I meant to write a glowing review the last time I used LAVT but somehow dropped the ball - well, they just completed a new project for me so here it is! [[HIGHLIGHT]]LAVT are absolutely top notch on every count - communication, attention to detail, fair pricing, and above all quality of work.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have scanned photos, slides, and old Super 8 family movies for me and provided quality digital files; and they have made new digital copies of video from truly outdated and obscure sources (not just VHS, but now defunct professional grade "tapes" dating back to the 1990's - I am blanking on what they are called at the moment). They have also done special projects for me, including music editing when I decided to add soundtracks to my Super 8's - that was a bit more elaborate, but only because of the number of music cues that I provided with detailed notes. They also pressed a small run of blu rays for me for a fun video project, complete with pro-quality labels. Have come to these guys several times throughout the past couple years when I find tapes during cleaning sessions that I can't convert myself. They are very kind and approachable, as well as fast (usually 2-4 days) and accommodating, offering various formats for the end result. While cleaning out the garage, I found 10 VHS tapes from the 90's and immediately knew I had to come back to get them digitally converted. While looking at each tape, Dakota noticed that there was a significant amount of dust and mold (!) in majority of the tapes and would need to charge an extra fee to clean them, but no guarantee they would need to be converted if they could not be cleaned. FORTUNATELY, they were able to get cleaned and converted in only a few days. Needless to say, family members were brought to tears watching these priceless memories. read more

Wonderful service and communication! They gave us confidence in fixing our old VHS tape that ripped while it was being played on our VCR for the first time in a long time. It cost $25 to fix the ripped tape, which can be done quickly and the same day, but they found mold in our tape, so it cost an additional $50 to remove the mold overnight. I approached the team at Los Angeles Video Transfer Service with a box of 50+ 3" 8mm reels and another 50+ film slides that had belonged to my late grandparents. I came into possession of these ~70 year old family videos and photographs at Thanksgiving and was praying I could accomplish something useful with them by the time my family reconvened at Christmas. I met with Cristian and told him I had been entrusted with the only surviving footage of my grandparents and my uncles in their youth and that I did not want to be remembered as the family member who mishandled them. He did a quick visual sampling of the reels to assess their condition and was thorough in setting expectations and explaining my options (which included comparisons of sample work on the wall monitor and a much-appreciated, and very patient, translation of all relevant technical considerations so that a layperson like myself could understand). I had done enough research to feel confident I was getting competitive pricing and would avoid outright disaster but I could not have hoped for a better outcome than what the team at Los Angeles Video Transfer Service produced. I was given a realistic pricing estimate and timeline that they held themselves accountable to. They voluntarily checked in with me during the process and, per their suggestion, they received an amazon-shipped hard drive to preempt the media transfer which was especially convenient given where I am located and the scale of the data involved. To anyone contemplating a similar project, I adamantly endorse Los Angeles Video Transfer Service. Handing one-of-one, fragile physical media family heirlooms over to someone was a stressful proposition but this team clearly knew what they were doing and they respected what was personally at stake. My flammable box of war-time South Pacific wedding photos and post-war home videos is now safely preserved on a hard drive and personal cloud and has been edited and distributed to the entire family for future enjoyment. I have been in the professional video world for 30 years and I can't express how happy I was to find a small boutique shop with people who know what they are doing, they are quick and easy to work with and they are friendly! Best part - their prices are lower than any company I've ever used. I will make the trek to Pasadena for their services - they are well worth it!!! I would, however, suggest you call first or go to their website to make sure that they have the ability to work with the format you have. I found out that they do not have a 1" video tape machine. If there is one word to describe this place, it would be GENUINE L.A. Video Transfer is one of the few businesses in where I can say that they stand by their work and honestly care about the customer's satisfaction. I've recently stumbled upon a bunch of old family tapes and requested about 10 VHS tapes to be converted digitally and was looking for a video transfer service that was local rather than a mail in service as I prefer the face to face interactions, especially with projects like these. Cristian was the first person I spoke to getting this project started and he was very informative in explaining the entire process and provided me with various options in terms of how I want to go about it! He recommended that I get my tapes in QuickTime files as they are best suited for editing and will maintain as much of the tapes' data as possible. Suffice to say, this should have sounded like an any other