Used to be better? I've been here many years ago. I find the salon more cluttered than before. My usual stylist at another salon is on vacation so I figured I come back here for a trim. For a typical Japanese salon, I would give it 2.5 stars for the price and what I got. Came here for a haircut, maybe 3 inches to bring my hair back to above shoulder length and add some layers back to give it some shape with my fine hair. I'm used to Asian salons will have a good shampoo, head massage with the conditioner and another rinse through after the cut. Didn't get much of a massage. No 3rd rinse. It was literally 30 mins with Tomoyuki on the director level. Cut was fine. Nothing I am amazed with. Not sure if it's worth it. I think he rushed it because the customer next to me was just getting her hair rinsed out after colouring and/or treatment so he was going back to servicing her when I was done with my cut. Unlikely coming back. Some might like his speedy service though. He's polite. Just my expectations for this price I've had much better service with a decent haircut. read more

Minnie always does a great job with my hair and takes a lot of care into making sure I am happy with my hair! I am always sad cutting my hair short so she tries to take off as little as possible every time I go for a haircut. She also is very talented with bleaching my hair before at other salons my scalp would always feel irritated with the bleach on but Minnie is amazing at getting all the hair bleached without getting it on your scalp or having it irritated. Another absolutely amazing experience at this salon! I've actually been to one of their other locations - at College and Bay - for ombré, and booked the same stylist this time. The said stylist, Masato, brought it up during our session and mentioned that he had checked the records and saw that he had dyed my hair before - just one of those delightful details which show how much they care about their customers. The haircut started with an intensely comfortable hair wash, together with a head massage that made me never want to get up from the chair. I almost fell asleep and had to exert the utmost effort to controlling my facial expressions of pleasure. Then followed what must be the gentlest haircut I've ever had. No hair pulling or head tugging here! Again, I had to use all of my willpower to stop myself from falling asleep. Masato just had remarkably soft touches and was exceptionally attentive to all the details of my hair. The entire process took approximately an hour and I was very happy with the end result. Service was polite and thoughtful throughout, from the coat check to the stylist following me all the way to the door to see me off. Utterly worth the price! I'm planning to make this at least an annual treat for myself - maybe they can put just the hair wash on the services list, I'd come back repeatedly for that. :D read more

Before I start this review - Huge shoutout to GEORGE!!! I found N15 through the power of Yelp and after reading about Japanese influence on all their hair techniques! I was certainly very convinced about trying this place after checking their Instagram. I made an appointment to have my hair coloured! On arrival, they did a temperature check (which I thought was a great initial step considering our current pandemic situation) and asked me to sanitise hands before entering the salon! Ofcourse, keeping the mask on was mandatory! The inside of this salon is super fancy and has a very chic vibe! Super white and clean ! I had the appointment booked with a senior stylist - George! I told him I was hoping to get - basically a darker tone to suit my olive complexion. He suggested a dark ashy shade ( which I never would have picked) and I decided to go with his suggestion The colour turned out great - better than what I expected and he also suggested a few things about trying out a different style to support my natural curls! I did end up having it blow dried to see how the colour actually looks! George was super gentle with my hair through the entire process! Overall, I had a great experience and am super happy with how the colour turned out! Plan on visiting George soon for a haircut. Definitely worth the money! read more

I've been coming here for two years. I've gone to Mana before but today I went to see Celine for a cut and balayage. Salon was busy post covid and I booked an appointment six weeks in advance. You should expect to wait outside until they come get you (gently knock on the door maybe). They took my temp and gave me a pump of hand sanitizer. Everyone wore masks, spaced out and sanitized the hair washing station each time. The salon has a nice vibe, quieter side and great music. I was there for six hours (!!!!!). Celine was so patient and gentle with my hair. She didn't jump between clients and only attended to me the whole time. She let me know what colours were achievable and fixed my diy covid bangs I would suggest: - Emailing them after booking online to show them what colour you're trying to do - Weekend morning appointments (nice and quiet) - Wear a disposable mask (ear elastic piece gets wet and they were very kind to give me a new one on my way out) - Bring a sweater, ac gets chilly Highly recommend Mana and Celine! read more

