From the moment we walked into Waterstone we knew we were in a special place. The staff are beyond wonderful! Kind and helpful- they went above and beyond. My aunt selected Waterstone at the Circle and the staff made the job of moving in so much easier!!! Any issue, they were there to help. They helped with hanging all the art and with understanding appliances and getting rides to appointments scheduled. The food is better than most restaurants! And the servers are all helpful. I must say that I feel very good about my aunt moving to a place where the entire team is so caring!

This is a long review but hope that it will provide some balanced info as you consider your…read moreoptions. Our loved one was a long-time resident of Goddard House (GH). They entered as an alert and mobile resident. GH promises "you can age in place" but our loved one was forced out as they required more care in spite of the fact that fellow residents were wheel chair restricted and required all sorts of care. Our family was willing to provide 24/7 private care but still we were told we had to leave. GH is a non-profit with volunteer board that is supposed to oversee the organization. There are no terms of office for these trustees; they serve year after year, including the board chair who hired a for-profit management company, SLR which brought tensions. SLR yanked long-standing, resident-focused policies such as financial rent assistance if family paid in full for three years. Policy is gone. However, the board chair requested the admission of at least one resident with full financial assistance at the outset because this person was a friend of hers. There were four changes of Executive Director in the time we were there and at least as much as head chef in the kitchen and head of resident care/nursing. I do not believe there is an R.N. on staff. The facility is outdated. Several bathroom resident falls occurred due to outdated bathroom design. Apartment bathrooms are being updated now as residents vacate but it does not help families whose loved ones fell. Additionally, carpets on 2nd and 3rd floors are original to construction! Yet, the board sits on a hefty quasi-endowment and does nothing. Lastly, the organization was slow to respond to a gastrointestinal virus that initiated in their kitchen and spread throughout the community. Goddard is terrific for a resident who is independent, mobile and requires little care. Brookline is a great location because of its proximity to academic medicine, but if your loved one requires additional care as they age, you may need to leave GH or you might be one of the fortunate ones to be allowed to stay.

When I brought blatant problems to the executive team's attention, I was listened to and then nothing changed. Staff members seemed to prefer doing laundry or hanging out with each other to being with the residents. I also found staff chatting on their cell phones and ignoring the resident's needs. When I directly requested help for my spouse I was told that they would get to it later, or I was treated in a rude and surly manner and my request was grudgingly granted. Buyer beware! What is advertised and what is given are vastly different. Do your homework before sending a person who cannot advocate for him/herself to a place where they are treated as a source of income, not as a needy human being who deserves compassionate, kind and thoughtful care.

When my mother was no longer able to live on her own in Florida due to cognitive decline from Alzheimers/dementia, Sue Lewin worked with me to find placement in a wonderful long term care facility specializing in memory care here in Massachusetts. Sue Lewin, her business partner Esther Rothkopf, and the rest of the Generations team did a wonderful job for my mother. As care managers, they partnered with me in advocacy, as well as providing great emotional support for both my mother and me during many difficult times (and believe me, in the beginning, tears were not unusual!). I could rely on them to attend (either with me or in my place) the quarterly Care Plan Meetings at the facility, keeping detailed records and asking many of the important questions regarding day-to-day care and medications that I didn't think to ask. Since I work full time, Sue and her team also made regular visits when I could not, and would send updates and observations regarding my mother's health and wellbeing. They also served as an invaluable liaison, with the ability during the day to approach nursing staff, the nurse practitioner, the social worker, etc... to ask questions or voice any concerns that I might have. In addition, they would purchase and bring over things that my mother might need when I could not. Whether days or evenings, weekdays or weekends, Sue and Esther were just a phone call, text or email away. My mother recently passed away at the end of November at the age of 88, and in her final 4 1/2 years she was able to maintain a much better quality of life, living closer to family in a safe, comfortable and stimulating environment, and for that I am deeply grateful to Generations: All About Elders.

The staff is untrained, rude and unprofessional, the rooms are not kept clean and most of all there was no one to oversee or to administer the place. These untrained staff who seem overworked run the entire place. The only people who did a decent job were the PT folks, and it is obvious that they do their job despite the very unstructured and confused environment. An anecdote: The first day I went to visit my husband a staff woman was by the front door (seems waiting to be picked up) and since it was a snowy day and with bad leg, I needed to use the handrails to go up the steep stairs. I asked her politely if she could move from the rail. She called me names and screamed at me. Shaken by this encounter, when I got buzzed in at the front door, I asked the front desk woman to let me know the name of this woman at door, as I would like to file a complaint'. After, describing the incident, the front desk woman deliberately took her time to come around her desk towards the door. By then the woman who was watching through the glass door jumped into the car that was picking her up and left. I asked the front desk woman, 'do you know her and I believe she works here.' She pretended she did not. It was obvious to me that she was not telling the truth. That was the first day experience in that place. My husband stayed more than a month there. It was a nighmare experience, but we had no choices then as we could not get another facility soon enough. Almost everyday, walking down the corridors you hear loud and consistent screams from patients. It is like a house of horrors. The roommate was also screaming continuoously and the staff sits and just talk to themselves. I asked to see a doctor or nurse (anybody in charge) and they kept saying they'll come. I had three appointments and no one showed up. When asked, they say we have no control as to when they come, or they come and spend an hour and leave. Finally, one said they don't come at all. He never saw a doctor or a nurse, the entire time. Eventually we left. I plan to do a followup on this place to the town of Brookline. It is disgraceful to have a place like this operate anywhere, let along in this town. It deals callously with vulnerable elderly population. Someone who knows the place, said the place is like a homeless shelter or a flop house. That is unaccepable for any organization. No matter what. do not put your loved one into this place. It is uncaring with some mean spirited workers in there.
