They have a good selection of video cameras at reasonable prices and do have discounts sometimes. They have good quality commercial cameras as well. Salespeople have always been really professional and polite and are quick to help you and find the items that you need. By far, this is my preferred rental house in LA. Sometimes a production I'm working on will need to rent a lot of gear and sometimes I just need a couple things for a smaller job. In every case, EVS is my first stop. I always experience the same courtesy, professionalism, attention to detail and good cheer, despite the size of my order. And their gear is always in good condition. This is in sharp contrast to many rental houses I have experienced that can be bloated, pretentious and sloppy. Brian Dutton has always handled me very well and is gracious to take the time to answer all questions. He's almost always able to work within the budget that production has allocated, as well. Amazing store. They have most everything I need for video equipment and then some. The staff is very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and willing to talk with you about almost anything. It's a small store whose primary clients are online shoppers, so it feels like staff is everywhere in there. While I wish they would put prices on their merchandise, their catalog has everything covered. At my last visit, I feel like I saved a butt load, but I also feel like I bought the store. I called the store explaining that I needed to rent two microphones that "you know, could just plug into the camera. This is pretty idiot proof, right?" If that doesn't tell you right there that I'm not an expert, I don't know what does. The customer service people who handle rentals were nice enough, but they assumed I had a professional grade camera, so the microphones I rented didn't work with the handheld video camera I was using. That amounted to paying $87 for a paperweight. I picked up the mics on Friday, and because this store is closed on weekends there was no opportunity to remedy the mistake. If you'd like to rent anything from EVS, here's what I'd suggest: 1. Ask questions, because the employees sure aren't going to. I would have been nice to hear, "What kind of camera are you using these mics with?" 2. If you're not using industry-grade equipment this place isn't for you. This is what I learned when I returned the mics - they don't really carry what I needed. Again, something I could have learned if the rental person had asked a few questions. 3. You'd better know exactly what you're looking for. I'd do all the research yourself or bring in your own expert. The store employees aren't going to go out of their way to help you figure it out. Here's the deal: I had a great experience picking up the mics. The store is clean and the staff was nice, but everything after that was barely two stars. I wasted time and money because I relied on EVS to be the experts for me. I do appreciate the offer of a discount on my next rental, but honestly, I won't be renting here ever again. read more

If you're like me...wait, you're not like me. Only me is like me. Is that even a sentence? Hmm. Anyway... In today's filmmaking climate, the HD revolution is undeniably seductive: shoot cheaply yet with breathtaking image quality and own the means of production. Easy right? Not really. Why? There is a TON of misinformation amidst a confusing cloud of amateur opinion floating around on the internet. Keep in mind that the 'expert review' you're depending on for camera/lens purchase advice may have been written by someone who's filmmaking experience consists of three 'camera tests' shot in their backyard in Boise. Enter EVS. All of those filmmaking products you read about on forums and in blogs are available right in front of your face, and there are a bunch of knowledgeable salespeople (including Cody, the humble owner) available to help you at all times. They're not a camera store who decided to carry video equipment. They are a pro video store that has repositioned themselves to take care of all of the needs of the HD and DVSLR filmmaking crowd, one that is not trying to sell you anything so much as educate you. Example: I'd purchased a lesser viewfinder and wanted to upgrade but Cody steered me away from the $400 purchase, suggesting that I wait for the new tiny monitors that would soon be released. Now that's customer service. And perhaps most importantly, they actually keep stock on hand! Do you like ordering mail order? I sure don't. I'd rather actually fondle the equipment I'm looking to purchase. And apparently they have stages being built as well, so in that sense, they're sort of a one-stop shop. I'll note that parking is easy as well. Every tried parking at Samy's? Or getting someone on the phone? I'm in no way connected to them other than having bought gear there and to be honest, I'm generally very skeptical about semi-pro filmmaking anyway, so take my endorsement at surface value. As an independent documentary filmmaker, I have to buy about $5000 in new equipment every few years. It's a stressful process especially given the constantly changing landscape of technology. And as a female filmmaker, it can be hard to find good, solid help from sales associates who take your questions (every single one of them) seriously and respectfully. This is my third time upgrading the equipment I make a living