Thought some more on this and updating my rating to 1 star. I am very disappointed that the stylist Celine didn't tell me the entire back of my head was still ORANGE. She didn't even offer to show me the back with a mirror. So I left thinking my hair was good and tipped her $50. They even charged me the full amount of $350. They could've been honest and said hey the dye didn't work out, here's a discount or come back next time and we'll fix it for free. But nothing. The dye also washed out in 1 wash and looked terrible - I had to redye my hair using a box dye and even that looked WAY better than the job my stylist did. The box dye gave me the coral pink colour I had asked for and has lasted 4 washes so far. Celine was also rude to me at one point - she laughed at me for the state of my hair and said I really need a haircut. I appreciate the advice but don't appreciate being laughed at, it's COVID and salons were closed for over a year. I also think the salon workers are racist because they don't post pictures of your hair unless you're East Asian or white. I've been following for years and NEVER saw a brown or black person's pictures. I know POC go to their salon, but they don't post them. I'm angry and sad that I wasted $450 of my money on a racist salon. Never going back again and telling EVERYONE I know to stay away. EDIT: They messaged me offering a 20% off toning service but I am never going back. One of my worst salon experiences now that I've had time to think about it. The hair dressers here are so kind and professional. I gave them a description of what I wanted and they made sure throughout the haircut that we were going in the right direction. And not surprisingly, the result was exactly what I asked for. I didn't know the cost going into it and ended up paying a very steep charge of $300 (cut and colour) including a generous tip. I would probably ask for price estimate next time. I think the results are beautiful but I think I could have gotten similar results for a much lower price. I had my hair coloured 3 days ago on the 23rd with Tai. He was patient and the service was good. However, after one wash my hair colour has faded substantially and my hair looks "brassy yellow" in some parts and in other parts it looks brighter on the top than the bottom : / I've had my hair coloured before, and I even asked about hair care (frequency of shampoo and purple shampoo use) afterwards. I totally disappointed. I went to Dundas and bay salon for two times. One was last year, I did hair perm with a guy ( forgot his name) , which is really bad. My hair got damaged seriously, and my hair style was bad. And this time I gave the second chance to went gain to get my hair cut and treatment. So I tried anther hair stylist with Jay. When she started to cut my hair, I already mentioned her and reminded her many times I don't want my hair to cut too short and my hair is not middle part. My hair is very long but she cutting my hair very short and keeping my hair is middle part style with fringe. In the end I asked her again why my hair is middle part and she asked me to try middle part style because my hair is too short to do side part fringe after cutting. Of course it's going to be very short after cutting my hair in the middle side but put my hair back to side part. Isn't it common sense? Also during cutting my hair, she was keeping me to sit very straight even I sat very straight during her cutting which was very strange I've never had this similar experience before. I can guarantee you every ABG in the city probably comes to either this salon or one other one in the city I've been coming here for 4 years now? My hair dresser, Tai, has been through it with me. I've been through many phases here: caramel bronde, to ash blonde, to dark silver, pink hair (girls you know this phase is a cry for help), he's coloured my hair extensions, and even helped me DIY toning my own hair during lockdowns lol. I currently still have blonde hair right now and my hair health is actually pretty good. Granted I do my own Olaplex hair treatments too, but I just wanted to stress the importance of you get what you pay for. I used to go to other cheaper colourists when I was younger and my hair was pretty damaged, crunchy and dry. I've also made the mistake of doing box coloured hair dye in the past If you're reading this with a stingy mindset, and you're side eyeing that boxed colour... DON'T DO IT. You really get what you pay for ‍ If you don't have the money for it, I can guarantee you, your hair will be better off without any dye- just wait until you can afford it! I don't know what it is about having Asian hair dressers work on Asian hair that's such a game changer, but it is. Highly recommend coming here! read more

Overall, the experience was relaxing and perfect for those who don't enjoy salons. There are a few things that did bother me, but I think I'm being nit picky at that point. It was my first time there, so I'm not familiar with their process. It's been almost a year since I last had my hair cut, I used to go to another salon an 1.5hrs away but I want to minimize my travel during COVID. They didn't check my temperature while I was there, but the staff was wearing PPE the entire time which was nice to see. Sidenote: They only accept cash right now because their credit/debit machine is broken and I suggest you bring an extra mask just in case (I kept trying to sneeze because the hair that fell in-between my mask and my nose was tickling me) My stylist did put a lot of effort into my hair, and mind you my hair is thick so it is very difficult to manage. So I do appreciate him taking his time on it. Ideally, I wish there was more communication (in comparison to what I saw with the other more senior stylists), to find out what I wanted or to review the condition of my hair. This might be due to a language barrier. I went from hair past my ribcage to just past shoulder length. I was hoping to get air bangs (similar to IU, Kim So Hyun or Miyawaki Sakura 2020) so that I can grow out to be side fringes later (like Han Ye Seul) on but it came out wider/fuller and more hair was cut than needed (so it looked closer Taeyeon's choppy bangs or Murakawa Vivian). This might be due to the nature of my hair, so it makes my head seems more square/boxy and makes my face a little bit wider. The initial reactions I've received so far was "it can be fixed"/"oh no... at least you can tie your hair up and pin the bangs back?". Honestly, I'm hopeful it will probably look better when in grows out in a couple months, but as of right now, it's a bit edgier/more mature than I was looking for. I'll stay in hiding for a bit/turn off my camera for meetings until then. I will maybe return in a few months when it does grow out to trim the ends. read more

