The restaurant is small with cafeteria style tables. The owner is very nice so I hope this place succeeds. Plenty of off street parking in the shadow of St Joseph's Hospital. Had the misto (doro wat, key wot and tubes) and added side of misir and gomen). Never had Ethiopian food before so nothing to compare to. There are no eating utensils so you grab the food with the enjera bread which is a light fluffy bread made from teff that is supposed to be diabetic friendly. Not a great place for a first date unless they are the adventurous sort. That being said I don't care if it's authentic, only if it tastes good. Went here for lunch today. Quiet, plain dining room, which made it easy to converse. The waiter took our order after we studied the menu a while, and we were served fairly quickly. The food was excellent, served on injera, which,if you haven't had it, is a spongy flatbread used to scoop up the veggie or meat dishes with your fingers, and is delicious. We had a variety of things from slightly spicy lentils to cubes of stewed beef. Reasonably priced and large portions. I had to take half of my lunch home with me. Will definitely go back! read more

This place is overrated. They got a lot of hype in a CNN article so I felt compelled to check it out. The tibs (meat) were very chewy and lacked flavor. The yellow lentils were bland. The greens were well seasoned and delicious. The salad was lettuce swimming in salt with two cherry tomatoes. The vegetarian platter had two items that were good (the greens included) and the rest were average at best. The Ethiopian coffee is basically a strong shot of coffee (Italian espresso style). I particularly enjoyed the spiced black tea. The prices are very reasonable ($37 for the vegetarian platter, the tibs, a coffee and a spiced tea). Parking is in the street and metered. The space is small and unpretentious, they recommend reservations but we saw many people walking in without reservations and getting seated. That being said, we were here on a Tuesday 5-630pm. Overall, I'd say that food quality is average, at best, for Ethiopian. I recently had outstanding Ethiopian in Rochester. Buffalo also has several good Ethiopian spots. And, of course, so do larger cities like NYC and DC. That being said, I haven't had other Ethiopian in Syracuse so it's possible that this is the best there is in this city. Each part of the meal had distinctly different flavors, and all were good. The bread had a slightly fermented flavor and complemented the other parts well. Cozy space, very friendly staff, great (and affordable) food. I had the Alicha Wot and a mango smoothie for lunch (around 12:15pm), and was very comfortably full afterward. Providing a counterpoint to one of the other reviews: I found the temperature of the room to be quite comfortable (however, I was seated further back from the door, and "comfortable temperature" is definitely a matter of personal preference). I received plenty of napkins, and all of the tables appeared clean. Several other tables of guests (including a group of 8) arrived after me and all appeared to receive their food promptly. I came in at noon this last week, the owner came out from the kitchen, took my Doro Wat order, and brought an ice cold cup of water that was cleansing from walking around under the battering heat of our warming planet. Don't let the inside put you off: this place is going to fill that tummy of yours at a good price. The dish itself was massive, two large chicken legs lathered in the sauce on top of injera, and three other rolled injera breads around it. By the time I left I was covered in sauce, my steering column lathered like a Amharic speaking sheep herder prepared the interior of my car to be thrown into an earth oven to feed a party. It was excellent to finally get back here after a couple years of laying low. We ordered the "Misto," a mixed platter - key wot, doro wot, and tibs are two beef dishes and one of chicken. We added some vegetables (lentils, cabbage, and kale) and all that atop a wheel of injera bread created a shared meal enough for two of us - filling and delicious - for around $25. The flavors are unique; some are spicy hot, some are subtle, all were excellent. Service is good, no one bats an eye at the typical American request for silverware (it looked like most of the other tables around us did the same), and the chef came out of the kitchen at one point to personally ask us how we liked the food. Ladies and gentlemen, I am here to review the newest Ethiopian-Eritrean Restaurant, aptly titled EthioEritrea. Myself and friends walk in the restaurant at approximately 2:30 to see a very small environment with about ten tables, each seated with people besides one. There is a woman sitting in the corner of the the room brewing up pots of coffee used for an Ethiopian-Eritrean tradition that is supposed to bring members of communities together in times of conflict during the war between the two countries. It's poured from a device called a Jebena. So, we sit and order one medium sized Jebena amongst the three of us and we order two dishes, mind you these are family-style so it's finger food that you share amongst your group. The dishes that we ordered were called Doro Wot (Spicy Chicken sauce cooked with butter, onion, chili, garlic and other spices, and served with a hard boiled egg) and the Alicha Wot (Cubed prime beef sautéed and cooked with onion, turmeric, and purified Ethiopian butter). Everything was well and good, but this is where things get a bit tricky for the restaurant. To our knowledge, there were about three people that we saw working in the center part of the restaurant. In the back, I assume there is a maximum of two people in the kitchen. We waited a long, long time for just about everything. With all the press that this restaurant is receiving currently, I am sure they are likely just very overwhelmed with the fact that there are an absurd amount of people coming in to eat. After waiting approximately an hour and fifteen minutes, the food and coffee arrive. We received a large platter covered in a sponge-like bread with the food that we ordered atop of it. The Alicha Wot is my opinion was far superior to the Doro Wot, despite what I thought before ordering the items. The spice level was just right in the Doro Wot, but the flavor of the Alicha Wot was simply sublime. The bread was served somewhat cold, and the texture was extremely interesting. It was somewhat similar to that of tripe. After the meal was done, we paid and left. The totals for each of us was approximately sixteen dollars, and I feel decently full. I believe that I would be able to eat again after this, but I also think that it would have to be something light or healthy. Overall, the ratings are as follows: Food: 8.75/10 Service: 3/10 Ambiance: 6.5/10 Price: 5.25/10 Overall Value: 7.25/10 I would recommend to a friend, but I would specifically tell them to go during warmer months, and also when the hype kind of dies down over the next couple of weeks. I am excited to see the progression this place undergoes and see how they evolve as a restaurant. read more

