I have been working with Studio City Sound over the last 7 years on audio recording projects, and I am consistently pleased with the results. SCS has a studio complex containing individual studio rooms for a variety of needs, from recording a full-band to individual tracking of vocals or other instrumentation. It's a very professionally run operation with a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. They have a great selection of gear, including a huge library of software plug-ins, as well as vintage 'buttons-and-knobs' hardware, including a Neve 8068 console, U47 mic, and vintage outboard gear (Pultec, AMS, Urei, Empirical Labs, Tube-Tech, etc.). And they don't charge extra fees for specific equipment uses. Their Rolodex of studio musician contacts is vast. They coordinated sessions on their house drum kit for me with numerous music industry pros, including studio and touring drummers for Foo Fighters, Sting, Billy Joel and AC/DC. read more

If I could give this place 1000 stars, I would. I became familiar with this studio during backup vocal sessions for Tony Alonso. After a few sessions, I got to know Tom (GRAMMY AWARD WINNER) and all the other engineers and decided to come to Studio City Sound to record my own music. I have never been let down! Tom is extremely talented and knows what he's doing. But what really sets him aside from other studios and and engineers is his genuine honesty and kindness. After driving past this studio for years I decided to take a chance and record a project here. Why I waited all this time I have no idea. The studio has that unique lived in, made-for-hits vibe. A beautiful old Neve desk and perfect room acoustics for drums. All the vintage instruments you could need, along with a super cool owner/engineer with Tom Weir and, honestly, you can't go wrong. There are many reasons I love this place. I met the folks at Studio City Sound when they invited me to play on their live-broadcast SCAMfest, an ambitious streaming 3 day festival which - in addition to showcasing bands and singer-songwriters of many styles in the Los Angeles area - showed off the formidable tools they're wielding over there on Whitsett. High definition cameras and the wherewithal not only to stream a multi-camera edit to the web, but also with excellent sound matched up. The combo of HD and multiple camera angles plus studio-quality sound makes the possibilities already desirable and limitless. (Desirable and limitless!) Tom Weir is the ears and heart at the center of the studio. They have a large cast of interns clearly inspired by him in their eagerness and devotion and he is able to check in on the many studios to make sure things are going well while usually employed in one of the studios with his current project. While I wouldn't love SCS and keep coming back if they didn't do excellent work, the undeniable reason they put me over the edge of mere appreciation is that the entire studio is a family affair. Tom's sister Estelle is often running things with a smile in the office. Tom's nephew Chris is put to work operating a camera, making the lighting right or any number of jobs and more family ties abound. Mama Weir, a pianist, is clearly inspiration for the family. Speaking of the piano: I usually use the large studio in the back, due to there being a beautiful grand piano back there. More often than not I don't like how pianos are recorded or amplified. It's oddly difficult to capture the sound. Nevertheless, I always love the sound they get from this piano. I also come in to record vocals for various projects in the second big studio (I never remember the letters of the studios). I love the vibe of this room (especially since they put some effort into it in the past year) and am always happy with the sound I get in my headphones while recording. Tom's usually at the helm on the projects I come in for here. There are also 2 smaller studios, usually occupied by widely varied projects from internet-streaming experimental duos to hip hop acts.
