I have come to dislike this branch of the Euphorium emporium. Why? For one: I hate the hords of Yuppie-Mummies that push their buggies through to the room beyond the little court-yard and that simply forget to close the doors even in the freezing cold of winter! Second: a couple of baristas here at this particular brand are rather snobbish and unfriendly...to the point of almost being rude. Third: they seem to hate people who want to use their café as a mobile office; they don't provide outlets - or - they don't allow you to use the existing outlet. I get it, you don't want people to occupy your tables for hours without consuming anything, but there's ways to compromise, aren't there? Don't they get that us mobile workers are the future?! However, there is still one thing about Euphorium bakeries that is worth pointing out and which is the reason why I still come here: their bread. In fact, their Scandinavian bread as well as their 100% rye bread are the best bread I've come across in London so far...only these days I don't combine my visit with a cup of coffee anymore as I neither feel welcome nor comfortable here. read more

Was at the HSBC in Islington today--asked the banker if there was a good place around to get a nice croissant. She said go to Euphorium, but to make sure you only bring cash. Because otherwise you'll want to buy everything you see. I noticed the food items in the glass cases are arranged in a specific progression... the first case you see at the entrance is practical and savoury (sandwiches, pizzas, quiches) then when you get towards the cash register it is downright dirty and sinful. They were giving out free samples of blueberry clafoutis, which I can only describe as these baked custardy fruit things. I am not going to lie. I totally snuck my little hand in the basket for an second sample. In the end the boyfriend got a mushroom egg savoury brioche and I got an almond croissant. We ate at the park across the street and the almond croissant was one of the messiest things I've eaten in awhile. Powdered sugar and crumbs everywhere, and as you can imagine the pigeons were just as happy as we were. read more

From outside it looks like a simple bakery but at the back, there is a patio with a cosy atmosphere, comfortable sofas and a huge gold mirror when you can admire yourself and people around. Pizzas aren't italian but they are yummy if you like vegetarian food. The cheesecake is really nice at £3 and you can choose among peer, lemon, strawberry or blueberry. Blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaa... I woke up this morning spitting piss and vinegar. Perhaps it was the cacophony of birds outside my window singing death eulogies at 4am. Or perhaps it was the rubbish-man orchestra clambering down my street at ungodly hours. Anyway, I knew I needed an attitude adjustment: it was just after 5am and I'd hate to suffer the next 15 hours before I get another chance at a day. Coffee. Carbs. Immediately. (What? Me? Emotional Eater?) It didn't start off well. -First, they don't open until 7:30am. I was willing to wait... I figured a "first to review" would be a nice treat to myself. (nevermind the loaf of bread I was bound to consume...) -I popped by again an hour and a half later, and this time I wasn't willing to wait any longer. I certainly wasn't willing for them to clearly ignore me in front of the register. I nearly walked out, but my desire was deep. -My coffee was only £1.90 which was grand, but giving them a £20 and then getting 18 one-pound coins as change? NOT OK. I walked out cursing the world, and the birds, and the rubbish men, and the... wait.. what's this? A-friggin-mazing latte. Smooth and strong with just the right amount of punch and without any trace of bitterness. I would have questioned if the milk was skim considering how gloriously it coated the inside of my tummy, but I watched her pour it myself! My day has been absolutely fantastic since 7:41am. When Danny Bear first opened this in the early 2000s, it was the best cafe and bakery on Upper St. He was so proud of the place and that pride showed in every pastry and coffee serves. The cherry danishes were to die for, a buttery-cherry crunchy but melt in the mouth experience. Then he sold it to Tesco, the pastries shrank to half their size, the coffee became bitter and pretty vile, and the always aloof service became just rude, sullen and incompetent. Apparently it got sold on again later, and you get the same 2nd rate pastries, coffee and service in all the branches. Nonetheless, it's there, it's got really nice decor, the pastries are OK if overpriced, and if you order a coffee that's mostly milk like a cappuccino or latte it will be OK. There're plenty of places to sit and tables to work at, and you won't get hassled as the staff are too lazy to bother. But don't expect it to be the 5* bakery & coffee shop it once was. read more

Among the best bakeries in London, this cafe gets rather busy on the weekends. Ever popular with the locals, there are queues even at the takeaway counter. The bread is quite expensive, but also worth the price tag. A good tip to know is that they sell all their specialty bread for half price after eight every evening, to make room for a fresh batch the next day. The counter has a large selection of pies, quiches, pizza slices, cakes and tarts on display. There is also a lovely courtyard in the back, which fills up quickly in sunny weather. The staff are really friendly, and people come from far and wide to sample the bread made here (the muesli bread is quite yummy with soup). Jamie Oliver is said to shop here as well. read more

