I am extremely unhappy with my experience at Fortis Institute. The staff and teachers are…read moreincredibly unprofessional and unhelpful. From day one, I felt abandoned and left to figure things out entirely on my own. The staff and teachers simply do not do their jobs, failing to provide any meaningful assistance or support to students. The expectation here is that you handle everything by yourself, which is incredibly frustrating and not conducive to learning. I've learned next to nothing during my time at Fortis Institute because the teachers do not engage or assist in any meaningful way. I cannot emphasize enough how disappointed I am with this school. I would never recommend Fortis Institute to anyone. Save your time and money and look for a better institution that actually cares about its students' education and success.

Old school" instructor setting students up for failure…read more Doesn't care about what's best for the students, only cares what makes her job easier. Very unfair and inconsiderate when it comes to students. She's been here for years so I assume my complaints won't be acknowledged, I'm sure I am not the first person to complain about her. Fortis need to do better and hire people who care about their students and aren't using their position unethically. She has made me very discouraged, and I am considering dropping out and finding another school. I haven't had any other problems with any other instructors other than her. My whole class complains amongst ourselves but no one wants to complain to the school. But I do not care, I took a loan out and I'm not getting the education I'm paying for. She doesn't follow the lesson plans that are in our modules, so we are unprepared for assignments. I think I'm going to have to drop out and go to another school because this woman is on a power trip.

Former Graduate Welding and Pipefitting. I wish I could…read moregive a 5 but however it's severely lacking and very high debt. Due to unused tools/gear we've never used before such as Feeler Gauge, Dark tinted safety Glasses only used for oxyacetylene torch, file w/ hand attachment, measuring tape only for pipefitting or other measurements needed, laptop for online class which I can do on my phone unless for those don't have functional phone, Oculus Meta Quest 2 very useless and not very functional application for welding, welding caps that can or can't fit on some people's heads, All of those are unnecessary tools/equipment provided to be in the toolbox. Class work wise, somewhat decently satisfying however instructors can be very critical/difficult to work with, but if you're lucky enough you can get close to them for extra help by keep them on track with you cause they're the type of person who WILL teach if you show your work, keep in touch with them, and show up make sure they know you're there! When it comes to online, honestly it shouldn't be a thing, I'd rather be in a classroom than behind the screen why? Me and other students don't pay attention because of how boring it is and there can be some technical difficulties. In person is more to get the feel, I remember majority of online it's never been about how to do it's more what to expect. Never taught how to read blueprints, know your amperage, know your metals/alloy, know your machine settings and etc. You're better off being a welder helper or work in a fabrication companies that has actual training or maybe shipyard or any low-no experience. Just make sure to past your weld test! Debt is high due to unnecessary tools provided and working with not just 1 government funding there's multiple. So be careful if you want to join extra program like Pipefitting. To be honest in Pipefitting class, that giant textbook is a waste! But rest of the stuff like hard hats, Pipe-fitter blue book, measuring tape (NEEDED) , and magnetic bubble level. In Pipefitting class, it feels a lot more worth it why? You can finally learn how to read and make blueprints, read a tape measure if you don't know how to read, and understanding how fitting a pipe. But note it requires a lot of math, physics, and precision. This program lasts for about 2-3 months which is somewhat 9 and half months total. So far, everything is pretty good back then but when I went back once more for a brush up things changed, and not gonna lie not in a good way. School wants to hire more staff/instructors, machines getting messed up, people stealing tools from others like usual cause it's literally located in the Ghetto of Houston. So better have your big boy pants on! So the debt and costs is due to school adding random stuff to cough up, under paid staff/instructors, not much parking space especially for big and long vehicles, expensive vending machines used to buy a sandwich for $2 then it went up to $6 also not functional 50/50 chance, restrooms upstairs is somewhat good, but downstairs not very maintained, so all in all make sure you only signup for ONE student aid and choose other program IF you have enough to pay off. RSI staff job leads? Better off finding on your own why? Because they will have less pay and some go farther out of Texas. They can send you this and send you that, trust me you'll get barely ANY response. They may or may not sign you up for OSHA-10 card so keep an out. And a quick tip apply for TWIC card, trust me it's a best eye looker for almost any jobs. Females beware of males, though I'm a guy myself I do have to say it. Be careful who you talk to. Anyways! School is good just expensive, if you got into any trouble with personal issues talk with Bob or anyone in charge hopefully they'll help you out. If you have to miss class they could potentially waver your monthly payments, remember instructors don't teach cause you're not worthy so make yourself standout, tuition/financial aid gotta make sure you know what you're getting yourself into and be sure to have enough! Expect machines not working, including vending machines, and beveling machines not working. Watch videos from certified welders not YesWelder or Western Welding Academy even weird Chinese or Russian welding techniques. And do not pay at the supply shop they'll make you pay more than you supposed to. And be sure no one steals your stuff!
