I recently had a massage bodywork session at OBX Bodyworker and it was one of the absolute best massage experiences I've ever had!!! Ashli's style is very unique and was extremely effective for me. In the session I was able to completely relax, slowdown, and truly connect with myself. Her work helped me unwind tension in a deep way-- allowing me to release and relieve not only physical pain, but also let go of leftover emotions, memories, and confusion that I didn't even realize were there. ATTN: Readers, my review is thorough. Kindly read its entirety. Ashli Marshall is definitely a healer. I didn't know anything about the nature of a fascia massage until I called out in desperation to book an appointment. Fascia massage is contrary to any other massage I've ever experienced. Ashli Marshall's hands heal at much deeper levels than the standard kneading style massages are able to achieve. This is because she is shifting and releasing tension using energy. The most healing occurs by gentleness. I know this now. In the midst of beginning to practice conscious breathing (pranayama) in between the two sessions I experienced with Ashli I began to see how energy shifts and releases in the body. Surely, conscious breathing in lieu of acupuncture helps one release tension throughout the body, however Ashli releases tension more efficiently in shorter time than even conscious breathing can do in my experience. By the second massage I experienced so much release in my chest and back tension, I almost felt brand new. I was extremely tense prior having used a foam roller and had several other massages in the past six years, none of which released tension as exponentially as the modality of Ashli. In the first few sessions you might feel nausea and a bit of dizziness from the body detoxifying which is a definite sign the body is healing. This nausea is experienced when someone is committed to a very proper detox for the body. When I felt this detox symptom after my first session I knew Ashli was a genuine healer unlike many others. If you have serious pain and tension don't waste your time elsewhere. I had six massages with a certified "medical" masseuse who didn't release my tension even close to the level I achieved via two sessions with Ashli. I've wasted good money here and there getting massages from people who didn't even know how to make the standard kneading massage feel good so it was a complete waste. I've also been to an atlas/upper cervical chiropractic for four months who didn't release next to near what Ashli has for me. Mind you this chiropractor doesn't share about using a foam roller daily, nor practices you may do at home to avoid expensive visits. Ashli's massages are healing and very gentle. They are not the normal kneading massage when the body thirsts to heal. They work at deep levels via energy release. Although a kneading massage feels very satisfying I have yet to find someone who can make it so. Instead I wanted to heal so I tried the fascia massage and I'm very glad I did. With a fascia massage by Ashli you don't need to think about paying for a massage and then paying in addition for acupuncture elsewhere, because her work releases in the same way acupuncture does and much better too. Further, I'd like to add, a true healer does not need to use needles to heal and release. A true healer is able to feel deeply and heal/release with their hands. I've had acupuncture before by the way, with needles and without. Years ago the healer, Daniela Webster, of Vista, California, helped me once without needles. She showed me what can be done. For someone who has done massage for 11 years and had a lot of treatments over the years, I can say Ashli is on it. She really tunes in to your body, finds what it needs. Her OBX style massage is completely different than anything Ive ever experienced. not a deep tissue, or muscle focused massage. What I experienced was a nervous system stimulating yet absolutely balancing and relaxing bodywork experience, gentle pressure that goes very deep. she uses light gentle strokes, some deeper (but not really deep) pressure strokes, connecting nerve strokes and energetic touch. She also was very intuitive about what my body was telling her...elbow pain ultimately caused by throat stuff, front of neck, which can also have to do with communication. She is in touch. If you are looking for a normal massage, this is NOT the place for you. Before the massage, I said that I prefer firmer pressure. She told me that she focuses on fascia and nerves and that her clients get really good results. The first five minutes on the massage table all she did was barely touch me with the tips of her fingers. I thought she was just getting warmed up, so I asked if she could use a little more pressure. She informed me that that was all she did for the duration of the massage. It was not relaxing at all. It was actually very, very weird. This is the first time in my life I have ever walked out of a massage, but it was truly that bad. I would never pay $79/hour plus tip for someone to barely touch my skin with the tips of their fingers. The reason I gave two stars is because the lady is very nice and the place is clean. Some people say that there's no such thing as a bad massage. I would say that there's nothing better than a GREAT massage - and that's what you'll get at OBX Bodyworker. First, don't let the location fool you! Art's Place (next door) may be a good place for a burger, a beer and some local music, but the spa next door is very deceiving from outside. It's large and luxurious inside. Ashli took the time to get to know me before my first massage, which I really appreciated. Ashli has done it again! When we decided to take another trip to OBX this year, I scheduled an appointment immediately. I will reiterate again - NOT your typical massage!!! As I was on the table, the term manipulation kept coming to mind. She is gifted in tapping into the energy flow of the body and manipulating the fascia and nerve networks to help facilitate it's own natural healing process. She gets me to a beautifully meditative state. It's so very different to what people may assume when you say "massage" because instead of working the superficial layers of muscle, she's working within the systems that help connect the physical with the mental/emotional. She's helping to re-write the malfunctioning connections that linger well after any injury/trauma has healed from a technical standpoint. Your body remembers everything and all of the systems within it are connected, constantly communicating with each other. Working with the fascia and nerves is absolutely necessary in terms of fully healing all systems of the body. Keep an open mind and let yourself relax. Bottom line - Her advertising and explanation of the "massage" and "bodywork" needs to change to be more accurate. She should be labeled as "non traditional" and I recommend that people be well aware what the "process" truly is. It is NOT a massage but a series of tapping. Perhaps "therapeutic taps targeting pressure points" would be more accurate? The site explains that she specializes in "deep tissue and Swedish massage" among other things, but that is not what you get when you go for a "bodyworks" session. She barely touches you and there doesn't even seem to be much of a point to fully disrobe at all for this. After I did research of this after I left, I feel more disappointed in what I received. My friend who knows how badly I needed my kinks worked out, how bad I hurt on a daily basis, and how I rarely ever do for myself so I am not one to buy myself a massage, bought this for ME on HIS birthday and he was disappointed to learn that I left just as sore as when I went in there. My leg was spasming the last 15 minutes or so after she worked on my ankles. (One area I mentioned was a problem area.) This wasn't addressed at all. In fact, after the spasms started she moved back up to my head and shoulders. I can't say I understand what happened there. I mentioned my knees where a problem area but my legs weren't tapped or touched at all, just my ankles. I have Complex-PTSD (noted on my form prior to session) so understanding and knowing beforehand how I will be touched and knowing a full disrobe or a disrobe at all was completely unnecessary would have been helpful. I felt a bit embarrassed by that. I would have loved to say it worked for me, but that was not the case. I gave it one star because she is a pleasant person and it was relaxing, but it loses four stars because of incorrect advertising, vague explanation prior to the session, and I don't feel like I received the relief that was advertised by any means. After explaining all of my body issues and saying things like, "You will feel this and that" she didn't take that opportunity to explain that she wouldn't feel those things at all during the process... I use the word "process" because it's not a traditional massage and it was not "bodyworks" by any definition I found. I even looked up other specialties listed on her site to compare and nothing matched what she did. My LMT friends even think she's being deceitful. I hope that's not the case. Nonetheless, my friend is out $99 for the special package and I'm left in the same condition, only a bit embarrassed and disappointed. I hope the owner updates her site and even having a short demo video would be helpful. Even a site in the U.K. of another girl who does bodywork shows pictures of her using pressure points. These techniques were not used during my session. There was also no discussion during the entire session which seems to be a very key factor in bodywork. read more