I always used to treat myself to one of their baguettes on a Saturday morning. Although this place is expensive, this is easily one of the best bakeries in London. I got chatting to a member of staff here, and they said that they deal with some of the finest restaurants in London, which is hard not to believe from the sheer quality of produce. I have fond memories of the aptly titled Euphorium Bakery, having chilled here after taking my dissertation to be bound at nearby Collis Bird and Withey earlier this year. Typically Islington in an elegant, faux-European kind of way, Euphorium has a wonderful selection of pastries and cakes and serves good, if not extraordinary, coffee. I particularly like the courtyard area at the back of the cafe which can become busy but is lovely during the summer. A great way to avoid the hustle and bustle of Upper Street in a charming cafe with even more charming staff. Highly recommended. read more

This place has just the right mix of cocky attitude and assured confidence to justify the claim to the best bread in the universe. While I can't say I've sampled enough to bread to judge their claim, the smell alone is enough to put it up there with the best. The coffee as well is equally good and perhaps my favourite part is the atmosphere. It feels like a Parisian cafe and you can spend a couple hours there sipping a coffee without feeling rushed. Definitely a fan, great place to wait for people, and worth another visit. read more

I am sure this place is really good. The décor is nice, contemporary, there is ample seating, and the selection of baked goods is wonderful. So why am I not singing Euphorium Bakery's praises. Well...! I decided to order the ham pizza slice, warmed and to go. At £2.60 a slice it is pretty reasonable, not great but reasonable. Once the pizza announced its readiness to be devoured by me it was removed from the oven and placed in a bag. A bag? Pizza - in - a - bag? I left the posh bakery ready to eat. Gleefully I reached into the bag to extract my handful of goodness and pulled it out. I had to watch in despair as all my topping slid off the pizza onto the pavement. '#@.. *$$!' Several expletives later I resigned myself to eating the warm flat bread with tomato residue and two cold chunks of onion that remained. The pizza episode obviously tainted my experience but I won't let that cloud my judgement. I will certainly go back and stay for lunch as it does have a nice relaxed vibe. This place is very overpriced. The staff are friendly enough and the coffee is good, but I can't get over the price of their sausage rolls to be honest... They aren't horrible, but once they have been "warmed up" (presumably in the microwave) the pastry goes all soggy. **Update After two serious disappointments recently, I had to knock off a star. Disappointment #1: baguette with strange fibrous hair-like things popping out of both ends (what?!?), and disappointment #2: a sand-dry brownie that obviously hadn't been baked that day. Am definitely approaching the apprehensive phase with this one... How can I complain about a bakery that's across the street from my flat? Well, I can only do it a little bit, because for an all-around bakery, this is the best I've found in London. I shopped around for artisan bread in the area, and for price and quality, euphorium takes the...bread. I really wish they had a larger selection though. Maybe something like a pain de levain? something a little hearty with a crisp outside but not made with sourdough? picky, i know. Anyway, try it out. I'll be trying it out multiple times a week for a long time. Here are my particulars so far: Scones - 5 stars Bread selection - 3 stars Paysan loaf - 4 stars Blueberry cheesecake - 3 stars brownie - 5 stars ciabatta roll - 5 stars (seriously makes a heavenly panini) Campagrain - I have found my bread! Hearty, but not in an obnoxious seedy way, flavorful, and can hold all the goodness I like to load on top of it. These guys get five stars just for the cake they baked for the my birthday party. The huge slab of chocolate goodness was (and this isn't hyperbole, it's the truth) one of the best cakes I've ever eaten. I often visit Euphorium to sit quietly, enjoy a really good cup of coffee and devour one of their many yummy pastries or cakes. Speaking of cakes, I strongly recommend their Chocolate Marquis! I ordered one for a party and it was extremely devilish, it is the perfect pudding for all chocoholics. Not too bitter and not too sweet, the chocolate swirls just melt in your mouth. Their recently opened shop opposite the green nearer Angel looks beautiful and I am loving it. With a huge variety of breads and pastry goodies on show, with the smell of freshly baked bread wafting out the door it's extremely inviting. The décor is fab and on trend, I especially love the Wheat pattern that flows up onto the ceiling. Very cozy and I am looking forward to a winter Hot Chocolate in front of the fire place in one of their old leather chairs. Euphorium is a quaint bakery which just springs out at you after walking through Chapel Market. It's rated one of the best bakeries in London by Time Out. Hence, I felt I could not possibly walk by it without trying something. The selection of breads is not bad, and tends towards the Mediterranean. I only tried one item of confectionary - the chocolate tart - and man, was it delicious. It was just rich enough and had a sprinkling of cocoa powder on top, which caused me to cough once I took my first bite. Service was good, the atmosphere was cosy and to top things off, there are samples of the different items on offer so that you can try before you buy. Euphorium is so good they have two shops in one road! I recently came here for a coffee to perk up after a long walk and just couldn't resist a slice of lemon cake temptingly displayed on the counter. Unfortunately the latter was a bit dry, hence the four stars. The coffee was excellent, though, as was the tomato and herb focaccia I bought to take home. Wish we had a branch in Notting Hill as everything looked delicious and deliciously different from some of the more generic bakeries. read more

Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination. At least that's what the napkin I got from here says. The outside of this shop is rather uninspiring. Once you are inside though, it's time for your mouth to start watering. In fact I have only the vaguest impression of the seating areas: polished metal chairs, quite airy, low music, quite full even mid afternoon on a very glum day. What caught my attentions was the service counter. A range of 'artisan' breads fill the end by the door. Further in you get plain slices of cake, then fancy cakes (including some chocolate creations, complete with chocolate flowers, that look quite incredible), and then savouries. Along the way there are individual cheesecakes and tarts with juicy fruit gleaming on the top, and slices of pizza loaded with rich looking ingredients. In the end I went for a take out of one of the cheapest options: a blueberry clafouti. It reminded me of bread pudding, but apparently (I've just looked up a recipe), it's not anyway it was gorgeous. Solid and moist without being soggy, not too sweet, the fruit layer sharp, the dusting of icing sugar adding a hint of texture like footsteps in fresh powder snow. Prices are not cheap, with many small cakes and savouries being £3 or more. But actually for the quality on show here that seems like a bargain. Service was another thing I was too distracted to really notice but no problems so I think it was good! Great place for a coffee date to impress or a treat for yourself. read more

Clearly one of the best bakeries in London and about the only place I know in North-East London to get decent bread outside the market. Lovely eastern-european staff and apparently nice to dine as well (so far only bought bread there). Pastry is exceptionally good and there are good offers after 7pm for bread. Came to the Euphorium bakery for a working session. The coffee was good and my slice of carrot cake lovely, although all baked goodies looked very tempting! The space was luminous with big tables and nice service. I feel the internet connection could be slightly improved on however. read more

Absolutely adore the location right off of Islington Green. My husband and I go every Saturday morning for the most delicious coffee and baked goods. It's a nice weekend reprieve -- coffee is well made, bakery is good and the decor is cozy. My only wish is that they would have more options for breakfast; they tend to only have croissants and it would be nice to enjoy a muffin or something similar. read more

It ain't cheap, £1.40 for an Almond Croissant, but it's so good I think it's worth the extra pennies for an occasional treat. My local bakery is cheap but you can't even begin to compare it with Euphorium bakey. Doubling up as a café you can grab a coffee and a croissant, or if you're after something savoury try the Spinach & smoked salmon brioche (£2). Almost everything sold at the café is made in the bakery, and they also provide pastries for various restaurants & cafes so you know you're eating something good. Friendly staff and good food. I am a true sucker for sitting outside so if the opportunity is offered I will take it! The best thing about this place is the sitting outside, 'watching the world go by seeing who's who flitting up and down Upper Street. Much as there is no getting away from the classy presentation of the food, there is really something very meh about this place. I had the beef and watercress sandwich. The beef was very tough and cut really thick it nearly ripped my teeth out. I have eaten other things here before like pastries or cakes and although they look fantastic , on eating they miss the mark. Also slightly alarmed to see them only get 1* for Food Hygiene inspection, which is really not great at all. Its also fairly expensive in my view hitting around £7.00 for a small sandwich and coffee. There are many places to eat on Upper street, I doubt Ill visit again unless I need to sit outside, then it will be coffee only and food elsewhere. read more

This is a lovely little bakery, one that in the past I've spent many an hour in, watching the world go by. Superb bread and tasty sandwiches, but the best (and naughtiest) things here are their bags of freshly made chocolate chip cookies. Yum yum yum. Still warm when you get them. Charming bakery located on the cusp of the trendy end of Upper Street. Delicious cakes, pastries and breads mean that you cant go wrong popping in here! The croissants are buttery, crumbly and very tasty - highly recommended. The atmosphere is relaxed with a slight French feel to it. We walked past today and thought mmm, the cakes looked nice so we went in. A customer was already being served so we waited. We were still waiting when a couple came in after us, then a second assistant appeared but served them straightaway. "Fair enough" I thought, "maybe the assistant thinks we are with the first customer" and continued to wait. Then a third customer came in and was again served immediately, so I said "Excuse me, I'm sorry but actually we are next in line" The assistant replied "Oh, let me get someone else to help you" and continued to take the third customer's order. I went in today to get a cake as a treat to take out, first of all the server skipped me and served the man behind me- fine I wasn't in a hurry so wasn't going to make a point. Then a server who had been on the floor cleaning under the sink opposite came to the counter to serve, and I asked if he could wash his hand before he served me, he then asked me WHY- I said that he's been on the floor cleaning under the sink- I thought hygiene certificates were mandatory for food establishment even if common sense isn't!!- he then said 'That's why we have tongs' anyway he proceeded to wash his hands with Jif and make a song and dance about it- such attitude from a cocky teenager- anyway another server intervened and served me.