Let me preface this review by saying I am not a fan of haircuts. I hated getting one, and my last haircut was a long time ago because the hairstylist ended up cutting it too short. Needless to say, I have a hard time trusting my stylists. When I booked an appointment with Mana for a much needed haircut, I was apprehensive at best. Now, I can say I am so happy I did! I finally have a new stylist I can trust. Mana was lovely. She was patient and meticulous. She was quiet but caring enough to ask if I was satisfied with the length consistently. During the appointment, you can tell that she would carefully cut each strand with detail. My end result was everything I asked for. She kept the length that I wanted and she didn't thin it out too much (an issue I find with many other salons). In short: Mana is amazing! TLDR: stylist kept saying he doesn't want to cut my hair short, came out with much longer cut than I wanted 1. I always get a short on sides/back and long on top undercut 2. When I showed photos, stylist said he's familiar with style, agreed to it 3. But during the cut he kept saying no to cutting it as short as I wanted 4. I eventually gave up asking him to cut it shorter after 3 times and hearing no every time. Cost $60, cut came out way longer than I wanted. It does look decent, but wasn't what I wanted at the end of the day. EDIT: They offered me a complimentary haircut. I wasn't interested in seeing the same hair stylist again though (no point - he'd just say no to cutting my hair short again). Kudos to the salon for offering at least. read more

I like to think that I was N15's first couple of customers, back in the day at the original store next to the Running Room up the street from this second location. It was by pure coincidence too, that just so happened to be the condo building I lived in at the time! This is definitely on the "splurge" side of haircuts / services / things in general to spend your money on, but you won't be disappointed. I've always been on the nervous end of haircuts, I remember crying at the salon as a kid and then as I got older, being disappointed at the "final" mirror look at the hair salon. But N15 changed all that! In the times that I've been here, although the stylists will speak very little English and little conversation will be had during the hair cutting experience, damn do they know what they're doing. I trust this salon 100% when it comes to my hair and my hair needs. And can I just say that their decor is so pretty? If you're in the area - or even if you're not - trust N15 with your hair. Today was my third time going to N15 for colour/root touch up/cut&style with Celine and I am in LOVE with my new hair!! The receptionist was super friendly and full of smiles when I walked in which made me feel very welcomed and ready for my appointment! I felt very safe coming to the salon despite the recent surge in cases bc they are practicing safe covid-19 protocol by checking your proof of vaccination + temperature and they also provide hand sanitizer at the door. I first came to N15 during the summer to fix my awful pandemic hair and Celine was so amazing from the start of the consulting process right to the very end of the appointment. She is very skilled at what she does and provides super helpful recommendations when you're unsure of if a certain colour or style would suit you. She is also very well caught up with the latest trends and looks out for the best interest of your hair. She has done such a great job that strangers would come up to me and tell me that my hair is really nice and I even had my manager go get her hair done with her bc she liked my hair so much! The environment is super clean and all the staff are very friendly so if you are debating whether or not you should go, this is your sign to go!! This was my first experience at the new location and I'm extremely happy with my experience here. It's just a short walk away from their original location but conveniently placed near the TTC which is an added plus. The staff here is very welcoming and friendly, as I was offered hot water or tea while waiting for my appointment. I did my colour session with Tai who I cannot stress enough how detail oriented he is. Tai was very polite and patient with me and delivered exactly what I asked for my desired hair colour! He knows his way around bleaching darker hair and checked often to make sure I wasn't overprocessed during the bleaching procedure. As you can see from the pictures, I wanted something pretty drastic from what I had, which meant that I was looking for someone who not only knew asian hair, but also knew how to lift it for the extreme color I wanted. When I went in for my consultation, he was super informative, letting me know exactly what I was in for when it came to maintenance. We found out my hair was pretty stubborn and took a couple of tries to lift it to the color it needed to be for the two tone look I was going for. What was supposed to be a 6-hour appointment turned into an 8-hour appointment (through no fault of anyone's but my stubborn hair!) and Tai remained cheerful and positive the entire time! He really knows his colors and is a true artist! Thanks Tai!!! The salon is located just north of Dundas, on the east side, making it super easy to get to via TTC. I went to this place for the first time to get a wash & style(straight flat hair) and was thinking since they're Asian, they should be great in flat Iron. She did the worst style ever, blow dry my hair,puffi and said here you go, I said I want flat hair, she started doing Flat Iron but really didn't know what was she doing, she iron then brush ‍ so I ended up going home and do it my myself. I visited N15 after 16 months of not visiting a professional salon. Needless to say, my hair needed some serious work after I damaged it quite a bit with boxed hair color. Tomomi worked her magic and I left the salon with a beautiful shade of brown hair and literally the best haircut I've ever had in my life. Tomomi really took her time making sure that every strand of hair was cut perfectly and that my hair was evenly colored. I've been seeing Hiroki since he first started working at Bay/College, pretty sure I was there the first week the original salon opened. I've never looked back. He is modest in his haircuts, so you tell him to cut an inch and he will only cut an inch. Usually he's, as someone else explained, "a man of few words", but this time he was super chatty with me and it was lovely! The new salon is just as bright and clean as the other location. The hair washing and scalp massage is a highlight always. This time they draped me in the gown as usual but it has arms! So you can use your phone/drink a water still. Amazing! Always on time, and if you post a review on Yelp you get 10% off. Hiroki is a joy of a hairdresser and I'll follow him (not to MARKHAM...!!) wherever he goes ;) glad he stayed downtown!!! Most of the clientele were Asian, and they definitely have an all Asian staff, but that hasn't ever made me feel uncomfortable, they are inclusive for all hair types and welcome you with open arms! read more

