This was our second visit to this area. They have made some changes to the shop area but, the shops are still filled with lots of gift ideas and local hand made things. The prices are for the most part reasonable and the quality is excellent. Great place to pick up gifts for the Grandchildren. read more

Basically the Das Duchman restaurant gift shop, Essenhaus Village Shops is a simulated village of quant stores of decor, clothing, and items of country/Amish fare. The buildings were once barns and homestead housing of an old farm. They stand in a semi-circle which frames a makeshift courtyard hold art that relates to its original purpose. This configuration makes a natural connection between the shops, a traffic flow guiding visitors in the front of one shop and out the side where the next awaits. Out front was a horse and buggy. It was a large horse. I don't know whether this was part of the places decoration or an Amish visitor or employee. For the shopper that likes old-timey styles this place will be loved. Of most impressive are expensive but craftily handmade quilts sold in the last building. I am not into Amish country fashion, but the tour of these shops reveal its quality to me anyways. I guess I was just expecting more shops. I can't really knocked them too much for my own expectancies. There were literally about 5 shops. My favorite was Dutch Country Gifts. That shop was a up the hill, sort of away from the shops and we started to not even stop in there, I'm glad I did though. I found a 18k gold plated Dutch brand necklace for under $40. The other shops consisted of two home decor shops, one had mostly county themed decor. The other had floral decor, clocks and religious themed home decor. There was also a women's clothing shop, they were running a back to school sidewalk sale, but the style wouldn't appeal to anyone school aged, if you catch my drift. read more

Cute grouping of shops. Lots of Christmas and home decor. I found a variety of things to buy from cashmere scarfs to toys.

Stopped in on a Saturday just for something to do. They shops were cute with the usual things--decorations, candles, quilting things, furniture, etc. There was a lot to browse and look at. The air outside was so aromatic, that we decided to go ahead and eat even though weren't that hungry. That's some serious aroma. The restaurant was PACKED, but our lil party of 2 was immediately seated. For $12/each we stuffed ourselves with amazingly good fried chicken, mashed potatoes, chicken gravy, beef gravy, stuffing, scalloped potatoes, beef, spaghetti, veggies, a huge salad bar, cold salads, and a bunch of other things. The fried chicken and stuffing were the winners in my eyes. The waitresses will bring bread out to you, and the homemade apple butter and peanut butters will put your granny's to shame. This is complete comfort food and will remind you of Sunday dinners at your grandparents' as a kid. Nostalgia. The only sadness is that the only dessert option was potluck style pudding or an angel food cake/raspberry/whipped cream thing (which was delicious but I had my heart set on the pies that was advertised everywhere).