job, however, these conversions proved more challenging than I originally anticipated. There were numerous issues with the state of the tapes (old and edited many times by my uncle) and conversion from static lines, darkened scenes, and pixelization from the transfer to file process that showed up on file compared to when I watched them on my VCR or when they saw it on their own screen. After the first conversion, I brought these issues to the their attention and this is where they really shined! Justin was extremely helpful and assured me that he and Dakota would do what they can to address the issues whether it is running the tapes through different machines to acquire different results as well as color correcting certain scenes to better match the VHS. In order to assist them with this, I did my best on my end to watch every video as well as timestamp and note every issue on each one to ensure they are provided all the information of everything that needed to be looked at in depth. Overall, this process took about 2-3 runs on most of the tapes and the end result is honestly top quality. This place definitely listens to your concerns and will do their absolute best in ensuring that you are happy with the end result! While my situation might not be reflective of most peoples' situations, I do advise in exercising patience in getting your media converted as I now have a better understanding of just how difficult and time consuming all of this can be especially after reviewing the footage multiple times myself! While there is so much more I have to say, I am very grateful to the team at L.A. Video Transfer at delivering excellent service and customer satisfaction. I have transferred quite a few home videos with them here and they have always been so transparent and wonderful with the process! They are quick with their transfers, Honest about the quality of the video and take excellent care of the videos! They also have offered to repair and clean some of the tapes i've brought in, and while it does cost a bit extra, It is worth it to be able to preserve these old tapes. I wanted to transfer some old VHS tapes to a more modern format of viewing. It was hard to find a location that I could take these tapes into and drop off myself. Incredible service! Your one-stop-shop. I brought them the gamut --- 8mm film, VHS, audio tapes, slides.....they digitized everything without a hitch. They provided me a quote up front, which was much appreciated. It changed a bit based on what I actually brought them, but they were always honest about how the fee would change. I'm very familiar with digital media as it's part of my job, so I didn't need much in the way of explaining when it comes to how my media would come to me, but, that said, they explained the process and the results perfectly. So very helpful. They worked with me on the deliverables, whether or not I wanted my slides color-corrected, if I wanted my film scanned a certain way, etc. etc. etc. And when there was video of a .....~questionable~.... nature (I think you know what I mean, right??) they were so professional. They called me, gently explained the situation, and separated the file for me. Plus they noted the physical reel so I could make sure I could put it in a separate place from the rest. I am very glad I found this place! I found an old VHS tape of when my father was on a Spanish-language talk/variety show in the late 80's stashed away in the catacombs of my parents house...never to be seen again. Or so I thought! It occurred to me to have it converted into dvd and digital files for our family viewing pleasure. I found LA Video Transfer Service here on Yelp after I tried another one. The first place was not going to do it in a timely manner and if I did want it in a timely manner, I could drop it off in Tarzana. Yeah...thanks, but no thanks. Last December, I brought in a Betacam SP tape and about 15 reels of 16mm film, all about twenty years old. These guys did a fantastic job with converting it to Apple ProRes 422. It was great to see my old films from college in a format where I could easily edit them on my Mac. Christian was extremely professional, and the price was right. Not only is the quality of work outstanding, so is the customer service. I had photos digitized from 30-year-old negatives and because of the service, went back to have old home movies digitized. One of the videos included my mom telling her life story 13 years ago. I told the employee, Christian, that my mom passed away two years ago and this was the most important video of the bunch. Cristian is great. When I found a box of old 8mm, mini-dvs and other antiquated video recording media, I'm thinking, "this is gonna cost a fortune to transfer and it's probably all shit"... there was no way to even view it, let alone know what to transfer. He had several suggestions and did his best to appraise whether this was junk that no one would want or cool video of me and friends and family from 30 to 40 years ago. He sent samples from the beginning of each reel/tape/loose piece of film so I could see what was on the beginning of each one and then we had another discussion and proceeded in a way that didn't break the bank. All via UPS and email. You just can't take that approach with a transfer place that always has someone else answering the phone and doing the work. Left me hanging for 2 weeks on an audio transfer because they are "busy with a big job". Mind you I wasn't in a hurry but I kept giving them a couple more days, a few times. At the end of the 2 weeks waiting, when they said they just started it, I was just tired of my job being pushed back so I cancelled and took my small job elsewhere.