I have been to many Ethiopian restaurants around the world. I never am disappointed. This restaurant food is on par with them all. Slightly nicer decor than most. This restaurant excels in the friendliness of staff and the lovely presentation where the food on our sampler platter was individually placed on our platter at our table. This is a platter for three, with a beef dish called Alicha Wot and another called Tibs, both spread over a thin pancake-like spongy bread called Injera. Ate here twice before the quarantine. First time I went in the evening right after their big write up and it was great but a bit slow. Not a probable as I had good company. The second time I went in my lunch break the service was very quick and again the food was excellent. Not times we got the vegetarian combo with some meat dishes added and shared everything. I will only say that if you are used to bland or pedestrian meals this is not that. It's served on a sourdough flatbread that is not a familiar flavor to western palettes, but entirely delicious. This place is so small and unassuming from the outside that you might miss it and boy would you be missing out. EthioEritrea Restaurant is a one of a kind experience in Syracuse. My wife and I had dinner on a Friday night and we were lucky to get in. I recommend calling ahead or using google to make a reservation. The food is not only delicious but such a fun experience to eat. We got the Vegan Special Combo which was served on a large sourdough pancake type bread called injera. You rip off pieces of the injera to eat the lentils, beets, and chickpea dishes with your hands. The lentil and vegetable dishes were mild to moderately spicy and all very delicious. Very reasonable price for the amount of food in that dish. This new restaurant needs help. The building is freezing cold especially by the door. We waited an hour and a half for our food. We had to wipe our table off ourself since we were seated at a dirty table. We did not receive napkins and since you eat with your hands. Absolutely delicious! The gomen (collard greens and kale) is the best I've ever had, and they have a great variety of vegetarian and vegan food. When they roast the coffee beans in the dining area over an open flame, it smells so, so good. Definitely going there regularly. read more

The worst Ethiopian food I've ever had. Coming from NYC and had real tasty food this was by far one of the worst food experiences I've had. After working a a long shift without break this was so upsetting. I don't know what was worse though... watching her use her fingers to taste the food while cooking or the nasty bathroom, which rule of thumb describes the kitchen.
