Think Floyd's Barbershop from 'The Andy Griffith Show'. That isn't necesarilly a bad thing, though. They offer a very cheap haircut. Some would say you get what you pay for, but then again, maybe a fancy haircut isn't your thing, anyway. They do fine by me. Admittedly, with what little hair I have left, I just have him run the 1/4" clipper over my head until it's even. But he does it very well. Now, my son feels a little different about old Ed. He's not from around here. He stopped in one day and asked for a haircut known as a 'Fade'. Old Ed said to him "You're not from around here, are you"? (No joke). "This ain't a fancy salon. We give a man's haircut here. What you're describing is a flat top." Then old Ed gave my son the Benton Special. That'd be the same haircut he gives to roughly 85% of the men (and I suspect, most women as well) who come into Cole's Barber Shop. It wasn't close to a 'Fade'. My son was not impressed. But he did blend in nicely that weekend. Now he makes sure he gets his haircut before he comes to visit. As for me, I still let Old Ed run his clippers over my head once a month, and he still doesn't recognize me when I come in. I guess it takes a few years to become a regular. I keep waiting to see Otis and little Opie playing checkers each time I go, but so far, no luck. I'll give it time.

Mack has done a great job setting the place up to feel like a classic barbershop. You can tell he takes pride in his work. I went there for the first time in May after trying several barbers in the Scranton area and feeling disappointed every time. I needed to find a good barber before my wedding in June and this was my last chance. I've never had a better experience anywhere. I showed Mack a picture my (then) fiance had picked out and he went to work. I've never felt so confident leaving the barber shop before. I didn't even have to send her a picture to know it was perfect. Honestly, I'll never go anywhere else for a cut as long as I'm in NEPA. By far the most comfortable, friendly barber shop in the area.
