Unfortunately, when I visited, the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site was closed due to Covid. As a result, I was only able to check it out from the outside. After parking in their parking lot, we walked around the exterior. There were a few placards to read. And we peaked through the windows to see what we could see inside. I'd definitely like to return one day and get the full experience! Within walking distance from Philipse Manor Hall is a park and several restaurants.

There are many displays that you can play around. We didn't think we would spend an hour here. We thought, maybe 20 minutes at most. If you love old historical building and its interiors, this one might not for you because the house itself now is just a shell. But if you like history from different perspectives, you'll love this place. The stories here balance between Munsee tribes, slaves and Philipse's family. The staff here were very friendly, polite, and helpful. Admission $6. Oh and if you collect NPS passport stamp cancellations, this place is part of Hudson Valley NHA passport program.

I really enjoy visiting historical houses and seeing how people lived back and in time. The cottage is in surprisingly good condition. It was built in 1812 and is a NYC landmark. We really enjoyed the guided tour and learning more details about Poe's life. Poe rented the house in 1846 and lived there with his wife Virginia, who was dying of tuberculosis. She died in the cottage, and they had the actual bed where she passed away. Roger, the guide, was extremely knowledgeable and a great narrator. They currently have a free Spring Poetry seminar available at the cottage.

It's a tiny house and if there is a tour going on you can either join in or wait in the gift area, read some Poe or just stare out of the window imagining yesteryear. Our docent was full of enthusiasm and we left with Annabel Lee still on our lips. "But we loved with a love that was more than love, I and my Annabel Lee".

This peaceful hideaway, located just west of Cherry Hill and east of the 72nd Street and Central Park West entrance, is ideal for quiet reflections and special celebrations. Originally known as the Cherry Hill Boat Landing, the cove was renamed after Robert F. Wagner, a former New York City Mayor who played a significant role in reforming city politics in the 1950s. In its early years, it functioned as one of the many docks where passengers could board rowboats to travel to other points on The Lake.

A spaghetti like graphic of different colored lines, sometimes running parallel to each other, sometimes crisscrossing each other like a spider web on LSD. So how do train lines manage all that switching and changes of direction without crashing into other trains? It's all computer driven today, but way back in the day things were done manually by throwing huge levers in a Switch Tower, and you can learn all about it and see the 100+ year old equipment in this very cool free museum. The museum is on three stories, and you have to walk up a metal staircase all the way to the top because that's where the tour starts. Our guide on the 3rd floor was John and he was fantastic. We saw the gigantic old switches, and he did a great job explaining the technology of the day and how it changed over the years. Next, we walked down to the second floor where Joe took over and he explained the switches and system in deeper detail. Finally, we walked down to the gift shop on the first floor with all sorts of railroad memorabilia, mugs, and hats are available for sale. John and Joe are volunteers, and their love of trains was quite evident. If you like learning about how mechanical things work, or you have a train buff in your family, you really can't go wrong with a visit to this niche museum.

I had the opportunity to visit this Memorial on Staten Island a few years ago. It was a very moving…read moreexperience. The display is so creative and beautiful. It really provides a special tribute. This is a nice place where family and friends can come to pay their respects. I found myself reading the names and reflecting on that day. I don't like to think about my personal experience that day. I was happy to visit this Memorial. I was also happy I was visiting Staten Island that day for another happier event. I did take a couple photos to preserve my Memory of this fine structure.

How much does one know about the history of the Revolutionary War in the Hudson Valley?…read more Like a well-written mystery novel, the Hudson Valley unfolds its secrets, luring history buffs for good reason. The American Revolution played out along the Hudson's banks--from the first riots protesting the British Quartering Act on Golden Hill in Lower Manhattan to the chaining of the Hudson and Benedict Arnold's attempted betrayal of West Point in the Highlands. Just north of the New Jersey border, Tappan, derived from a Lenape Indian word thought to mean "cold water," has the oldest surviving building in Rockland County. The DeWint House, owned by Patriot Johannes DeWint, holds a special place in American history as it served as a temporary headquarters for George Washington during the American Revolution. Washington was a guest of the house twice in 1780 and twice in 1783. It was here that Washington signed the death warrant of British Major John Andre, a spy who conspired with American General Benedict Arnold to betray West Point. Upon arrival as first-timers yesterday, my partner and I were the only vehicle in the spacious parking lot. The house built using brick and indigenous stone is a prime example of Hudson Valley Dutch Colonial architecture, showcasing the unique blend of Dutch and American styles that were prevalent during the colonial period. The house's bottom floor (the top floor is off-limits) houses the North and South Rooms. The South Room was where Washington and his staff resided. The North Room was where work was done, especially with regard to the trial and execution of Andre. The rooms are both open to the public for viewing through glass partitions. Period furniture, bedding, and desks are among the items one sees. An adjacent 19th-century carriage house contains displays of artifacts uncovered at the site during archaeological digs. A 15-minute video about the historic site can be seen, and an over 150-year-old grandfather clock keeps the correct time. So much history happened in this spot that changed this country forever. The battery has a great garden, opens laws, a view of the Statue of Liberty, a statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano, walking and bike paths and a restaurant. This is a great place to go take a walk, sit and relax or whatever you do when you escape the city.
