Maybe drives and people are the same...the harder you try, the worse the shot ends up. (Tee boxes and fairways are great here. Tee boxes were aerated recently, but plugs were all gone. Center cut of fairways is narrow in places, but that makes it fun!) Playing from the tips, I can score in the 80's here, but scoring a long term friendship with people I care about seems to evade me. (Low scores at this course are generated by playing smart. With lots of creeks and water your shot selection needs to include several layups and specific yardages to put you in a good position to hit the green.) I can usually read a green better than I can read a person. However, the greens here are tough. You first think it will go left, but then you walk it and maybe it will go right, so you don't give up the cup and run it 4 feet past the hole to the right. (Sometimes you just have to go for it, even if failure is imminent.) A lot of people don't understand golf. A lot of people don't like golf, or those that play. That's ok...I don't understand a lot of people. Love the bridges, scenic views, and an obviously well cared for track.

The carts are junky and I have never experienced worse cart paths. They are all made of dirt and gravel. They also don't allow spectator carts so don't expect to get to ride and watch someone play. Don't believe the website or the pictures you may see of this course. There are very few spots that actually look like a proper golf course. Not to mention the prices are crazy for this kind of condition. Everyone we have brought here today and even talked to has had something bad to say about this course. No wonder the only reviews were from 7 years ago. Even if it is a 36 hole course, it's a terrible time and not worth your money, or your sanity. I would rate this 0 stars if I was allowed.

I've played here twice now, the last being a few months ago. Tee boxes, fairways, rough, approaches and greens were in beautiful shape even with the deluge of rain we had. The clubhouse, carts and cart paths are pretty basic and don't match up to the same quality of the course, but I'm there to play the links. It's the kind of place where you are led through and rarely see the other holes while you are on your hole...however, we did see the same deer a few times, just wandering around! We were looking for a new place to eat, and we read that there was a restaurant here. When we got…read morethere, we were informed the restaurant had closed 3 years ago, but the former president of the country club, Al Harker, gave us suggestions of other nearby restaurants. Then, he chatted us up and suggested we try a free 18 holes of golf and think about joining the country club. Mr. Harker is a great pitchman. We took him up on his offer and came the next weekend and played 18 holes. We were sold by the 5th hole. The first few holes are gorgeous, as they are on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Shafer and expensive homes. The last 9 holes are long, across the street and also fun to play. This is the nicest golf course in Monticello, and I imagine in and around this area. The membership for people under 40 is only $450.00. When you play, it's only $8 for 9 holes or $16.00 for 18 holes with a golf cart. When the kids at the clubhouse see your car approach, they bring a golf cart to you. Now that's service. The PGA pro, Jim, runs the golf shop and gives lessons. He's also very, very nice. The bartender, Angel, is friendly and will tell you lots of interesting things going on in and around town. We've had our vacation home for 3.5 years, and sadly, we've found the locals in Monticello to be less than friendly, and our neighbors have got to be the most suspicious, unfriendly folks around, but the members at this country club are very welcoming and wave when they see you. The minus one star is for the fact that the country club has no permanent restaurant. The Riverside Restaurant grills from Wednesday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m, and the country clubs offers hot dogs, brats and some fried appetizers. The shop sells soda, candy bars, jerky and potato chips. My biggest gripe though is how gross the bathrooms on the course are. No one has ever cleaned them in years so they are completely unusable, especially for women.

The waitress was average, could have been better, took a little longer then we thought to bring us our drinks ( which mine was completely wrong) and appetizers. The busboy on the other hand was horrible. He came out with our food ( which took about an hour) and ended up giving it to the wrong table. My husband tried to tell him that was our food but he completely ignored my husband and took part of our meal back to the kitchen. At this point we decided not to wait another hour for our dinner, paid for what we actually received and decided we will never return. If you are looking for a relaxing dinner without any hiccups and not too long of a wait I wouldn't recommend this place. A few places I would recommend, Oak & Barrel, Riverside Restaurant & Lounge and Anglers Restaurant, we have never had an issue.

Kampen course is a flashy deep-rough waste bunker Pete Dye design with challenging sight lines that force shot placement. Spray the driver at your peril!
