As with all of the Santiago Metro stations I utilized this week, Estación Escuela Militar is clean and well it and devoid of litter. It is also very limited as far as handicapped access. Stairs only. There are a number of bus connections at street level. From the name, you can easily deduce that the station is located near the military school and indeed it is right next to it. The station is on Line 1, between Alcantara (towards San Pablo) and Manquehue (towards Los Dominicos).

Their system works well, the trains are often and clean, the stations are clean and well-lit and there is very little confusion about where the lines go or how you use it. It's all ONE zone, so none of that complication like London. It's all ONE company, so none of that complication like Tokyo. Easy! The lines are simple. They go from one end of town to the other or from the north end to the south. Sure, the trains don't go everywhere and there is a lot of the city that is not close to a station. But the main parts of downtown are well covered. As of 2018, there are no more single ride tickets. You will need to purchase a "Bip!" card, which you can do from any staffed counter. You load credit onto the card at any automated machine and they all accept cash and credit. You only need one card. You just wave it at the reader once for each person you're purchasing a ticket for. That's great! I have to say, I'm a fan. It would be "As good as it gets" when the train goes to the airport. Even the closest station is a few miles ride.

You purchase a Bip! card (about $2.50), which stores money value on it, and you can reload the card at any station, via person or machine. You tap the card on the turnstile machine upon entrance only. There are 3 price levels: rush hour, regular, and low. The difference between rush & regular is only 10 cents or so. You are charged for each ride (660 pesos, about a dollar), and there is no day pass or week pass. This is a bargain compared to the US - but you have to plan your trip since each trip will cost you. And yes, this system is extremely crowded most of the time. It's not really worth it to wait for the next uncrowded train because they will all be crowded. Trains run the entire length of the station, and are pretty frequent during the day. I mainly only took the Line 1, since it served my area and downtown. Most signs are in Spanish & English, so you can get by if you are good with directions. I never felt threatened or unsafe on the metro. There is a security presence at most stations near the turnstiles.

This major transfer station is horrible in the mornings. It is located in El Barrio Universitario…read more(the university neighborhood) which is exactly what it sounds like. Lots of of students and lots of universities. Because this metro station is right in the middle of the University neighborhood lots of students are going to and from this metro station in the mornings. If you get on the metro here around 7:30 am you should be fine. Anything after 7:30, between 8 am and 10am and be ready to wait for the mad rush of people getting on and off the metro. Besides the terrible rush hours this metro station is super convenient as it connects the red line with the yellow line. In fact it is one of the few metro stations that transfers to the yellow line. Be careful not to get lost in this metro station as it is one of the bigger ones in Santiago.

There is a huge painting right outside of the metro station which gives it a little added warmth. Bella Artes is connected to the green line and is just one stop away from Baquedano transfer point ( that's the convenient part). I live right between metro Bellas Artes and Metro Santa Lucia and I can cheat time every once in a while and jump on the Bellas Artes (green line) and get to the Baquedano transfer station and over to the red line. This literally saves you two whole metro stops and really makes the difference if you are running late to work like I always am. The inside of the station is also super simple. You can pull money out at the ATM machines located inside and charge your BIP (metro card) with either cash at the counter or through the automatic machines.

Centro Puerto and another bús company offer daily rides to and from the center of the city. Fares are very cheap and the ride is nice. Upon leaving the airport you will see a sign advertisement for rides. Once you purchase your ticket you wait outside for a charter bus to pick you up. There's a few choices in stops that you driver can make, although ,everyone seemed to get off at the final stop which is right smack dab in the city. I never worried about timing as they came like clockwork. They said every 10-15 minutes but there was always 2-3 busses waiting in the city and even after purchasing my ticket at the airport there was already a bus waiting outside. So no worries with time at all! Just hop on and enjoy.

Hoy, 3 de agosto de 2024, dos buses (patentes PXT-X35 y PXT-X48) decidieron no detenerse en la parada de Las Rejas a las 13:44 y 13:50, respectivamente, causando un retraso significativo en mi agenda. Los choferes son increíblemente deficientes y no consideran los tiempos de retraso que afectan a los usuarios que dependemos de este servicio para llegar al aeropuerto. La falta de profesionalismo y compromiso es evidente. ¿Cómo es posible que un servicio tan importante para los viajeros sea tan negligente? ¡Es inaceptable! The staff was super friendly and went out of their way to answer any and all questions. FYI, most tourist attractions are closed on Monday, you might be better served to plan something else than going to museums, and riding the gondola on a Monday. The buses were clean, the recording that you listen to, comes in a variety of languages and is extremely boring and useless. I've been on various bus tours in other cities with a live tour guides and it makes a world of difference, imho. We flew into town at 7:30 am and needed something to do until the hotel room was ready. Why not get the lay of the land, relatively cheaply with a hop on hop off bus tour, it drops you off at the most popular tourist spots. The overall length of bus tour without getting off is about 2 1/2 hours depending on traffic. Public Banos are few and far between, so take advantage when around one :-). Overall I give it 3.5 stars, but round it up to 4 because all 5 of the employees I interacted with, did an excellent job.
