Traveling for work and was looking for a place for something to eat with a lively atmosphere. Found on Facebook that Macs restaurant ( also known as the old Vets building to locals) was having blues/ jazz this night. I hopped on yelp to check out reviews of where I was considering... very mixed as well as dated. So decided to try anyway. Was so happy I did. So if you're looking for an upscale fancy dinner this is not your place. But it is elevated bar food. I had the flatbread bbq chicken pizza. Crust nice and crunchy with so much topping the crust had a hard time supporting it when you picked it up to eat. The previous yelp reviews said they waited forever for food. I found the service above average. The restaurant set up is very much like a Lyons's hall. A bar with lots of tables around randomly and of various sizes. So I walked to the bar to find out if I needed to be seated or just help myself. The bartender stated to sit anywhere I wanted. I told her I was interested in food as well so she handed me a menu. I asked if I needed to come to the bar to order and was told I would be waited on. BC of previous reviews I timed stuff. 3 min after sitting at a random table I was acknowledged and told she would be right back. 1 min later she was asking what I wanted to eat and if I wanted anything to drink. The food menu did not have wine only beer and soda. There is a separate menu for wine. Stella, my waitress was back momentarily with that. After placing my order food arrived within 10 min. Nothing like the horrible service I had read about in previous reviews. Thanks Stella for the awesome service! What a disappointment... celebrating our anniversary we made reservations well in advance! Only to find out they did not have a table for us.... So they sat us at the big 10-12 top with a group of un-known people. Well I could fit at the table my handicapped partner was separated from me wedged in between a wall and a huge Dog Kennel with dog inside! Far from what we had planned. Sitting there waiting for someone to at least come take our order... Hell no, they only serve tables with reservations! Which we DID have. After 30 minutes of watching others get help. I could not believe how awful the service was. It's worth prefacing that I am usually pretty understanding of mistakes in restaurant service. However, an hour and a half into our stay, we were still waiting on two of our dishes. We communicated to the waitress what dishes we were missing (nicely, we weren't belligerent about it). Apparently there was a misunderstanding, because shortly after, the hostess came over said that it was the waitresses second day and to "lay off her". How she felt we were being rude, Idk but that wasn't the intention, we just wanted the food we ordered, and didn't explicitly blame the waitress. We received another one of our dishes, while the last dish wasn't brought to us until we left. We had to seek out a waitress or bar tender for everything, our checks, napkins, and our food. We were never checked on for refills or how the meal was going. However, we weren't acting upset about this, we were honestly just in grossed in our own conversations, with the occasional "I wonder where our food is" comment. On our way out, we were unceremoniously told we were not welcome back, which again completely caught us off guard, and I suspect there must have been a misunderstanding. It completely ruined the night for us, and I will happily never return. Food was fine, the atmosphere is cool if somewhat undercut by the hostile service. If the owners hope to keep their customers, they should avoid banning their paying customers over miscommunication. read more

Happy hour small plates are half price, and there is a good selection to choose from. They also happy hour well drinks for $5. However, a gin and tonic (using well liquor) was billed at $6. When I complained, I was told that only "straight" drinks, as in a shot of something, were $5. Anything involving any mixer was more. This seems disingenuous to me. At any other bar in town, gin and tonic, or rum and coke etc. are considered well drinks. I have never heard of their bizarre definition. So before you order a "$5" well drink, be darn sure of what they're going to charge.​​​ read more

The music is good. The food, not so much. I had lasagna my last visit and it was very dry. You don't really get what you pay for either. I got one refill on a soda and they to the glad of with ice and it isn't a pint glass. The service is pretty slow. I am new to Eugene and all I know is for 23 years This place has been amazing with blues and rock! I'm glad to know that they are changing it up and introducing different genres of music and they flipped the menu to a Gastropub style food. Came in to have a quick cocktail while figuring out where to eat, and ended up having a wonderful dinner! Ate at the bar with fabulous service, and enjoyed the vibe, the banter, and the music was an added bonus. The bacon wrapped apricots were unbelievably good. The menu has changed drastically, and the food was horrible, tasteless, and was nothing more than cheap bar food. What a disappointment for a restaurant that has been great for decades. We went on our first visit to Macs because a friend was playing for Valentine's Day. Although we've lived here a long time we'd never been to the vets club. The club is excellent people watching and great food. Service is awesome and friendly and fast. We had appetizers and dessert. Although they were super busy our food was fast and well prepared. Was excited for a Valentines special night! Not one thing went right! Took forever to get the waiter, then when we did it took forever to get our drinks and take our "special occasion menu" order. Sounded amazing, 3 course with salad, pork chop entree and dessert. Still took almost 1 hour to get it. Meal came before salad and when questioned he came back immediately and brought the salad. Now the 4 of us are sitting there with a salad and a hot meal. We are the salad thinking the meal would be better as leftovers. We allowed 2 hours before live music were to start. We flagged him down to order a glass of wine. Put in the order and it never came. Cancelled that drink order and decided to get the check and a To go box so we wouldn't be late for music. After paying the bill we realized we never got our dessert! Asked for that in a to go box as well. It was ice cream so we had to eat that while we listened to the live music upstairs. So many things that could have been easily resolved with proper management. So disappointed because always love the live music. This may have been my last visit. :( read more

