This was my first time doing colour at Evoke and again, the service was impeccable. Giovanni did not rest until my colour was absolutely perfect. I started going to Evoke when they were located on Bloor West. I was new to the neighbourhood and they had a good reputation. Gio and Suzy are my longtime colourist and stylist. Excellent at what they do, professional and personable. I followed them when they moved up Jane Street. The atmosphere at Evoke is always friendly and they go out of their way to create a community vibe. I came here the day before my birthday to get my colour re done and hair cut. Sarah was the one who did my colour and Jon was the one who took care of my hair cut. Both did an amazing job and totally exceeded my expectations. Sarah was super professional and did a fabulous job on the colour, it came out exactly the way I wanted it to. Jon then gave me a hair cut and it came out so beautifully, I was so happy. The whole team was so welcome and really take care of you and go the extra mile to make sure you're satisfied. I found this place on Yelp and decided to call to book an appointment. They were closed so I left a voicemail and my call was promptly returned the following morning. I went with them for that reason, as I had left messages at 2 competitors and have yet to have my call returned! Upon my arrival I was greeted warmly and asked to have a seat. I wasn't offered a beverage or popcorn, but they were busy so I sat and waited patiently. I ended up asking for a juice, the menu is impressive! And it was tasty. When Helen greeted me she was all smiles and extremely professional. She mentioned that she was new but had years of experience under her belt and it showed. She was patient, thoughtful about what I asked for and honest with her feedback. She made friendly conversation and was genuine, not just trying to make small talk. She did a great job on my long fine hair. I could tell she was confident in her ability and that she knew what she was doing. I am super happy with my cut! Paying was also easy and the guy at the desk was a pleasure to deal with. He gave me the discount for finding the place on Yelp (yay!) and he also prepared a personalized welcome package for me with samples and coupons for local businesses. From start to finish, my experience was enjoyable. You can really tell that the owner and stylists take pride in their environment and are proud of where they work. And with good reason! The owner obviously puts a lot of thought into his business and you really feel like you're somewhere special when you're there, and not just because the actual space is stunning (love that exposed brick and floor to ceiling windows!). I decided to try out Evoke salon because of all the raving reviews. They have great customer service - it was easy to book an appointment and everyone was extremely friendly when I showed up. In addition to beverages and snacks, they even presented me with a special birthday treat. I am giving Evoke 3/5 because their listed prices are misleading. The website stated a $50-75 scale for a cut. I was charged $90, excluding tax and tip. This came as a surprise as I didn't expect to be charged more than what was advertised. I wrote in some feedback and now the website says "from $50". To me, this comes across as misleading. I have never had a salon charge almost twice the starting price for a cut. I met the gentlemen who own Evoke at a fundraiser where I got my haircut on the fly. Jon's flying scissors worked magic in the most unique circumstances one could imagine having for a haircut. I decided that it would probably be a good idea to follow up at the Salon to get the cut finished. From the get go the experience was wonderful. The reception staff is friendly and efficient. Being polite and respectful to a woman who came in looking for a service that they don't offer and taking the time to talk to her about what she was hoping to accomplish with her next visit to a hair salon. I was offered a beverage and was even encouraged by another patron to try the juice. Before Jon even touched a pair of scissors he talked me through what he envisioned for my hair listening to everything I was hoping to accomplish. I'm someone who bounces from hairdresser to hairdresser because I can't find someone who can cut my fairly simple hair. I