We went to Cafe Coda for a Friday night concert by Tani Diakite and friends. We had the best time. Tani himself came and introduced himself to us just before the show started. The music was great! It was fun as more and more musicians joined Tani and a few others on the stage. The dance floor was packed, and everyone on stage, or dancing , or listening,seemed so joyful. Such a great space! Attended a networking event in this space for the Urban League Young Professionals group. They bar tenders were nice! The space was perfect for an event. Slightly raised stage perfect for speaking. The lay out of the room made it very easy to mix and mingle with everyone. 100% promote this locally owned business!! read more

Dane County's only black owned bar, nightclub, or music venue. One of maybe two jazz clubs in Madison. Pretty horrible that both of those things are true in 2019. Madison makes it very very hard for both music venues and black owned businesses. We're lucky to have Cafe CODA. Hanah John Taylor, an internationally respected jazz musician and Madison icon, opened this venue to fill the void. It's gorgeous, both spacious and intimate, with a decent stage and sound system and a full bar. He draws a who's who of local musicians, some up and coming, and some out of town acts. Covers are reasonable. To my knowledge no food is served but there's usually a popcorn machine available for free, and many restaurants within walking distance. Some nights offer jazz or funk jams giving musicians an opportunity to sit in. Biggest downside is that there is no offstreet parking, a common problem for Willy St businesses. I wish I had more free time to support Cafe CODA more. If you do, or are looking for a comfortable place to see live music, or even just an east side watering hole, stop by and support Hanah, minority owned business, and local music. Madison needs more places like this. read more

It was like being in a real life "Emperor's New Clothes" novel. I understand that this is a venue for everyone to hear jazz and perform jazz. But if you book a band on a Saturday night with a $10 cover, it should be something special. What I heard and saw seemed more like a practical joke on the audience than good jazz. There needs to be solid performers, not experimentation, on a night with a cover charge. read more

Wonderful live jazz / blues venue in Madison. I visited this quaint, intimate setting three times during grand reopening festivities at their new location at 1224 Williamson in Madison. Friday night at the "soft" opening, saxophonist Hanah Jon Taylor entertained with Leo Dreis on piano and Yosef Ben Israel on bass. Saturday night featured the Alexis Lombre Trio with Alexis Lombre (piano), Brian Juarez (bass) and David Alvarez (drums). Hanah Jon Taylor joined them a few times during their two sold-out performances. On Saturday afternoon about a dozen guests participated in a moving Community Drum Circle led by Rockameen. The new location on Willy Street offers more spacious surroundings with great comfortable ambiance featuring large images of vintage jazz greats. Spirits, wine and beer are served by a generous and friendly staff. Artistic director and well-known jazz artist, Hanah Jon Taylor, promises to feature live jazz artists most nights Tuesday-Saturday, with featured jazz artists every Friday and Saturday night. The ambience is very nice and the crowd mellow, I'll be waiting to hear that cello! Loved the improv which is what authentic jazz music is rooted from and based around is my understanding. As Cafe Coda is now in place and ready to prompt 'we' Madisonian's and beyond to come together as a community of 'open minded' individuals ready for the experience! There's a lot of history behind authentic jazz music and it's origin/history really does & has included a melting pot of peoples throughout the globe, so kudo's to Cafe Coda and of course the most crucial and instrumental part of putting this all together our well seasoned & always simmering Mr. Hannah John Taylor! ; ) Thank you to all that helped to put this club together!
