Recenty however while I was ordering from a neighbouring take-out restaurant, I walked past and gasped in horror as I saw two of the staff seated at a small table in sweat pants and thongs, filling spring roll wrappers from a mountain of vegetables in front of them. They were sweating (and yes, the sweat was dripping into said mountain of vegetables) and one of them picked her ear (for what seemed to be forever), then casually continued to construct the spring rolls. The decor is much nicer than most of the suburban Thai places I've been to. A bit more modern and fresh, maybe. There are comfy banquettes to sit on, and the menus have pretty carved timber covers. I always order the jungle curry. Unlike a lot of curries, the jungle curry contains no cream or milk so it's very refreshing and light. They also do a mean vegetarian Tom Yum here at Siam Square (and I haven't been able to find anywhere else that will do that). The service is always attentive and efficient and there a lots of little touches about this place that make it special. The elephant statues, the way your rice comes out in the shape of a love heart, the crisp air-conditioning. All the little simple things that make a meal so much nicer, and that a lot of suburban takeaways forget about, come together at Siam Square Thai. You can BYO wine, and they are also licensed. The prices are standard for thai food, but the food itself is of a much higher standard than a lot of the other Thai places around Brisbane. Siam Square is a niche in Thai restaurants with its more contemporary style and dishes that offer more variety than typical Australian Thai fare. Remember, jungle curry!

Siam Square does traditional Thai cuisine perfectly, but their stand out for me is their Roast Duck Salad, which comes served with a giant portion of fresh vegetables, warm duck, and a spattering of home made dressing and lychees. Take away is also a popular option and you'll often see diners in their jogging gear waiting outside for their meals.

True story. So being fans of the Thai cuisine, I was out to search for a mean Pad Thai, my weakness. Always with chicken. Amazing Thai sits perfectly on the corner of Samford and Gaythorne road. The owner is this cute little Thai lady who really does do everything. There are a few wait staff sometimes, but the shop isn't that big and they can get away with just 1 or 2 extras on busy nights. The Money Bags in this place was my first experience. The water chestnuts, the minced chicken meat, the crunchy fresh ingredients wow. Then we had the Pad Thai, a Green Curry with Chicken and a Beef Stirfry. There is a difference between throwing things into a mess together and frying them at a high heat to throwing the ingredients at the right times to make the perfect flavour and combination. Amazing Thai do serve amazing food. The food tastes fresh, tastes quality and tastes like Thailand. I was furious. They then called back and told me that it was because the shop was 'closing early and their earlier statement had been wrong'. I am apparently getting my money refunded but according to them it will take 2-3 days at the very least. Due to my illness I have set times that I need to eat and set times that I have people available to help me get to and from places to get what I need. I was careful to order so there was plenty of time for them to be able to get my food to me in time, usually they take 30 minutes, which is amazing, but 45 minutes and then I am just told that there will be nothing? Now I am stuck at home, alone, incredibly bloody hungry without the right food to take my medication. Now even if I do find somewhere else to order from it's going to be a good hour before I end up with anything. Bad form guys, total and utter bad bloody form. There ain't much that's new about the New Chinese Garden Seafood Restaurant. I've been coming here…read moreon and off since the 90's and the menu, table layout and quality has remained pretty much frozen in time. Dining in the spacious enough restaurant has never been an issue - even on Christmas day for dinner - as I've never seen the place over half full. On top of that, most of the clientele are middle aged to elderly Aussies. Not a great sign for a Chinese restaurant. But don't let that fool you. Yes, the food is very mid ranged, mid priced, mid portioned, but it's consistent and that counts for a lot with me & my lovely but finicky fiance. The proprietor, Lee, juggles waiting on customers and working the wok in the kitchen as the place is usually dead. The "Wait staff and kitchen hand wanted." sign seems to be perpetually propped up on the counter as you walk in, but with that being said, Lee handles the customers with an understated smile and is a rather shy gentleman, but totally accessible for any questions you may have regarding the menu. More importantly, in the kitchen he turns out some pretty tasty dishes. Nothing life changing, or likely to make your top 3 list if you're a connoisseur of Asian cuisine but the basics, done damn well. The satay chicken skewers are stand outs (there's even a mixed satay skewer entree with beef, chicken and prawn skewers for the indecisive) but everything else is merely just good, and that's good enough for what you'll pay. Aside from obviously catering to the well known Aussie-Asian staples like Sweet & Sour Pork and a variety of fried rices (Hong Kong style and with crab meat sauce) there are a few less common gems to unearth like the delightful West Lake Beef Soup (a simple flavorful broth with minced beef and coriander). If anything lets the restaurant down from a culinary stand point, it's the sizzling/braised dishes. Don't get me wrong, they're most certainly edible and the meat is tender. But that's about as far as the praise goes. The main problem lies in the sauce. For my daring, explosion of flavor loving palette, I found the Chinese style and Mongolian sauces to be lacking some serious personality. Very bland and the most exciting part is hearing the sizzle as the meal makes the way to the table. But the dish it's self...meh. Go for the char kway teow (a delicious ho-fun noodle dish with that addictive fiery wok flavor) to remind yourself what Lee is capable of. For the experienced lover of Chinese food, nothing at New Chinese Garden Seafood Restaurant will bump off your tried and true favorites from the higher end establishments, but if you feel like a relaxing meal (dine in or take away, the quality remains good) without the elbow wrestling with your fellow diners that some of the busier places at Sunnybank can result in, visiting Lee and co. - well, usually just Lee - will fill your tummy and not break the bank. 3 3/4 Stars.

