I had the owner coming over for a free estimate and I decided to hire a different company to do the same work he recommended, for a significantly cheaper price. Red flags: - concerning selling techniques. Lean hard on fear and creating a bloated sense of urgency. I heard expressions like "you are in a big trouble my friend" or "you are going to lose your insurance" and of course "I have a crew here, I'll get them here tomorrow". The whole tone of the conversation was not professional and pushed to act as fast as I could. This accounts for 80% of the reason why I hired someone else. - knowledge: while the person continue to claim he was an expert, I was not able to see any signs of expertise. I actually heard a great deal of "I have no idea" on the few questions I was able to ask. He focused on triggering a fake sense of emergency while folks from other companies explained why the job was recommended by indicating the facts. I want to be clear on this point: I'm not saying this person is not knowledgeable, but he certainly did not show his knowledge during our conversation, so if you are planning to hire this company, I recommend checking this bit. - higher price compared with competitors: I interviewed 3 companies, this was the highest one, with a cost of about $300 more per tree. Also the other company did not need to use the crane. That alone saved a ton. - tricky ways to push you to do the job: while I have been very clear with the owner that I had to think before making a decision, just a few days later, the office called me to schedule the job, stressing that I had given verbal confirmation, so I had to book. I politely declined and explained I was not going to. They call again a few days after to try again... - badmouth the competition: always a bad sign when to build yourself you have to talk down others. Advices for folks looking for arborist: get at least 3 estimates, especially if you need to work on more than a tree. Don't fall for bad selling techniques. When pushed, take a moment to breath and focus on logic not induced fear. If a tree has been there for decades, it will likely give you some time to shop around for the best company to help you with. Finally, expect kindness and curtesy. read more

Claimed they did 5 hours on the 2nd day of work but it was really only 3 - they used the others hours by driving the big crane truck onto MY lawn (which cause significant damage) to work on my neighbor's tree - and of course, never even asked for permission to drive onto MY LAWN. Plus the workers think when they're on the roof one can't hear their sex talk but NOT TRUE. We heard every word until we called the office to complain about it! read more

We have a huge Valley Oak in our backyard that was well overdue for major maintenance, including significant trimming and shaping to redistribute load and reduce the nearly 75% that hung dangerously over the house. A large branch had broken off from the canopy on a particularly windy day in the summer, luckily landing in the mid-crown instead of on our roof! We called Mike out this fall to provide a quote and he remembered working on this special tree in the past, though it had been at least 10 years since work had last been done on it, well before we acquired the home. Because of its immense size, proximity to high voltage lines, and the tight corner it was tucked in with building structures on two sides, a team of climbers was required for the multi-day job. Shane and his crew of 3 to 4 guys was incredible, navigating tight spaces with precision and care as they transformed our beautiful oak, alleviating tons of weight and sheer forces to decrease the potential of serious and significant damage risk to our home, as well as help us sleep much easier. Shane provided great communication each day, and the guys left our roofs and yard cleaner than they found it. We are happy, satisfied, and grateful for Evergreen's amazing work! read more

We have several very tall trees (30-60 feet at least) (oak, liquid amber, black walnut, California pepper) that were in need of significant trimming and also had power and phone lines running through them. The owner Mike came to look at our home and gave some great suggestions and gave an estimate that day via email within an hour. Scheduling the service was easy, the office staff was very friendly and helpful. On the day of service, Julian and Beto's crews came out and finished this large job early and under the estimated price! They were nice, clean, and helpful! Evergreen is the only arborist in the area certified by PG&E to trim trees around power lines and they were incredibly careful and did a fantastic job. I rarely give yelp reviews, but I cannot state strongly enough how great Mike, Julian, and Beto have been. I would recommend them to anyone interested in having their trees evaluated and trimmed. This company is AWESOME! They were prompt, professional, and polite. Mike came out to give me an estimate that was lower than I expected. I called the office and spoke with the amazing Celia and she scheduled the appointment. The crew was so friendly...each one introduced himself, and I watched as they cleaned out as much debris as possible from my pool. We have 6 Pines trees that seemed to be dying. Called Evergreen. Mike the owner came the next day. He suggested that removing 3 feet of lower branches plus shape trees. He gave us a reasonable estimate. They will compost the branches and we will use as mulch. He gave me a reasonable estimate. The job was completed the next day. The workers, Johnny and Aaron, were very professional. They informed us that they encountered bees and a hornets nest. They showed us where the nest was located for our safety. They piled the compost where we wanted it located. We are very pleased with their service. We would recommend their service. read more