TL;DR: Incredible. Go here. Full story: After my wedding, I cut off 14" of my hair to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society. I went to another salon I'd previously been to (but with a different stylist since the one I saw before was gone) and asked to end up with a collarbone-length bob. I think the stylist I saw wasn't very experienced, so she cut off the 14", evened it out, and called it a day. I ended up with one-length hair that had no style - and because my hair is naturally on the coarse side, it spread out at the bottom like a triangle/Dora the Explorer. So I decided - I'm a grown woman, I make a decent living, and I'm about to start a new job - I'm going to find a super experienced master stylist. It's time to take my professional image more seriously. So I looked around on Yelp and decided to give N15 a try, since they obviously understand Asian hair (plus I like that they use great products from Japan - I love Japanese hair and skin products in general), and I made an appointment with Hiroki. Hiroki's a man of few words, with a really cool, edgy personal style. And the salon is super chic and beautiful. I told him what I wanted and he told me what was realistic to achieve (based on the pictures I showed him), what would be the least damaging to my hair for what I wanted to do down the road, and what he thinks would work best. Fully confident in his abilities and experience at that point, I told him to do whatever he felt was right. I didn't have much length to play around with, which already put me out of my comfort zone - I went from having almost hip-length hair in October to collarbone-length in December. Then as Hiroki started strategically cutting and adding in layers, I started to feel a little nervous - a lot of length was coming off! I hadn't had such short hair since I was maybe 12! But when he was done and I took a proper look in the mirror - damn, if I didn't end up with the most beautiful haircut I've ever had. It was short but feminine, youthful, it had movement and texture at the back, it framed my face just right in the front and it just looked really beautiful. That's what makes a master stylist a master, you guys! The best part is, I told Hiroki that I'm hopeless at styling my own hair. All I do is wash and dry my hair - so the style has to be super low-maintenance. And it is. It doesn't look exactly the same as when I walked out of the salon because I don't dry it with a brush, but it looks great without any effort on my part. All my colleagues and family members piled on the compliments when they saw my hair for the first time afterwards, which has never happened before. We also went through some Japanese magazines and she kindly explained how different styles can be achieved. The result was perfect. The length, the form and the layers - everything was done exactly the way I liked. The whole experience was relaxed, thorough, friendly and informative. I was so nervous for my appointment because I did a lot of research on hair salons before choosing this one. I ended up booking with Tai for a womens hair cut. As soon as I entered the salon the lady at the front desk was sooo welcoming and sweet, I loved her energy! immediately I felt excited for my appointment.