I have been wanting to check this place out for a while now. I have heard many great things about it, including the food, the ambiance, and night life. Recently one of our friends invited us to her 50'th Birthday party which she had upstairs in the ballroom. What a great venue for that. She had all of us bring food for pot luck, and for drinks they had a bar set up that we all paid for. There was a DJ there as well, but I think she made arrangements for the Dj to be there. The place was huge, and she had it decorated really nice. I have yet to try the food downstairs, I did how ever peek in while everyone was enjoying themselves while a band was playing, and people were dancing. It was a packed crowd. I can't wait to come back. The building itself is pretty neat inside, with all of the historic pictures. I will have to let you know what I think of the food. My guy has been here on his ride nights with friends and said he likes the ambiance, and the drinks. read more

Went here having seen good reviews for the mac and cheese. They do an interesting interpretation of it with a gorgonzola sauce, slightly Italian tasting, and quite flavorful, even if it's not like the southern style mac I was initially craving. I like that all the food here is clearly homemade the old fashioned way, no shortcuts. Restaurant is doing its utmost to keep up social distancing, and people inside were careful with masks when walking near tables. The particular night I went, it was noticeably an older clientele, perhaps because of the shared space with the vet's club. Visited on a lazy summer Saturday night. They had free music on the lawn out front. The drinks were okay. Wait staff was nice. It's not their bad, but the crowd outside was a bit rude. The only reason that I'm giving the nightclub a one star, which I normally would give 4 to 5 stars but, Thursday I was so rudely informed a by a waiter, that if I wanted a drink or whatever, I should get up, from where I was seated at the table outside and go inside to the restaurant. The only reason why I called the inside of the nightclub is because a waiter or waitress could not be found for quite some time so, I decided to call. I was practically scolded and talk down to condescendedly that if I needed something, go inside and not call they said they were very busy. Well when I arrived at 6:20 there was hardly anybody there and I still had to wait a long time for my drink and food. When I arrived it was 6:20, they were very slow serving the drinks and food then. And then when 7 o'clock came around I expected the band to play but they didn't start playing until 7:45 PM. So that's why I called to find out what's up with the band that they're not playing. I believe the man who waited on me was named Derek! I never so embarrassed in my life!! He is rude an argumentative! It takes a certain kind of person, with the right disposition, and character when you're dealing with the public. Derek in my opinion should change jobs NOT dealing with the public. Bought a gift certificate last winter than I forgot about it. Found it last week and it had expired. I've had very good luck with other expired certificates over the years by being nice. Not Mac's. They were the most hard nosed about refusing to renew. That says something about their business style, so they've just lost forever this past customer. Hope they enjoy the $20 I spent on the certificate and that they won't have to provide any service for. read more

My girlfriend I along with another couple made reservations for Valentines evening to listen to Candy Apple blues. They were great and the venue upstairs was good. However we had dinner reservations downstairs in the main club. We were the second couple in the place so there was no shortage of servers. We had a young guy that apparently was just hired. No excuse for management/aka owners who we're upstairs dancing instead of watching the business. Anyway, three of us ordered the so-called Valentines Dinner Special. We were the first to receive food in the restaurant. It was 3 course. We first receive the main course. Cold and rubber pork. Then the salads show up after about 10 minutes. We ate and had to ask for a check and desert they forgot about. Some might say you just can't find any help because of Covid, I call B/S on that piss pour excuse. I dare the owners to respond with a true apology and not some boiler plate apology. read more

Ive been going to this restaurant for a about a year and usually have had a great experience every time. My last two visits have been horrible both times. Lets start with my visit on halloween i made reservations around 5 for dinner at 645 and had to move it to 730. I was told on the phone that this was not a problem at all. Well my boyfriend and i got there and then 15 min after standing in the middle of the crowded restaurant we find out our table was either never reserved or that another guest took it. Then we were told that they had no more tables and we couldn't be served. About a week and a half ago i called to make a reservation for Saturday November 18th for 20 people so i could enjoy dinner and a band with my family. On the phone i was told that they don't make reservations Friday and Saturday night but that she would write a note since we were a large group. Tonight we got there at 530 and were told we had to be out by 8 for another persons reservation. Then we found out the show starts at 8 not 7 like we thought and that for the show only one table in the back was available. Also we were told the only reason we got in was because we would be out by 8. So apparently yes they do take reservations on weekends but reservations don't mean much at their establishment. We should've gone to BJs at VRC like we had originally planned. The whole point of going to macs was to have a dinner and show and well at least the food was good. read more