from: 1st was in Boston, 2nd at Samy's, and most recently, EVS. I found out about EVS after talking to a female colleague who is a highly skilled camera technician. She took me to EVS and said I would be in good hands. She was right on. EVS is now my go-to store. There aren't many places in America you can go to and buy something like a Metabones Mark II EF to NEX adapter for the same price as buying it direct from Hong Kong and having to wait two weeks for it to get here. Casey spent 2 hours with me going over camera backpacks. So incredibly helpful!! These guys know their stuff inside out, they are made of pure sugar, and they seek out the specialty items that can really make a difference in your camera kit. I've been producing 30 years and have dealt with all the major vendors and suppliers in town over time: Panavision, Otto Nemenz, BERC, Bexel, Cineworks, Jack Pill, etc. My first encounter at EVS a couple of years ago was to buy an expendable or two and I liked the experience there with a very helpful salesperson. This week i needed to out fit an ENG kit and worked with Tommy and Ben, who are both knowledgeable and insightful about the type of I work I do (documentaries) and gear solutions for the run and gun nature of such efforts. Even though I didn't buy the HD camera from them (they did not offer it at the time), they suggested I bring the camera in so they could outfit and accessorize it properly. I bought Sennheiser lav mic, a Sennheiser shotgun mic, an LED lighting kit and some grip/expendable supplies. This kit rocks in a big way, thanks to Ben and Tommy. Also, I had a major hand-held shoot to do, and the camera is very front-heavy, which was going to be a drain on me physically, esp. my wrist. Ben suggested a low-priced telescoping mono-pod, which turned out to be a perfect solution. I got great, steady shots, as well as some very cool high angle shots. They will match prices on the web and go the extra mile to provide service to keep you coming back. They sell excellent equipment and are not such a huge facility that the customer doesn't get the personal touch. I don't often write reviews like this, but I do when the experience warrants it. I've been working in LA in Production for 7 years, and this is my absolute favorite, go-to rental house. They know their products and inventory thoroughly, and can even help give insight as to what you need with the budget you've got. They've helped me learn more about gear, which has been really helpful for my line of work. You can expect friendly employees and good prices, and you can count on them to have working items on time and to bill correctly (episodically, weekly, monthly... they're good with follow through). I've been coming to this store since it was a small closet space rental joint. Since 2004, I've watched this place morph into a large production studio/rental house/gear store, so much to the point where I feel like I myself have grown with them. I've recently been coming a lot over the past year and I always find myself purchasing something with a good deal. The people are always nice and very helpful, especially Zack and Ben. They have most basic things you need for small productions from lighting, to cameras and accessories. As I stated before, you can rent gear, and they have a couple little sound stages, all for the common low budget filmmaker, this place is perfect for them. They consistently have saved me when I was in a pinch, and they're always willing to work something out if my budget can't get what I need. Chris and Rich bend backwards to please their clients, and during my semi-nervous endeavor to film an infomercial, these two gentlemen were here for me every second of the way. Awful. I no longer shop here. I wanted to keep my money local and Buy from merchants who were in California, but after repeated attempts to give EVS a chance, I now refuse to ever buy anything from them ever again. I own a rapidly growing film production company and easily spend 5 figures a month on production equipment purchases. These people were slow on every occasion, sold us gear that was the exact opposite of what we needed, then would not honor their own return policy when we tried to return it. The sales people are full of incorrect knowledge and say they aren't working you for a commission but obviously are. The nonsense they spew seems legit but it's all sales babble. Do yourself a favor. Buy from B&H Photo online. They answer questions correctly, have useful reviews of their products on their site, cost less, don't charge sales tax, and ship many items for free within a week. I don't know about this place from one day to the next. I guess the reason I didn't give higher stars is simply the customer service. I get the feeling that the generally failed filmmakers-turned-camera-shop employees (that LA is FILLED WITH), that had to be *purposely* ignoring me, were taking out their life's frustration on me. Sorry dudes, I know you can't all be Spielberg or Kaminski, but give me a break and ask if I need help after you see me standing there for 10 minutes starring at the damn cabinet. I got some good deals from ordering in the past so I'm not going to trash the place more but if I get treated like some broke film student one more time, I'm changing my review and I will also make a scene with whichever idiot in there decides he's too good to play the part of cashier.
