the good news. Now the unfortunate- closing August 31. https://madison.com/life-entertainment/local/food-drink/essen-haus-come-back-in-closing/article_73154f06-393e-11ef-a2c6-7b6856e642ec.html Update on closing - https://madison.com/life-entertainment/local/food-drink/essen-haus-reopening-temporarily-auction/article_5eedf766-66fd-11ef-9015-a76582f87c69.html

Was planning to visit a Yelp restaurant and passed this beer garden that had a big crowd at picnic tables drinking steins and made a change of plans. When I walked up they were having an old fashioned cookout with ribs and Kraut, mashed with gravy and green bean casserole. $7 cash! Delicious. I washed it down with a $3 Bitburger tap. German beer is so good. Service was friendly and they cut me in on the stein club price. Well played amigos! BTW Madison is awesome

Great place to stop at if you like German food and drinks. They have a large selection of beers on tap and their food is good too. On Fridays they have live polka bands so stop on by and give this place a try.

Old, incredibly charming. Never had the food. Only the boot. Sad to see the haus go even if it isn't the spot I frequent most.

Most fun I've had at a restaurant in Madison....and that's sayin something! Live music, good food, on point service and beer in a huge glass boot. Watch the boot, it burps and is expensive if you break it (I know first hand). Definitely going back and bringing a bigger crew with me

This is my favorite bar in Wisconsin. The atmosphere is awesome with the staff dressed in German attire. Always has great live Polka bands. Great beer and always great service.

Place just isn't like it used to be. Mostly because the staff seems to not care, sloppy uniforms and a dirty bar

Would have been 5 stars but the potato pancakes were overdone and liver dumpling soup was too salty.

Get a boot and prepare yourself for a good night. Very cool environment for drinking, talking, and dancing once the band got going!

Where else in Madison can you chug down a full boot of beer as people in kilts egg you on while pounding furiously on the tables?

The hanger steak seemed a bit small in size, but was far more tender than usual, perfectly cooked medium rare. The skinny frites were the perfect accompaniment as expected in Paris. I inquired about the provenance of the Pinot and Cabernet. the server presented the physical bottles and gave me a taste of each, $14. The Pinot was very good, and the Cabernet was excellent, value significantly exceeding the price in my opinion, My dining neighbor received a gigantic piece of German chocolate cake, prompting my audible gasp. Then ordered - Excellent also. I'm coming back tomorrow Don't need to try another restaurant in Galena.

From the moment we made our reservation, the staff was incredibly accommodating. By no means is this a typical "bring the kids" type of dining establishment, but sometimes parents just gotta do what they gotta do... and the staff at Fritz and Frites were truly so kind and accepting. The kids drew with crayons on the table paper cover and ate some delicious mac and cheese from the sides menu. They were as content as the adults were with their meals! Speaking of our meals, I ordered the Poulet Roti. An absolutely delicious roasted chicken dish, which I believe is the best chicken I've ever tasted! I can't wait for our next trip to Galena, just for another dinner at this wonderful place.

They had a great salad bar included with every dinner, bread, and a good choice of sides. My wife ordered the blackberry blue cheese pork loin. She was disappointed with her meal, as the pork wasn't seasoned, and the freezer blackberries (not a sauce, as advertised), were overpowered by the large amount of blue cheese. My prime rib special was great! It was advertised as a 12 ounce, but this must have been a full pound. Perfectly cooked medium rare with a seasoned edge, and swimming in a delicious au jus. I also had horseradish on top. The onion rings I ordered as a side also went well as a topping. The Old Fashioneds were good, but not great. If you're going to charge $7, might as well muddle some cherries instead of using a mix. Not a major conlmplaint, but that little extra touch is nice. Their lack of business concerns me- hopefully they do more weekend/fish fry business, but this is a nice place you should check out if you're nearby.