This review is based on my own interpretations of things and also by the in-person service I received with Mike and Drew's crew that completed the work. I put out a request for three 60ft+ evergreen trees to be trimmed down in length and to remove two oleander trees and an oleander bush on the property of a home we recently purchased. I put out several requests for a quote and Evergreen Arborists were one of the first to reply to schedule a bid for the work. Mike came by and looked everything over, discussed the work to be done and even offered to do some extra trimming of a tree in the back yard while the crew was here - for no extra charge. He had a discussion with me about how to be rid of the tree roots over time if the oleander were to come back, due to it being a resilient shrub/tree. The initial date for the work to be completed arrived and I received a call during the time period agreed to. The office let me know the crew was not able to make today and we agreed to a new rescheduled date and time. Drew's crew arrived on the new date and they did all that was asked from Mike's bid of the work, even including the extra tree trim. All members of the team were very nice, polite and answered all the questions we had. They even trimmed more of the evergreen after asking if it was low enough for what we wanted. All work was completed in a timely manner and they cleaned up as much of the remaining work as can be expected. I had asked Drew about my discussion with Mike in regards to treating the stump and asked what they used. He provided me with the treatment for the root and stated he didn't have any with him for this job. He suggested I call the office to schedule someone to come out and perform what I was asking. I called the office the next day and they were not sure of what I was asking and why I was doing so, since it was not listed in the bid. I politely asked that if Mike or Drew could call me back to clarify my misinterpretation of the discussion. I received no call, so I called back the office two days later for a follow up. The office staff read the bid again, which had no listing of treating the root, and stated they talked to Mike and did not treat the roots since we had dogs. I thanked them for the information and left it at that. In hindsight, I know I did not ask the right questions when Mike was explaining how to treat the roots. I also let him know of our concern about treating the roots since we did have dogs. I also misinterpreted what "cut flush" means - in my mind "flush" could have meant flushing the root with killing treatment, as opposed to being "flush" with the level of the ground. That's on me for not asking more questions. Could the office staff have been more helpful in taking my calls, answering my questions and clarifying wether I would get a call back....sure. I'm not going to hold that against them with a review. Based on reviews, it seems there are newer staff. I'm sure they have confidence in reading the bid language and billing/schedule process than the specifics of the onsite work and answering specific questions they have not been trained for. Based on mixed reviews, they receive a lot of frustrated phone calls and are most likely not seasoned enough in customer service to handle them in the moment. I could tell that those I spoke to seemed nervous about my questions. Again, I took this as not being confident in the scope of the call. So if you have read this whole review, what's the point of it...take what you want from my description and make your own judgement based on your choice to select them for the work. I enjoyed my experience with Evergreen Arborists, I will ask them to do more work again and I will know to ask more questions when they are here, instead of assuming how things will go and asking the office staff later. They have trimmed palm trees, hedges, and overgrown trees (sometimes in tight quarters next to our buildings or neighbor fences), and they have removed dead or dangerous trees. My mother had a branch fall on her truck on Father's Day. because of the circumstances within her household she needed the branch removed as soon as possible. Since it was already about 7pm she didn't know if anyone would be able to help. Should have gone with a competitor. Gave us a quote for removal of two trees, came back after one was half down needing a crane for an additional couple grand. Our neighbor gave us the name of a company that can get their equipment in the back yard eliminating the need for a crane. His price for finishing the first tree and removing the second was less than the original from Evergreen, not to mention not needing a crane. To top it off, Evergreen charged us 2/3 of the full quote for removing half a tree and left a mess. Better to shop around for different service. read more

We have 2 largish trees and a few smaller ones in our yard. The large tree, a Modesto ash, suffers from beetle damage and is slowly dying. However, we love the shade from these trees. The game plan long term is to reduce the tree. Also, we have the PGE tree trimmers who butcher the north side of the trees and create lopsided and potentially dangerous off-weighted conditions. Mike Pryor, who I believe is the head guy at Evergreen, came out and did an estimate. The estimate included work on the 2 big trees (reduction) and work on smaller trees. A couple of weeks later, the crew of 4 showed up on time in the morning. We discussed the work. They got busy. At two different times during the day, the crew leader stopped work and pointed out particular limbs that were unsafe and rotting. We appreciated this and agreed. We could see exactly what he was talking about. The crew worked hard, finishing up late in the afternoon. They did a good job of cleaning up. The guys were polite to us and careful in their work. I can't say enough good things about them. Afterwards the trees looked great. We feel much safer now as we approach the winter storms. I would definitely recommend Evergreen Arborists to anyone. read more