The best explanation for this is that everyone is that the majority of its business is usually comes during the lunchtime service. Today its packed and bustling with people in collars and ties. It's a far cry from the night service. Non-the less, the food that they make at Chinese New Garden is absolutely fantastic. You can feed two people with a couple of mains and a starter for and average of $30. I definitely would recommend the Lemon Chicken and any of the Omelettes. Usually, in the evening, you're looking at a 20 minutes wait until pick up. For the price you pay, the quality of food stands well above a lot of Chinese restaurants in the area.

While I'm not much of a salad person, I do enjoy a good salad once in a while, so I went for the chickpea pesto salad and the sesame BBQ. I got a small salad combo (5.5), and while the two salads got mixed up, I'm pretty sure the sesame BBQ was the one that was more flavorful and stood out. I couldn't really taste the pesto salad dressing, possibly because it pooled at the bottom, but the two mixed together wasn't bad! The ingredients taste fresh, and the service is pretty friendly and fast. My only complaint is that they don't have much seating, so be prepared to take-away!

Basically, you have your choice of whatever hot food, burgers, salads, or "bakes" (like lasagna, casseroles, etc) they have on rotation. Just pop up to the counter and see what they have in their display case. They also have a few dessert-y type things if you are so inclined. Everything is vegan. (I think some of their other locations have a few non-vegan options with dairy, so just ask to make sure.) Both times I went, I got a combo meal with a bunch of different curries and things like that. Your choice of brown or saffron rice is included. Their Thai curry with pumpkin is one of the best curries I've had in my life, although it's definitely sweet so just be aware if you don't like sweet things, but it's absolutely amazing. This place gets bonus points for being pretty inexpensive as well. A large combo will only set you back $10-12, depending on what you get (bakes vs. curries, etc.) and their burgers are only $8-9. The portion sizes are huge, almost a little too big for lunch, so you definitely get value for your money. The Post Office Square location is reallllllllly small, with no interior seating and only a smattering of tables and chairs outside. This is really a take-away place, and there's always a lunchtime queue. (Like almost everyone else, I got take-away both times.) This place is so good I'm almost glad I don't live in Brisbane because I would seriously spend my money eating at Vege Rama for lunch every day. Every. Single. Day. Go. Whether you're vegan or a devoted carnivore, you will not be disappointed by this place.
