For 20-plus years I've been making the pilgrimage to Eugene every few years (usually on the occasion of PIELC) -- and without fail, at some point we would end up at Sam Bond's Garage. But this year -- no Sam Bond's. It's turned into the Whit franchise of a pizza place, apparently. (No disrespect to their pizza. It's delicious.) But. What happened to my favorite bar/music spot in Eugene?? Such an unspeakable loss, if this venue is actually permanently closed. I will remain hopeful that it will be reborn... somewhere else? But if not: RIP Sam Bond's Garage. We, from near and far, loved you. Thank you for the good times you gave us all.

The food options are great. Sandwiches, hummus plate, soft pretzel, soup, and slices of pizza. Vegan and meat options and something for everyone. We've seen some great music here sitting at a table and dancing up front. There's a nice area outside that's dominated by smokers, but to each their own. We just love catching a show here!

The bartenders work non stop to get your drinks and food out quickly. My daughter loved the churro style donuts (but they are messy). The decor is a D&D dive bar scene....so many things to look at as you wait for bingo to start. They just changed the rules and you do have to pay $1.00 per person to play bingo...but where else can you get that type of entertainment for a dollar. We can't wait to return.

Then, less than a week before the event, they admitted they had double-booked the date because they put it on the wrong day in their calendar. That's fine. Sometimes things like that just happen. Instead of making it right, they wanted the band that booked first to move their show to 2:00 in the afternoon on a Thursday. That's ridiculous. People weren't traveling to Eugene to watch an afternoon set while they're at work. The band tried to work with them. They suggested combining the shows, asked to talk it through, and then got ignored. After that, when people started calling out how badly this was handled, the response from the venue wasn't an apology--it was telling people to "eat shit." That's honestly what changed this from a scheduling mistake into a venue I don't want to support. Everyone screws up sometimes. Most businesses own it and try to fix it. Campbell Club chose to insult the very people who were trying to bring customers through their doors. If you're planning to travel for a show here, I'd think twice. I won't be making that mistake again. Also-- their Instagram says they are a nonprofit organization, it's not.

I overheard someone say that during the show if you attempt to go down the stairs from the balcony (like to get to concessions) the stair way is completely pitch black and hazardous.

Well, that's a little incorrect; they were around…read morewhen I was in middle and high school, but as a summer program or resident company at the Hult Center known as OFAM, the Oregon Festival of American Music. Until this past weekend, I hadn't been to a program at their own year-round space that's been here for 25 years or so now. (But I don't feel too bad about that since my sister, who's lived here all her life, has only been once.) Anyway, I brought my toddler to their Magical Moombah show, which is designed specifically for children. We had a lot of fun! It was held in the Jacqua concert hall. The show was kind of variety/vaudeville in style; this one was called Come Sail Away, and it had a loose story made up that was connected by pre-existing songs that matched the theme. There were several time when they invited the kids up to participate--a dance party on stage, a couple of joke breaks, a contest or two, and more. It was a great way to let the kids be involved, and even the littlest kids had an opportunity to join in (my two year old was insistent on making her stage debut, though I think she was a bit shy when she was up there dancing with everyone). They hold this program each quarter and I'll definitely be looking for it next time we're home to visit. They also host concerts, musicals, and other programming. There are a couple of performance spaces, the concert hall being the main one and then recital space. The Shedd is also home to a music school, which seems to take place in the newer wing, where students can take private or group lessons. I will say that their website is really frustrating--almost every link would take me to their calendar, even if I was clicking on Faculty or Welcome--so I'm not sure what that's about so I'd suggest just calling if you have questions. There's a fee if you purchase tickets online (and maybe if you purchase in person with a credit card); in person with cash there's no fee. They have a good parking arrangement with the city that allows for free parking on evenings and weekends in the Lane County lot. There's also parking directly behind their north entrance (I'm not sure if that's the city lot or not, but I don't think so). The lot we parked in was kind of frustrating because almost every spot was marked as compact, and in the year 2026 even in Eugene most people have an SUV or minivan or something, and places just need to stop making most of their parking for compact cars. Some fun facts: Ginevra Ralph, who co-founded the Shedd, is the great-granddaughter of John G. Shedd (namesake of Chicago's Shedd Aquarium in addition to this performing arts center). The Shedd is located in what was once the First Baptist Church in Eugene, one of the largest in the city if not the largest at the time. Also, Marin Alsop, a conductor of international renown, was the co-conducted the Eugene Symphony and the Oregon Festival of American Music early in her career. The Shedd really does have a storied history and lots of great things to come.

After standing in line for an hour, we were told the seats on said chairs were too tall at 6", so had to cut through lines to get to a certain tent to have the confiscated. Fortunately they have loaner chairs which was the only plus of this venue. Then we find the choices of food vendors was very slim, causing the lines to be very long. We usually place our seats up high on the slight grade, knowing people like to stand t/o the concerts down low. Last night, it didn't matter as everyone thought it was ok to stand, blocking the view of many people who could not stand due to age, etc. I think the whole venue was mismanaged. More entry gates, food vendors, and encouragement for patrons to remain seated t/o any concert NEED to be utilized.

