My kid is not particularly obnoxious. Mainly because I have spent years of putting him in check and shooting the dagger eyes at him from across the table. What are dagger eyes you ask? Those are the eyes that let you know your mom is about to get buck wild on your ass if you continue to act like a fool in public. I don't know if you have ever seen the wrath of a Mexican woman, but I am telling you right now, its not pretty. Last summer I was in France and some kid at breakfast kept spraying unnecessary amounts of whipped cream out of a can on to his waffles and laughing about it. His parents kept lovingly tapping his arm and telling him in their "inside voices" that it was "not okay to be wasteful, Ethan." In this situation, my kid would have been dead meat a long time ago but since he wasn't there, I shot the dagger eyes to little Ethan. One would have thought that little Ethan saw a ghost after our eyes met. He immediately handed over the can of whip and his parents thanked him with looks of relief on their faces. (And all of these years I thought the daggers only worked on my kid!). My kid is a little older now, so the dagger eyes don't get used very often. Lately, his biggest transgression is to complain that he is bored and demand that I entertain him when all I want to do is finish the Buns of Steel video I am in the middle of. This is when a place like Ethos comes in handy. It has an all around good vibe upon entering, and they are a non-profit gig with a passion for teaching. They offer just about any and every kind of instrument lessons, and discounts to children who are on free or reduced lunch. Their standard lesson prices are very affordable: $149 for 8 guitar lessons. There are also instrument rentals for those who can't afford or are undecided on what instrument they will stick with. The teachers are friendly and communicative AND there is a coffee joint in the lobby where you can catch up on reading and drink tea while you wait. Overall a good place to ditch your kid while boosting his confidence and gaining piece of mind for yourself. One of the best thing about Ethos? There are tons of little kids that hang out in the lobby for me to "accidentally "shoot my daggers at, should they decide to act like fools in public. : ) read more

Ethos is 100% focused on those who cannot afford music lessons. While that is a good thing in some aspects, for those who are fortunate enough to be able to pay for lessons, prepare to take a back seat. Ethos fails to realize who us actually paying their bills and is shortsighted in their business plan. The saddest part of Ethos is that the problems start at the top, with the Board, and roll downward. It's the kids who pay the price for their incompetence. read more

I've been feeling bad about not posting reviews of places I truly love. I have some down time now so thought I'd start getting after it. I know 5 star reviews, if being totally objective, should be rare. But if it is a 5 star, then it's five stars. Ethos Music is most definitely a 5 star rating. My son has been taking lessons from Ethos for probably 10 years now. He started with group drum lessons, then private lessons, then moved into their rock band and jazz band groups. He now spends time as a TA for the kids music camps. The experience has been just amazing for him. If you have a youngster interested in trying an instrument or even singing, please give Ethos a try. Their prices are good and the staff is amazing. They truly care about their students and the music community as a whole. It's absolutely a feel good place. Ethos is an amazing organization that I am proud to support both in spirit and financially. With a mission that serves students who normally are shut out of arts education, it's a sorely needed resource in our community. Music and arts education is essential to helping students build confidence and self esteem and is directly correlated with success in other areas of school and in matriculation to college. As a college consultant, I am impressed with the work that Ethos does, and when I attend events, the only proof I need in judging Ethos' success is the smile on a performer's face. As a donor, I appreciate that Ethos is fiscally sound and stays mission-focused. It's Board, Staff, and Executive Director are to be applauded for the many hours they spend ensuring that they affect positive change within our community. In response to Rpw's earlier comments, I'd much rather my donations support students who cannot afford music opportunities than subsidizing a wealthy person's child who is taking advantage of low fees for instruction that are well below general market standards. Summer Camp was awesome! My kids and a couple of their friends just completed a week of summer camp at Ethos and they had an amazing week learning music and having a blast. I was impressed with JC, the camp director, and surprised to see how many excellent instructors and helpers they had on hand to ensure the kids had a quality music experience. They have two sessions each day where they practice music in small groups and then they switch off and do choir and art. They also have a good spot of time mid day to run around and eat lunch outside. All in all, I thought it was a balanced experience and ideal for ages 7 or 8 through 11 or 12. Much more appropriate than School of Rock for younger kids (which I think is more appropriate for middle school aged kids and above). My boys and their cousin are 9 and 10 and loved it - we'll be back next year and will be looking into lessons in the meantime. read more

We have had only wonderful experiences at Ethos! Our most recent instructor, Adrian Baxter, is an extraordinary teacher. He teaches with patience and listens to his students, as well as being an amazing musician himself. Our child had constantly quit projects and instruments until meeting Adrian. Now they are completely devoted to the trumpet and love attending classes, even online (now in time of Covid). I am so grateful for Ethos and for Adrian--they have brought a richness to our lives.
