Crawfish at my feet while fishing for trout. Very clear water!

I've been here twice in two weeks to fish. It's a great park. It's rugged and challenging at times but that is what nature is about. If you want marked paths, signage and no dirt in your espadrilles, then I would suggest visiting a city park that is paved over 80% of the area. There's a park for every outdoor enthusiast. If you want a real park feel with challenging trails, this is the place!

Searching for a new spot to shoot photos in a natural setting, I found a green blob on Google Maps named Evansburg State Park, just ten miles or so down Germantown Pike. I ventured in last week to do some exploring, and to enjoy some peace and quiet for a day. First of all, almost nobody was there. I drove in and parked in a real nook of a corner, and was slow to get out of the car. An SUV quickly came in after me and circled around in a roundabout to head back the way it came - through the window, it seemed to be a park ranger or something. I waved, he waved back, and I guess he was making sure I wasn't some punk kid lugging a case of beer into the woods or something. I found a trailhead immediately and walked to the right, guided along the path by a series of dots spraypainted on nearby trees. This part got confusing, as there are numerous trails and they seemed to intersect with each other at numerous points. Needless to say, I got pretty lost for a while, but never really cared because that was sort of my intention. I had no problem getting around physically, but a few obstacles along the trails might cause problems for less agile hikers than myself. One trail followed along the Skippack Creek, leading me through the woods and to an open field with a horse trail along the rim. I saw signs in various portions of the park indicating where hunting was allowed. There was also a nature center, a camping area, a picnic area, four softball fields, and the creek for fishing, none of which I utilized but it's good to know they're there. This is a beautiful walk through the woods, and I'd suggest it to any lover of the outdoors.

For close to 20 years now, I've been hiking, exploring, and photographing Evansburg State Park. This beautiful park , full of woods, hills, fields and streams, has over 3000 acres to explore! It may be more rugged (no paved trails) than Valley Forge, or Ridley Creek State Park, but its also much less crowded. The Park is split in two (north to south) by Skippack creek and some of the trails run through the flood plane of the creek and can be very muddy after heavy rains or wet times of the year. If you don't like mud, plan to visit during dryer times or hike the trails on the east side of the creek which tend to be higher and dryer. There is extensive horseback riding throughout the park and many of the trails are dually used by horses and hikers alike. Horses are large animals and can tear up a trail fast especially when its wet. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes and expect to get dirty! Hunting is allowed through much of the park during the Fall and Winter seasons. Its best to hike on Sundays during this time of year because there is no hunting allowed on Sundays in Pennsylvania. One more thing to beware of : I have never been to any park that has as much poison ivy as Evansburg! In Summer time its just about everywhere! Always stay on the trail and wear long pants if possible and please don't litter. I've pulled close to 50 bags of trash out of the park over the past 2 years and my back could use a break! The best times of the year to visit are: Late March and early April - Beautiful white wild flowers bloom along the Skippack creek trail. Mid October - The entire park lights up with color as the leaves change and Evansburg becomes one of the most beautiful spots in the county. Winter, after any snowstorm- Its so quite, serene and wonderful you may actually wish Winter never ends. Good luck and have fun, J. M.

If you want your small children to nap, then have them walk up the steps to the slides a dozen times. There is a nice variety of playground equipment for all ages including swings, a 3 person seesaw, spinning/ climbing thing, etc. All the equipment has a castle theme which is super cute. I love that the entire playground is fenced in with fences high enough that young kids definitely cannot get over. The fencing around the steps/ platforms for the slides is also super safe to prevent falls. I feel totally comfortable letting my kids walk up and slide down by themselves while I wait at the bottom. Bathrooms nearby are better than most playgrounds. The only downside is that there isn't a lot of shade. Some benches are shaded but none of the playground equipment is shaded so you feel like you're baking on a hot day. There are covered benches at the entrance of the playground for parents. But your kids will have so much fun that they'll barely notice how hot they are.

My favorite thing to do here is grab lunch and sit in the picnic area relaxing on my lunch hour. Can be hard to go back to work on a gorgeous day, but well worth it in my book! There is one "not recommended" review...I have no idea what this person is talking about, this park is VERY well maintained. Grass is cut, the place is clean and the park ranger is never far from sight.
