La Scuola is absolutely comparable to them and I am happy to add that the Faculty is caring, enthusiastic and very attentive to each and every need of the kids. The bi-lingual education (+ French as a third language) is an incredible plus, and also for an American student it is a great privilege to read immortal authors in their own languages, English, Italian, French or Latin. The International Baccalaureate Diploma, also, is a great opportunity for kids to challenge themselves (and la Scuola is among the very few schools in NYC to offer it!) and an effective boost for the most important College Institutions around the world. Last but not least: at La Scuola, kids did not loose a single hour, due to the pandemic. They immediately set up a perfect environment for online schooling, and since the reopening in Sept 2020 they are at school in person. Dwight also strives to find the "spark of genius" in every student and supports this philosophy with a robust after school programming curriculum (Bulls and Bears stock market training, Cooking Wars cooking classes). Their theatre programming in middle/high school is college/graduate school level. My daughter went to this school after many other more "prestigious" independent schools in the city let us down-Dwight was superior! Why? Because Dwight is completely devoted to seeing the "spark" and potential of every student. She is now a straight A student at an Ivy-I only mention this for the status obsessed parents perhaps reading this review-and about to deride the school. Also, she was incredibly well-prepared to succeed in college due to the IB curriculum. The faculty at the school are devoted and brilliant and really care about the students. My son is now enrolled-what is extraordinary about Dwight is the school also acknowledges and has a program devoted to helping different learners-both my kids are dyslexic. Most other private schools have "a learning specialist" often well-intentioned, but not properly trained and most importantly without proper resources from the administration to actually help students. Dwight knows that many learning disabled students are very smart, but need some extra support. Many other private schools prefer to "counsel these kids out" or say the students aren't academically strong enough to handle the curriculum. Thank you to Dwight for being a thought leader and not stereotyping learning disabled students! My daughter transferred from one of the large New York City specialized schools. There she felt, lost in the shuffle, and completely unsupported both academically, as well as emotionally. Both kids actually look forward to going to school in the morning. They feel challenged, motivated, and respected. The teachers at Smith have an uncanny ability to meet kids at their individual levels and needs. They listen to the kids, thus allowing them to have a voice and feel control over some aspects of their education. He went from D's and F's in public school to straight A's in the Smith School.
