I enjoyed meeting with the staff for my first visit to Exceptional Dentistry. They seem to really care about your teeth health, not just another patient. The office is clean and updated, so they make it a safe environment. My lovely hygienist Brittany was so friendly, we started chatting before she started chatting about how I came to Louisville and what I do for work. Very good at explaining each step of the cleaning process with me. She was very knowledgeable and thorough in the cleaning, as I was there for over an hour. Had been going here for years. Made an appointment in March of this year for September for cleaning, waited 6 months took off work from the Covid unit I'm on only to show up the morning of for them to inform me they don't have a dentist in office and need to reschedule me for 2 more months out when I'm currently a travel nurse and it's almost impossible for me to plan an appointment for myself these days. I am usually a very understanding person but this isn't the first time they've done this to me. Not one single attempt to contact me was made before and I drove an hour almost to get there. Office staff was rude and completely unconcerned. So disappointed in my entire experience, look absolutely ANYWHERE else if you are needing a new dentist. Let me add- the dentist, Dr Carroll, wasn't just out for the day for something last minute - he was on vacation meaning they knew he would be gone and still never contacted me to reschedule when they had half a year to do so. read more

I've had multiple issues with insurance billing and customer care. Dr. Shoemaker and her dental hygienists have always provided great care. But unfortunately, it's been overridden by the administrative staff. I've gotten billed for 'out of network' services, sporadically, several times over the past 4 years. Furthermore, my interaction with billing staff has been less than acceptable. When bringing the issues to their attention, I've only been answered with defensiveness and an attitude. Rebecca, whom I dealt with (not latest issue but the issue before this) was the most unprofessional, rudest human being I've ever come in contact with. And actually gave me print outs of another patient's EOBs (HIPAA?) Please make sure to check, the day of your appointment, with a call to your insurance company to make sure they are still in network. They will most certainly tell you one thing at the office but bill you differently. read more

Very friendly staff. Hygienist did a very thorough job with my cleaning (especially since I have braces, it is a pain!) and my teeth felt great afterwards :) Dentist (I saw Dr. Shoemaker) was very nice, explained her findings and had a great bedside manner. Had my first visit to Exceptional Dentistry today and was very pleased. Very clean facility and the staff was more than friendly and helpful. My dental hygienist was very thorough and the entire cleaning was pretty painless. The Doctor was also very knowledgeable, thorough, and friendly. I went to Dr. Carroll to get veneers and had a great experience. I have been wanting veneers for over 10 years, but was worried about the process and whether or not they would turn out the way I had envisioned. Previously I had gotten braces and tried bleaching them numerous times, but I still wasn't happy with the way my teeth looked. So I decided to finally take the plunge and get veneers. I researched many offices around town, and was the most impressed with Dr. Carroll's before/after photos because they looked the most natural in my opinion. The whole process took only 3 appointments and I couldn't be happier with the way they turned out. There was no pain involved and all of the staff were so friendly, they made the process much more comfortable. If you're considering veneers, I would definitely recommend Dr. Carroll. He takes all of your concerns and customizes your smile to fit that. It's not a one-size-fits-all approach. I got exactly what I wanted and I am very pleased with everything! read more

Dr. Shoemaker is an entirely competent and skilled dentist and if I were rating her it would be a 5+. I had a professional experience with her. However, the dental hygienist was a different story. I would tell you her name, but she did not introduce herself. She did say she was new to the practice told me she has been with them 3-4 months. My appointment was at 4 PM, and I felt it was the end of the day and at first wondered how much this was coming into play. She managed to both offended and insulted me in less than 30 minutes. She started with X-rays and stumbled to get them taken she had problems and had to ask for help operating the X-ray equipment. While leaving me seating with a lead apron on top of me, with the thyroid collar hyperextending my neck. She then attempted to take photographs with a camera which the batteries were dead and she had to seek additional assistance in finding a replacement camera since she could not locate replacement batteries. She examined the X-rays and went on to tell me I had a cavity under a crown on my tooth. She went on with an oral exam and was the roughest I had every experienced. I stopped her at one point and told her I thought she was rough. She said tooth 30 was the worst she had ever seen. She went on to discuss bugs and bacteria and dental care and compared this to what she told me she could see on the X-rays. At this point, she asks what kind of a person I was, what was I looking for in a dental program. She asks if I was looking for someone to be proactive or just looking for someone to treat the pain. I told her several times that I do not have any pain at all nor have I had any pain and did not need treatment for pain. At this point, I had been made to feel that I was the worst patient she had ever seen. I determined that she had made some preconceived opinion of me and from this point on it was evident she felt I was wasting her time being there. Now I am an educated man who knows how to brush my teeth and floss which I do twice a day. I see the dentist every six months however due to finishing my last corporate job in Cincinnati and starting my next project in Louisville I am about three month behind on my appointment. The hygienist said there was no need to clean my teeth as it was just putting a band-aid on it. So no cleaning was performed. When Dr. Shoemaker came in and examined my teeth, she did note that tooth 30 is cracked, but she said there was no cavity under the crown and explained to the hygienist that it was not a cavity that she saw on the X-ray. She went on to recommend that I see a periodontist for some gum disease. Dr. Shoemaker went on to tell me that they would send my X-rays over to the periodontist and their office would be in contact. As the hygienist walked me out she asks the intake specialist " does he even have insurance?" to which she responded yes he does. I am a person who has a history of smoking but, quit over 20 years ago. I also grind my teeth at night and have a considerable amount of job stress. I do take medication for high blood pressure, and I have a genetic component. I understand all these factors can contribute to periodontal disease. What I am unable to wrap my head around is that I should be treated as a second class citizen for having periodontal disease by an incompetent hygienist. read more