I have been going there for 6 years now :-) Always go when Billy D & Hooddo's, Ben Rice, Lisa Mann or Karen Lovely is playing, never miss they're shows. Menu has changed, yet still great food and service!! Pat & Peggy run a good place there and always a nice, friendly crowd. My friends meet up there everytime one of the above musicians play! Always a great time and great fun. Had my last 5 Birthday Celebrations there, if it sucked, would not have gone there all these years :-) As an Old Detroit, MI Boy, It was nice to find Mac's out here !! I didn't like it! What else can I say! Ohhhh wait a tick...I have quite a bit more to say actually... We stopped here for about 2 hours for a friends birthday party. When I arrived the waitress asked what I would like to drink. I asked what they had on tap and all they had was Hop Valley's Alphadelic. Hell yeah!! Better than Total Dom which is at almost every establishment these days. Once my beer was delivered, I instantly noticed that this wasn't an IPA. It was clearly a Lager. How do I know? VERY FEW IPA's have a clear appearance. Hop Venom is one of the clearest IPA's i've seen. However, what I had was Double D Blonde. Considering I was at a table with many people, I wasn't ready to hash out the argument. My 2nd pint of beer was IPA....an accident i'm sure. I was pondering getting some food, but then I seen a few plates delivered. The food looked sad. I felt bad for it. I wanted to put it out of it's missery and find a stray dog on the side of the road and do them both a favor. So when the Lager gal asked me, "What will you have to eat?" I politely declined. I was incredibly hungry too!! That's the sad part. Lastly, when I went to break the seal...I was locked out. The bathroom's are located through some double doors in a hallway. So I had to knock rather loudly on the door so that I could rejoin our group. Thankfully, there was another dinner party sitting down eating who seen me stranded behind the double doors. Don't let the name fool you, this isn't your grandpa's bar! The vets club does have a varied clientle, but it isn't a bunch of older gentleman sitting around like they're at the lodge. They are famous for their beer cheese soup, which has been the same recipe for over 20+ years I hear. You can get a burger and microbrew for $8 on a weekly special. The food is reasonably priced, and is down home cooking good. Staples like chicken fried steak, and pot roast are frequently served. Drinks are strong, music is good and the staff, every accommodating. Nothing pretentious about this local hang out. Come as you are, and you will be greeted with a smile. read more

Macs. You either love it or hate it. We love it! Outdoor music on the veranda in summer, pretty often good blues and dancing indoors. Surprisingly good chef if you stay away from the fried stuff. Macs is a large venue and it wears many hats, so it takes awhile to get to know it. In its own way though, it's a Eugene institution. read more

Honestly have not been there in the evening once yet! I have attended a Networking group there in the day time for lunch a few years back and now I go to a different one once/month there. This is a catered lunch and the staff is very accommodating to us and helpful. Rob is a Great Chef and the food is always Delish! He makes us lovely meals of things like crusted chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad, grilled veggies and cookies for dessert. Brownies are great too! We have had Pork and a variety of other dishes. I have also had their food at networking events. I LOVE the caramel apple martini or mocktini? Bacon wrapped apricots, bacon mac & cheese and a few other appetizers. One of these days I will go there for jazz and blues in the evening! Mac's blues' theme restaurant doesn't miss a beat when it comes to American cuisine courtesy of fabulous Northwest ingredients and inspiration. I stepped into Mac's one evening when my friend's band had booked a gig upstairs. I needed a few minutes to get ready to listen to some really screechin' noise acts. The place was almost empty, and the feel is really laid-back. A good bit of Knob Creek from their big bottle was just the thing to get me ready to go upstairs to be yelled at (with massive microphone feedback!) The drink specials are great deals, but you can order whatever drink you'd like, and the Pesto Bread Bowl appetizer is probably what you should like to go with it. I was told to come back on a Thursday for sing-a-long night, so I brought my friends down to celebrate my birthday there. That was a good call--We sang along to some 90's songs we kinda knew, had a bunch of drinks and fun. Next time, I'm going to stay later, because we had to move on just as it seemed everybody was getting drunk enough to start singing dirty/embarrassing things. I really wanted to like this place, but it proved impossible. We ordered food and a drink. The drink service was a bit slow, but two hours later the kitchen had not even started our order. We only saw the waitresses one more time for another slow drink service. Finally we decided to settle up and leave, with no sign of food, and were treated with a serious attitude - of the customer is always wrong - by a manager no less. Mac's is amazing! The food is great, often organic and locally sourced. The people are friendly and the service is excellent! It is also terrific how Mac's showcases the local musical talent! What an awesome place to dance, laugh and just be yourself. The Tuesday Blues Jam is really rocking! It is the best kept secret in Eugene! My only wish is that they still had their wonderful chicken piccata on their menu as it was my favorite dish in town!