Hired this company to cut down a tree and grind stump below grade. Tree came down immediately. Then I got a bill. Reminded them they need to still grind stump. Then the excuses started. It didn't rain for three weeks, then one day it rained and then they said they couldn't grind the stump because it was wet. Then Covid hit so they couldn't do it. But I called the county and asked if stump grinding was prohibited during the shelter in place. They said it was not. So I forwarded the email to evergreen. Hey guess what you can get to work! No response whatsoever. So I waited for the shelter in place to be changed. As soon as it was... no word from evergreen. So I called. Took 2 weeks for them to schedule the stump grinding. The guy came out and ground part of it down a few inches. Not the 14 to 18 inches that's on the contract. (Needed it that deep to pour a footing for construction project). So took a couple more weeks to reschedule. I had my contractor waiting to make sure the guy did it right. No show!! Well he cancelled right before he was supposed to be there. Rescheduled. Then a no show again! Was supposed to show up between 12 and 2. At 1:30 he cancelled again!!! My contractor was waiting the whole time. He rescheduled. I asked he call when he was on his way so the contractor could be there. No call! But he did grind it down to the right depth. My contractor showed up and the grinder dude was a complete a-hole to him. Ok so all total it took three months to get that stump ground. They called me immediately to pay the bill. We had an appointment with this company at 2-4 on a Friday. At 4PM we called and asked when they would come to service the fallen tree, they said "Sorry we are busy and can't make it. Scheduled an estimate two weeks ago for both me and my neighbor. Our time was this morning between 8 and 10. After the appointment had come and gone, I called asking if it was delayed because of the weather. Their callback to me was them canceling because they wanted to keep their time open for emergencies. The weather has been forecasted to be rainy, so they knew that today was going to be a rainy day. Yet they didn't called to cancel or reschedule until they missed the appointment and I had called them. we had both taken the day off from work to be here so not only did they not show but we're missing a day of pay during Christmas time. They said they would call to reschedule, but unless they are going to show up today I will go anywhere else but this company, just due to their lack of respect of our time and their neglect of calling us ahead of time so we can make other arrangements. Very unhappy. Poor customer service Edit... my phone just update voice messages. They did call a little after 8 canceling, however it was the day of and since I go to work at 6 am I still would have missed a day of work. And again rain was forecasted and happened all day Sunday so they knew they weren't coming a day earlier then the scheduled appointment. So unless they want to make up missed pay for the day... ***UPDATE*** After receiving a call from the owner apologizing for the miscommunication and stating they are PG&E contractors and their crews were called on emergency jobs due to the high wind advisory happening in the area (which is why we needed the service as well), I decided to update the review. I couldn't mark the company down for prioritizing emergency calls. Then, my girlfriend was told they will look into working us in sooner than the November date they quoted us. A couple days later we were notified they will be coming out a few days later to perform the service (which was exactly 1 week after original schedule date). They came out and performed everything as expected, while we were at work and were gone before we got home. The only reason the company did not get 5 stars is because, if it weren't for me calling in, we would probably still be waiting for a follow up from the company to schedule an appt. When I called the day of the initial appt, I hear the schedule pull our paperwork and immediate state "the estimate hasn't been approved". After informing her that my girlfriend signed the estimate approving the service, she stated "Oh ya I see that now". This interaction leads me to believe that our estimate was filed under "Call for follow up" or something like "Require's customer approval". If this is not the case, why were we not contacted within the first week after the estimate was given and signed/approved, to schedule an appointment? If this happened, this whole debacle could have been avoided. If it weren't for this, I would have given the review 5 stars. The price for the service was very affordable and the job was completed as expected. If I need more tree service, I will definitely give Everygreen Arborists a call. ***Initial Review*** We spent weeks looking into companies that could cut down our dead/dying trees in our backyard. We found Evergreen Arborists and had them come in to provide an estimate. They drew up an estimate on site and the price was comparable to others. My girlfriend had a verbal agreement with the person who did the estimate to come out the following week 10/10 to remove the trees. I just called and the scheduler answered the phone. I informed her that we have scheduled service for today and wondered what time the crew would be out to our property. The scheduler initially stated that the estimate was not approved by the customer. At the bottom of the written estimate it has a spot for the customer to sign which states they agree to the above pricing and authorize the work to be completed. I told the scheduler that my girlfriend signed and the scheduler, then, stated "oh yes I see that now". So I asked when the next available opening is when a crew can get the work done, she quoted a month out. We have dead trees and with the strong winds that have happened lately we are worried that the trees will fall and cause damage to the house and fence. My girlfriend, then, called the owner, who was the one who provided the estimate, and left him a message. The scheduler called my girlfriend and said a crew will be coming out today between 1 and 3pm. Then at 3 pm she gets another call from the scheduler and she stated they are cancelling again and, again, told her the next available is a month out. We had them schedule us for the first available date, but I will be looking into other options as they dropped the ball and did not go above and beyond to rectify their mistake. If we cannot find a suitable replacement and use this service, I will update my review on the actual work they complete but it will not raise the star rating much, if at all. Very disappointed on how they conduct business. read more

