We spent many minutes viewing the surrounding city--the 25 de Abril Bridge, the Sanctuary of Christ the King, Sao Jorge Castle, the Tagus estuary, the orange rooftops of buildings, and much more. The only negative aspect of this area was two women who were pressuring us to purchase jewelry, and they refused to accept our no's. Our tour guide, however, intervened and told them something in Portuguese to get them to leave us alone.

We enjoyed eating authentic Portuguese foods. Unfortunately, we missed out on listening to Fado music. I was here during daylight, and unlike some of the other Yelp reviewers, I never got lost, I never felt unsafe, and nobody mistreated me. The buildings were obviously old but were not in bad condition or dirty. I read that the neighborhood has been invested in and spruced up in recent years.

Locals were out cooking on the sidewalks like they paid rent for the cobblestones, music was blasting from speakers that definitely failed an EU noise ordinance, and everyone was very merry. Alfama is Lisbon's oldest quarter, which is code for don't even try to use Google Maps. The streets are aggressively charming, like they dare you not to fall in love. This is a must walk around in if you're in Lisbon.

Countless restaurants, bakeries, chains and independent stores. Besides Rua Augusta and its side streets the Rua Garrett is surely worth checking out. Like mentioned in another reviews, the restaurants on Rua Augusta are good for drinks and people-watching, but I would avoid eating here. Menu, quality and value are just not good enough.... but there is lots of good food in this city. Rossio and the Praca Do Comercio are surely other must-dos. But make sure to walk along the smaller streets in the west of Chiado too (close to Bairro Alto), lots of charm here! Some of the parallell streets to Rua Augusta get pretty quiet at night. Nothing scary, but not much to see or do though. From some angles you also can get nice views of the Castelo, especially at night a colorful sight!

Part of the café is indoors and part is in a garden courtyard. Beautiful sculptures and flowers. We got here on the bus but you could also Uber. Bus stop is very close but it's a bit out of the way from the main touristic areas. I would budget about two to three hours here depending on how interested you are in the tiles. Definitely have a drink and a snack and enjoy the courtyard garden area. Shop was well stocked, reasonably priced and featured some work by local artisans.

It was a 30 minute max type of museum unless you're going to stop and read every single thing about every single tile in this place...which I guess people must do. One thing that was incredibly cool is the panoramic view of what Lisbon used to look like before the big earthquake they had. It's interesting to see what monuments survived, which ones didn't and what stands there today. Overall, if you have extra time during your trip this isn't a bad way to spend it - I just wouldn't plan on being here for hours and hours (unless you really, really want to).
