But, a friend recommended Derksen Dentistry, and after some extensive (read: borderline obsessive) research, I decided to take the plunge. I needed an advanced root canal and figured, why not throw in a cleaning while I'm at it? The first thing that set the tone was my call to Susan. She was so calming and reassuring that I felt like I was calling a life coach, not a dentist's office. She promised me they'd make my visit as relaxing as possible, which is a tall order when you're about to face down a drill and some sharp objects in your mouth. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted (on time, too, which felt like an anomaly in itself). The assistant was super helpful, constantly checking in with me during the x-rays, which was nice since I was pretty sure my mouth was about to go on strike from all the poking. Then came Dr. Derksen. Now, I'm not the type to buy into "auras" or anything, but this guy had an aura of, "Hey, I've got this. You can relax." I felt it. He triple-checked to make sure I was completely numb before starting the root canal--because apparently, "feeling your teeth getting drilled" is not on anyone's bucket list. The whole process went smoothly, and to my surprise, I didn't leave feeling like I'd just fought a battle with a power tool. What really sealed the deal was that they followed up the next day to check on me. I mean, where else do you get a dentist who cares enough to make sure you're not secretly plotting your revenge on him for the trauma? Long story short, I walked out of Derksen Dentistry with all my teeth intact and a new, surprisingly positive outlook on dental visits. The staff attitudes/friendliness vary wildly from overly giddy to aloof to downright confrontational. After a few visits, we were sent an invitation to do an online survey, which I filled out. I graded them poorly in one area because I think it is odd/ridiculous that a service provider would only schedule followup appointments between 9 and noon, which is a time that 95% of their clients (kids) are unavailable (in school). I'm aware of many orthos in other areas that have early morning/evening/weekend appts, for these visits, which is much more customer friendly. A few days after the survey, we started getting calls from the office. Each time, we were not available to take the call. This led to a phone-tag thing that over a few weeks consisted of 10 calls. Since they don't have voicemail at the office, I asked someone to take a message. They refused. So I asked for an email address. They refused. So then I posted a note on their Facebook page, asking them to kindly stop calling. The calls ended. A few weeks later, my wife took the kid in for an adjustment. My wife was asked to come back to the treatment area, which was unusual. Once in the room with our daughter, one of their staffers verbally attacked my wife. "What's the deal with you posting on Facebook?!? " Etc. My wife was shocked and totally unaware of anything, since I had handled the survey and subsequent phone calls. Especially concerning was the fact that our daughter was in the room and completely embarrassed. After composing herself, my wife stopped the staffer's rant, returned to the front desk and asked to see the manager. Once sitting down with the practice manager, my wife explained the situation. The manager apologized profusely and said the staffer was inappropriate and would be reprimanded. The problem here is that with braces, you can't really just change providers mid-stream. So we are forced to maintain a relationship with this office, even though we all cringe at the thought of visiting this facility. My wife now refuses to step foot in the place. This week, we had a return visit for another adjustment. No problems this time.

Both practice in the office next door to the Red Cross and I must say that I haven't had better dentists. First of all, Scott is a hottie, and that is a perfectly fine reason to go see your dentist. :-) Above and beyond that, the hygenists are thorough and they give you tips about how you should take care of your teeth better (rather than just saying you need to brush or floss more) and they provide you with tools you may need to do that (i have these dental sticks that i absolutely hate) My dentist also takes care of bite issues, headache problems, and he gives a little temple massage during an examination that makes being in that God Awful chair just slightly more enjoyable. If you need a dentist, I highly recommend either Scott or his father Larry.