will definitely be back not just because of the haircut being brilliant, but because Jon and his staff live and breathe what they do, it's more then just a job for them. A combination of passion and talent is rare these days but it's front and center at Evoke. Just a quick edit: everyone has been RAVING about my new 'do. I went to Evoke Bloor Street and will never ever go back. Jon butchered my hair leaving me embarrassed to go out. I have baby fine hair. I told Jon not to use thinning scissors because that wrecked my hair in the past. What did he do? He used straight scissors achieving the same effect. Dear Jon .. you CANNOT do that technique to fine hair .. google it! As a result, my hair has all these loose strands that stick out so I look like a frizz head alllllll the time. Aside from that horror the cut doesn't suit my face and is just ugly. It's long at the sides, tapered in the back, thinned out & too short. Jon prides himself with communicating to clients. Why bother? He did what he wanted to anyways and it wasn't what I talked about. If Evoke responds to this negative review I can only say ... well, you know I spent $120 for this haircut. Please see pictures I've added to this page. I asked Jon for a cut that looks good with or without product. To me, that meant please cut my hair how it falls naturally. I assumed he knew I wanted to look good. SPOILER: Evoke sends an email & invites you to review them. I wrote a negative review, saw it was indeed posted and then later, of course, saw it was indeed deleted. The review program is owned by Demandforce. A subscription is paid and owners can contact Demandforce and have reviews deleted. Voila! That's why you'll only see 4 and 5 star reviews. This review is for my visit to Evoke in March 2014 as a hair model, a year ago I know, but probably for the best because I would have made a very emotional rant had it been right after. Now, I have been a hair model on and off for years at well known salons like Vidal and Aveda for cuts and colours so I thought Evoke would be a nice salon to try. Oh, how wrong I was... I had a 9AM hair model appointment with a woman named Karmen. I arrived there promptly on time but soon discovered the salon was still closed. I tried contacting Karmen a few times wondering if she was running late and then left a voice message at the salon. I waited a good 20-30 minutes outside in the cold (keep in mind that winter was one of our worst w/ ice storms and days of -20 degree weather). I was shaking so badly and no stores nearby were open because they usually open around 11AM. Luckily, I discovered another salon had opened a few doors down called D2E, whose owner kindly took pity and allowed me to sit inside. The owner often checked up on me, asking if I was okay because I was shaking so badly (took 40mins to warm myself up) and even offered me tea. I will always remember her kindness! Anyways, by this time it was around 10-10:30AM. The salon had not yet officially opened but the staff had come in so when I called again, the receptionist finally picked up. I explained the situation and discovered Karmen had called in sick the day before but had not bothered to notify me! So unprofessional! Receptionist didn't really offer me anything in regards of compensation until I asked if I could just speak to the manager. If nothing else, I wanted to make a complaint against Karmen and let her boss know how inconsiderate she had been. The receptionist then asked me to hold and after speaking with manager about my situation said I can come in for a complimentary hair cut by their senior stylist Todd. I was vastly less annoyed by then (probably because I wasn't freezing anymore) and took them up on their offer. I ended up getting a nice cut and blow dry from him, so if you do try this salon anyways I do recommend Todd (who was very nice by the way). In the end, while the salon tried to make it up to me, will I go there again or recommend it to any friends and family? Unfortunately, no. I am too scarred by that experience and Karmen never even got back to me or offered any apologies. I actually wouldn't have even written this review if it wasn't for Karmen having the gall to try adding me on LinkedIn recently. I hope Evoke doesn't have her still on staff because she is doing the salon no favours. read more

