I'd like to advise anyone and make aware that whoever is thinking about planting a memorial tree for their loved ones to be very careful. Cape May County Park North (aka Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary) is apparently a hot secret, because…read moreonly one other car was in the parking lot when I was there on a weekday in the summer. This is a BEAUTIFUL park / wildlife refuge. Trails wind everywhere through the woods, to hammock clearings, scenic spots with benches to sit, a few ponds stocked with ripe lilly pads, picnic areas, a park office, etc. This park is extremely well maintained, with no litter anywhere. Yes, DOGS ARE ALLOWED here. Despite contrary info I got from calling the parks office, there are signs stating the rules for dogs to visit the property, dog waste stations with bags, etc. Well behaved, leashed dogs, are permitted. This is a wildlife sanctuary, so it is lucky they have recently chosen to allow this. It's less than a 10 minute walk to the first pond, and that alone is worth the trip. There are little islands in the pond, with benches on them. Really enchanting. The history of this property is that in the late 19th C, sand was mined here to make cement for Ocean City, as well as to make South Jersey Glass. The Great Depression ended production here, and the landowners filled the sand quarries with water, and stocked them for their own leisure fishing. The property was willed to the county in 1988 to be made into a park. In the summer, you MUST wear bug repellent. Even with repellent, I was covered with mosquitoes if I stopped walking for a few seconds. So just beware and be prepared. While picnicking would be serene here, it is probably best to do it in the months when mosquitoes aren't around. Also, gate locks at 4pm sharp!

The main feature of the park is a brick path that leads to a central fountain with a beautiful figure drinking from a cup. A number of benches around so that you can enjoy the park though there is considerable traffic along Main Street as it intersects with US-40. That said, this is really worth a visit, and is one of Natural Lands' more enchanting properties. I have visited the NJ Pine Barren trails, and am familiar with the landscape. This preserve had the typical hollies and pines, lichens and moss, sandy ground, swampy spots, etc., but the trees grew a bit higher here, and the canopy felt more thinned out, with more sunlight penetrating to the trails. It had a really neat feel. This is a large preserve, so I did not explore nearly enough of it. I look forward to visiting again! There is a gravel parking lot for this preserve. Trails off the lot are well cleared and free of rocks or roots, and are mostly flat. This is a good option for disabled people, young children, and dogs. Pristine clean, like all NL preserves, this was free of litter, and no dog mess anywhere. This was my 19th out of 20 Natural Lands preserves, and I can say, it was one of the top 5 to explore!

This is a very pretty park in Millville along the Maurice River. There are two playgrounds, one at…read moreeither entrance. Note that you cannot drive all the way through from one entrance to another, but each has its own parking lot. The park is not huge, like for hiking or biking, but it does allow for a short walk across the pond bridge, and across the river bridge to the park across the river (Captain Joseph Buck Park), where there is a paved trail along the river. The playground at the City Park Drive entrance is older and while it still works, there is only one small climbing structure and the swings, etc. are not as exciting as the other area at the Brandriff entrance. A Mister Softee ice cream truck visited at the Brandriff entrance while we were there, and a number of local kids were there playing. They were super friendly and sweet. Usually I love to rate any greenspace high stars, but my negatives here are really upsetting, and can't go ignored. There were dangerous people behaving oddly just across the river at the foot of the bridge. It appeared illegal deals or illegal substance use was going down right over the bridge. Needless to say, this is absolutely unacceptable around children, and the adults on the playground were wary and nervous as well. Who knows how dangerous that activity can get, but as soon as we saw why other parents were nervous, we immediately left. Absolutely disgusting in broad daylight, with children around, and where are the cops? On the way out, there was broken glass everywhere from someone breaking all the (formerly nice) lampposts, and it looked like they'd been shot at or punctured with a rock, so as to darken the area for nefarious night activity. Such a shame. They've put a lot of money and planning into these dual parks, and the locals really need it. Three stars for the civic efforts, and for those sweet kids and their terrified mothers, who are doing their best keeping safe there to play.