If you want to subsidize hippies-turned-yuppie remnants leftover from better years then this market is the place for you. You can buy wooden bowls and spoons that have been carved with a lathe. A lathe. That lathe happens to be operated by someone who once visited Woodstock years ago and listened to Jethro Tull piping the green. You can feel original with that wooden bowl. You can stroke it and pretend you are part of the Flower Power generation, replete with love handles and dementia-filled memories of the 70's. Or buy some pottery. Go ahead. It's been painted with gaze and stuff. And then fired in a kiln. For $40 you too can own a hand-thrown mug. Or you can just spend another $40 and sign up for a community college class and hand throw your own mug. Then you too will be qualified to open up a booth at this market and sell mugs to other people! If the local goods and wares don't hold your interest enjoy the many musical numbers performed by musicians who are now tone deaf. You could also try some of the food, which smells like hairy underarms boiling on a ripe summer's afternoon. Don't worry about health codes: everything here is fresh, original, organic! The vegetables were picked last Sunday and the chicken was culled this morning. Ignore the many ear gauges and piercings and knappy dreds littering the food attendant's head whose preparing your burrito: if you find an earring in your salad that's just part of the effect. Embrace the 70's. Isn't it wonderful to relive your parent's rebellion in the 2000's? Finally, remember to tip the locals. There are many of them and they are all uniquely diverse. Look for the toothless people who twitch and mumble to themselves. They carry bags, escort pitbulls (no that wasn't a bite, that was a LOVEbite!) and can be found sleeping on the sidewalk. You can identify them by their odor and the wake of needles they leave behind. Sidestep the haggling by throwing out a dollar every time your run across one. The holiday events are always fun and don't deprive yourself of the epic sourdough bread and fresh-baked sweet treats! I grew up in Eugene, but never went to the OCF until a decade or so after I moved away. It's been…read morearound since the 60s or something (long before I was born), but when I was younger I think it was held in a different location before it moved out to its current location in Veneta. It started as a fundraiser for an alternative school but it's now a 503(c). It's always held the first full weekend in July. Once upon a time, it was a drug filled revelry from what I understand, but they've made it significantly more family friendly over the years. Don't get me wrong--you'll still come across a topless woman or walk through a cloud of pot smoke--but it's not as bad as it once was. And as far as unique experiences go, you'd be hard pressed to find another much like this. It was fun but getting a ticket is a little annoying. You can't purchase tickets there; they must be purchased off-site in advance. I guess it's probably great for crowd control or something--though I don't know that they actually limit the number of tickets--but I don't always remember to plan ahead. Oh well, I guess I'd rather they manage the crowd if that's what it's for. Head over to the parking lot of VRC to pick up your ticket and you can also catch the shuttle there too when the fair rolls around. It's great that they have a shuttle since parking around the place is honestly impossible I think. Unless you're camping, perhaps. There's a lot happening at the Fair, so for those who are quickly overstimulated you should be aware. You'll see stilt walkers wandering around. There's planned and/or impromptu parades that weave through the place. There are troubadours and small ensembles that may pop up, or individuals with a band on their back! You may find a juggler or a few wandering. There's activities for children, like puppet shows or face painting. Alcohol is not allowed on the premises, although there are areas where folks can smoke. There are tons of vendors. It's like the Saturday Market on steroids. There was a booth selling the most beautiful masks; capes and wings; art of various mediums... lots of treasures. There are also a nice variety of food vendors. When I went there was a booth that had beignets and they tasted like they came from New Orleans. There was music of various genres; activities both spontaneous and planned. A booth where you could create your own affirmation. The Oregon Country Fair is truly unlike any sort of fair or festival I've ever been to. I was mad at myself for not having visited sometime when I was growing up and living there permanently instead of waiting until 10 years after I'd moved out of state. But I will return with my little one in tow to enjoy this wacky experience all over again.

Mind you the reason I remembered this local place is during our recent Ice storm they kept heaters going and food for those who needed it and shelter. I decided to add vegan crema and non-dairy cheese for a buck. It hit the spot. I did feel like a fish out of water with all the screens showing baseball as basketball is my jam. I am a huge Warriors fan and sad we lost Donte yet he is going to the Knicks. My sister and I went to the First Friday Art Walk a few days ago and stopped in since it was one of the major stops on the Walk. They have a wide range of art styles represented here; we saw painting, photography, jewelry, fiber arts, and more. The gallery extends invitations artists to be members of the gallery based upon their non-juried art exhibitions that happen twice per year. Whilst the First Friday Art Walk is one way they regularly welcome in the community, they also host a bunch of workshops. I was surprised to see how full their schedule is, and the cost of the workshops are incredibly reasonable--I think I even saw on that accepted donations on a sliding scale. Given its location downtown, it's very easy to visit via LTD or of course by car. There isn't dedicated parking but there's a city lot on the next block, as well as street parking.

It was jam packed with so many things, each section had multiple eye catching and interesting unique things that made you stop in your steps. I loved how they arranged the items as well, some sections have themes, so you are able to go to which style suits your fancy and look amount those items. It makes browsing very easy and enjoyable and actually not overwhelming. Each items seems to stand out on its how with how they arranged it all. As well as having a large selection of great quality items you would have a hard time finding other places, the price is pretty fair, which you gotta love! Would definitely come again!