I loved Erin at the Bloor location of Evoke. She's youthful, creative, fun, and wonderful to chat with. If you're considering a very different look - as I was, going from a grown-out angled bob to an asymmetrical cut - Erin is your gal. She'll suggest you take things a tad further than you had in mind - which is something I like. Most importantly of all, she listens. The salon is clearly competing to be #1 in terms of customer service. A nice drinks menu, snacks (almonds, dried fruit, popcorn) with a fabulously dressed receptionist, who has a thing for the pin-up style. Great salon and a great stylist in Erin. read more

I came here with awful-looking hair from a self-cut (capital LOL, haha) . I left with sleek, shiny, neat hair- exactly what I wanted! Best part was that it was free! :) Best deal I've ever scored in my life thus far! The cut was free as practice for a junior stylist (I assume). This place is great! I'm always welcomed by name with a smile and a beverage. I see Todd Dowel who I was recommended to when my old stylist left. I was a bit nervous switching to someone new but Todd is amazing! He's meticulous about every hair on my head which I can appreciate and he can easily hold a conversation. Great guy working in a great environment. One thing I had to get used to was that they don't use clippers at Evoke. The whole cut is done by hand with scissors. Still get a good quality cut. This is my go to salon. My hair dresser Erin is AMAZING, sweet and so talented. She has neat cutting techniques that always fascinates me! The receptionist is really sweet and organized as well, always follows up a few days later to make sure everything was good with my haircut. If you have a fringe/bangs, they will trim it for free! All the products, which is pretty minimal, they use smell so good and are mostly (if not all) enviro-friendly. They have a large canvas in the salon where you can paint a tree! I haven't painted one yet, but I will save some time to do it next time! It is hard to get a last minute appointment so plan at least 3-4 days in advance. read more

I've been coming to Evoke for almost a year now and I've been very satisfied. I felt I needed a change from my previous stylist at Parlour (another fantastic salon). I see Erin for cuts and I always leave feeling like not only did I get what I wanted, but I got it with a twist I would have never thought of. The one time I didn't see Erin, I admit I was disappointed but I didn't want to make a fuss. It was my choice to try someone new and his ideas didn't mesh with mine. I was offered a solution by the receptionist when she noticed I wasn't completely pleased, but as my hair is very short and I was trying to grow it out longer, there wasn't much to be fixed. Sarah does my colour and she's realistic about what she can accomplish. She suggests options and explains what the various colour combinations might result in (for example I wanted to go from bleach blond to ash brown and she warned it might turn green). I decided to take her advice and tried her suggestion of a hair colour and was happy with the result. Overall the salon is great with excellent customer service. When Erin was sick, I got a phone call from the owner asking if I could reschedule. I appreciated the phone call from the owner himself; it was a nice touch. read more

I've been a client for about three years and the last two times I've been in sealed the deal, will NEVER go back. My BIGGEST pet peeve about hair salons is when they double book on YOUR appointment time. I HATE that! Hey!! I'm paying $86 for this haircut? Then show me some respect and don't double book my time, leaving me to wait 30 mins for you.... because then I get shorted 30 mins on my appointment, causing you to rush through my haircut so you can stay on time. The first time it happened, he was apparently interviewing someone for a job, but then came back and smelled like cigarettes.... really??? No one even came out to tell me - seriously?? And the second time, I'm waiting there like a dummy for over 30 mins while he's clearly working on someone else's hair. When I said, "Why am I waiting for 30 mins?", he just shrugged his shoulders.... not impressed.... :( It wasn't even just a haircut either... it was a cut and a color... total spent? over $200 each time!! And I must be the biggest dummy because I still left a tip. Guessing I'm the sucker.... never again, I'm on the hunt for a new salon. read more

This review is over due since I visited in February, but still necessary. Decided to try a more high-end salon thinking I was going to spend a little extra for a really nice haircut. The staff and atmosphere were really nice but after leaving, one of my friends pointed out that one side of my hair was significantly longer than the other (see photo with black shirt) I decided to email the salon and politely let them know I wasn't happy with my cut, especially after spending $100. They made me an appointment to come in and get it fixed where the hairdresser was very apologetic and re-did my hair with no cost. However, it's now uneven on the other side and has been ever since, though not nearly as noticeable (see photo in white shirt taken today). After all this, my hair ended up a lot shorter than I wanted it to be so I decided to let it grow out a while before trying to get it fixed. Will be going to a different salon though! read more