We recently had our Cedar tree worked on by Evergreen. They were prompt in their initial bid and when Mike saw the condition of the tree, sent out his crew the following week. This was based on several branches hanging which could have caused extensive damage to roof of house. The crew he sent "Rafa's was outstanding! They took 1 1/2 days to complete and sent a 75 ft. Bucket to assure they had the right equipment. We were extremely happy with how the tree looks and the cleanup was great. After they took a fence down to access our backyard we were assured they'd fix them. Our fence was never replaced and we ended up putting it back up ourself. They hit our house with a branch and knocked a hole in the outside and suggested that it had been there when they got here. No integrity find somewhere else to have your work done. read more

Awhile ago I had a tree crisis and called several companies for bids. Mike from this company bid *double* the price as the others, talked trash about other companies--things that simply were not true. (I have some expertise in research so it was easy enough to look up the worker's compensation history for each company that gave me a bid). The thing that bothered me the most were the hard sell techniques. I felt pressured and bullied into accepting their bid in the next five minutes or he said he wouldn't be available for the next two days. I felt he was taking advantage of my emergency to force me into a decision. In contrast, the other tree companies who gave me more honest bids (two other companies gave the same bid, which again, was half that of Mike's). They also treated me with courtesy and understood that for a project that would cost multiple thousands of dollars and many days of work --during which I risked liability as a homeowner if anything went wrong on my property--that it was fair for me to take an hour or two to think about how to proceed and to consult a relative who knows about tree trimming. read more

Met with Mike on 1/31. Very knowledgeable with trees shrubs etc... received a reasonable/comparable estimate. At that time of the estimate I told him that I wanted to get it done ASAP. He said his office would call to schedule the appointment as soon as he got back to the office. I waited to hear but ended up Calling them on 2/2. I was scheduled for almost 2 weeks out (2/14) and was told the job would be done in two parts so the second part was scheduled for 2/21. I got a call the day before saying they needed to move my appointment to 2/15. Okay fine. I Called the morning of 2/15 to confirm and was told they couldn't come out due to an emergency and they didn't know when they would be available. I was told I would get a call back on Friday 2/16. I called them at end of day on 2/16 and they said Wed 2/21 was a possibility (remember I already had an appt that day due to part 2 of the job) and they would call back and confirm. I hadn't heard from them 2/19, 2/20 or 2/21. Called them on 2/23 and asked for status of my job and said I needed to get the work done by the end of the month as my home is going on the market. I was assured it would be done by then. I had to call another company that ended up quoting me slightly less for the same job. Called Evergreen Arborists on 2/27 to cancel the job altogether and with any kind of remorse simply got an "okay!" from the receptionist. I'm very upset with all the back and forth and wasting time that I don't have. The one star rating is for mike's knowledge and friendliness. read more

I have used Evergreen a few times over the years and have been satisfied with their work. We had them trim 6 of our queen palms and trim a huge hedge in January. We paid $630. Nine months later I called them for a quote to trim 4 of the queen palms and the owner came out and gave me an estimate for $1400! What? The trees have grown but not enough to make the job more than double what it was 9 months ago; and I was asking for less work! I called the owner and asked him why there was such a huge increase in his pricing. He didn't have an answer for me but he asked me what I expected him to do. I hired them for pruning a very tall pine in front of my house at Davis, despite their offer not being the lowest. The crew of three was very professional. In particular, I was able to communicate with signs with the very capable climber, Lalo, so that the final touches on my tree were made accordingly. They cleaned the place before leaving and responded to some of my last moment requests. The communication with the office was immediate and effective.
