We wanted a comfortable powerful sedan for our trip around Switzerland. When we arrived at the SIXT agency in Basel, we were given an old POS Mercedes diesel station wagon, a C200 I think. I told the agents that we had reserved an Audi. They said that they were only required to rent us an Audi or something "similar", and that the MBZ diesel wagon was "similar". We had just gotten off a Vikings river cruise (Excellent BTW) and had no transportation. We were stuck with the MBZ. That was bad enough, but we were ripped off at the return of the car. We were charged 100 euros for dropping it off at the Sixt agency on the "wrong" side of the airport. No one ever told us that there were two sides, or that we were at the "wrong" side. We were charged for filling the tank. Forty gallons - yes, more than the tank in that little MBZ would hold. These charges were added to our credit card after we returned to the USA. I tried several times to talk to someone who could review the situation. No one would/could intervene or assist. No recourse. Sixt must be the worst car rental company we have ever hired. Horrible.

After renting on three separate occasions at the airport avis location the summer of 2014, I can…read moresafely say this is the most unhelpful, boorish, characterless car rental agency I have ever had the need to use. it will be fine if you are okay with showing up and taking whatever econobox they offer, but if you're paying upwards of $100 US per day, it shouldn't be impossible to chose a car you actually want to drive out of the available cars they offer! unlike the US, i love that europe still regularly features manual transmissions (in fact, an automatic transmission in many cases will cost you more!), so i was excited about renting a car in switzerland.

Not only did we encounter great…read moredifficulty when we got to the counter because they could not find our reservation, but we continued to get charges from them on our credit card after we returned home. They claim the charges were for violations. However, we received a letter from SIXT in the mail 14 months after the rental date, in French, asking us to pay a 25 Euro charge for some traffic violation. In addition to that, it stated that there was a late charge for the fee. How can there be a late charge when we never received the notice in the first place? We had to email them to ask them what it said. Their response was incomprehensible. There were no directions on how to pay the fee, just that it needed to be paid as soon as possible. We then received another letter in the mail, in French, stating that there was going to be an additional late fee. And still, no clear directions on how to pay it. When we emailed them to ask them how to pay it, their response was unclear. It turned out that they were sending us a URL, but it was not stated clearly what it was. This was their response "In order to pay these invoices, please use the invoice number as payment reference and settle the payment as soon as possible, using the following information: IBAN FR14 3000 2007 0300 0000 0047 V96, BIC/Adresse SWIFT: CRL YFRPP." That was it. No other information. There was no explanation that part of this was an internet site that makes transfers (and charges an extra fee for it) or that the first information was some sort of bank number. We figured it out by copying and pasting those numbers in a google search. If you don't speak French fluently, we suggest that you don't rent from this company. Poor, poor customer service.
