Husband and I both had sessions with Michelle. Being a massage therapist myself, you might think I'd want deep tissue. But actually, BECAUSE I'm a therapist I know one doesn't need deep pressure to have a great relaxing massage and pain reduction. We both requested light to medium pressure, and I requested extra focus on my low back. Michelle did an excellent job finding all the trouble spots and gently kneading them away. Lisa worked with me. Before we even started Lisa spent about 15 mins answering my questions about planter fasciitis. She explained different schools of thought and very objectively made recommendations. Lisa is a nurse and massage therapist which explained her objective, educated perspective which was just what I needed. I get about 5-6 massages a year for about 10 years now, and her massage was one of the best. She listened to my body and wasn't obsessively asking me if I was okay. She also didn't talk during the massage unless I asked a question. And even then she only answered the question and that made me very comfortable. At the very end she showed me the spot in my back where she thought the problems were coming from and I was thankful for her advice. The next day my pain level in my feet dropped drastically. I've been seeing massage therapists in my hometown and while traveling for over 10 years and this rates among one of the best. For 4 of the past 5 years, my husband's side of the family has traveled from Western New York and brings 30+ adults and kids to OBX. By the end of long days and late nights, and before another 12 hour ride home, I'm ready for a massage! This was the 3rd massage I booked in OBX and worlds above my other experiences. I've booked at The Sanderling and at a place in the Timbuktu shopping area of Duck. But there's a big difference between paying a hefty price for pampering vs true therapeutic massage, and Even Keel is THE place to go to get real value for truly individualized treatment. I scheduled a 90 minute deep tissue and 30 minutes of reflexology. Lisa started with the reflexology and was able to pinpoint my problem areas beyond what I'd explained in my consent form. She easily transitioned from the reflexology to the massage and her techniques were smooth with just the right amount of pressure. She adjusted the pressure for deeper knots and worked my entire body evenly in terms of time spent. She asked me a few questions through the massage, but they were for her to get the information she needed to give me the best treatment possible. I learned from Lisa that she's also got decades of nursing experience as an RN. Pairing her medical knowledge with how she initiates some of her techniques was also very helpful. She used what I think were tuning forks on some of the reflex points in my feet and at the end of my massage used vacuum cups to assist in releasing additional trigger points in my back. The cups were something I'd only heard about - we've all seen the red circle bruises in celebrity photos, right? - but using her medical knowledge, Lisa was able to integrate a holistic technique for the appropriate treatment, and I've thankfully got no crazy bruises to show for it! I really have only positive things to say about my experience. Lisa was kind, caring, polite and professional. My room was clean with the right amount of lighting. Checkout was a breeze and we had some nice small talk before I left. Most importantly, I walked out feeling exponentially better than I walked in. I look forward to my next visit! I was thoroughly impressed with Even Keel. Michelle, my massage therapist did an amazing job pinpointing exactly where I needed the most attention and applied he right amount of pressure to work out knots I have in my neck and back. She took two minutes or so at the beginning and asked some very specific questions about what I was hoping to get out of the massage and used that to hone in on my trouble spots. The only reason I didn't give the massage five stars because I felt it was a bit pricy for an hour massage, but I would definitely go back when I am down in the Outer Banks for vacation again. read more