This place is just great. Like others have shared, I have also flitted from salon to salon for years in search of an atmosphere and stylist that I mesh with. As cheesy as it sounds, I feel as though I've finally found a resting place. Why? What's different about this place? Surely the townie-hipster type would be drawn to its "cool" and "edgy" vibe, but what I'm most happy with is its execution of the basics: specifically, customer service and skilled coiffurists. And am I going to complain about the array of fine beverages that I was offered while waiting? Um, no. Not at all. Keep in mind that this is all on top of the fact that I wasn't 100% happy with the haircut I received during my first visit. I blame this not on the skill of the stylist, but perhaps my inability to communicate what I wanted. (I admit that I can be pretty fickle with my hair. I want it to look awesome with putting little to no effort into it. That is often a problem.) But I received a follow-up call from the salon a week or so later and was given the opportunity to express my concerns with my cut. I was a bit hesitant at first, but then I rationalized that they want me to be happy (surely not to lambaste them in a review such as this) but also, just maybe, because they genuinely cared? I was warmly assured that it was welcome feedback and that I could come back in for some hair tweaking. I am so glad I did, as Jon helped me achieve the great hair + no effort reality that I desired (which surely required some "mad skills" [as the kids like to say]). So, take it from a cynic. My new favourite salon. I came here because my previous hairdresser moved, and I am very apprehensive about trying new hairstylists. You never know what you're going to get. I came here first to get my colour done, to scope out the place and see if I liked it before booking a cut appointment. Sarah is great, and super friendly. They have normal colour formulas but also an organic line, which is a bit more pricey, but perfect for a preggo mom to be like me. The colour doesn't last as long (maybe less a month) I found. After colour is applied, you'll sit under a dryer for about 30 mins which isn't needed with regular colour. They also include a blow dry in the price - which compared to my old salon this is a steal, they used to charge me separately and I would rack up a bill of about $200+. With my organic colour it was about $110, including blow dry. Probably less with regular colour formula. Expect to be there for about 2 hours. I booked my hair cut with Jon. I never know how to choose a stylist. but everyone looked really friendly. They seem to all have a good skill set too. Jon is one of the owners (Hi Jon) and for the price I was paying previously, the price point here doesn't compare. The cut was great, and he was very personable. I've never spent the entire session chatting with the stylist and usually have my head down in a book. He listened to my concerns and how I like my hair and maintain it. I I'm very cautious about stylists especially the first time, but he made me feel comfortable and didn't do anything without consultation. You can tell he has both a passion for hair but also customer service and making the customer happy. The best test was after washing it, my hair still feels great. I asked when I needed to come back and it wasnt until about 4 months, which I felt was a really long time (this is a good thing!). They also offer free cleanup for bangs or thinning of bulk in the hair between. Just book an appointment! Other perks include a whole juice, tea or coffee menu and sometimes freshly baked popcorn. They will also follow up and call you a week later. If you're not satisfied you can get a clean up or trim for free. . I've been really happy with my last few appointments here and would recommend it to anyone in the west end. I think the prices are quite reasonable for a full service high quality.salon. If you're looking for something cheaper, you can go to Supercuts, you get what you pay for. read more

What a joy to finally find a place that does excellent color and amazing cuts for my curly hair. For years I've been trying to find someone who can do for my hair what the hair stylist I had when I was a teenager did, and I've finally found my new home. It's funny how you settle. I'd been settling for haircuts I was never really happy with, ones that would almost require I straighten my hair if I wanted it to look nice. I'd given up, I thought there was no one left who knew how to enhance natural curl. I was so wrong! John did my haircut and Sarah did my color. Both excellent. Very welcoming vibe to the place, too - I felt right at home. The only reason I gave it four out of five is because the price is a bit high. I use to love having my hair coloured by Philip, when Evoke was located on Bloor. I'm giving this place 2 stars because of Gio. The first time Gio coloured my hair, I had asked for a root touch up and "FULL" highlights. When Gio was finished I noticed a large, untouched area behind my head. When I mentioned this, Gio said he didn't have much time to fix it and promised me he would fix it next time I came in. Well, next time I came in for a very early morning appointment. I noticed the back of my hair remained untouched and Gio told me EXACTLY the same thing as he said on my previous visit. He didn't have the time and would fix it next visit. Well guess what?! If " you do not have time" for your clients , then I will spend my time and money where they CAN find time to properly colour my hair. There won't be any further visits! Too bad Philip left, he was a wonderful colourist and great asset to Evoke. read more
