We have been trying to get our son help since 2020, thanks to Covid. And when Sheri is on the spot, she will lie, and turn it back around on the vulnerable family who is desperately looking for help. Not to worry Sheri, you are in good company with your obvious inability to handle to mass need for therapy for our children. I had a great experience here as part of their immersive cane training program. The facilities are…read morephenomenal, and the staff is above and beyond helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The food was wonderful, and they accommodated any need. I needed cane training, and I'm so glad I was able to participate in this program. Before going, I was fairly certain I was only interested in cane training and not in a potential future guide dog. However, GDB offers a guide dog experience to those in the cane training program, and I was glad to have the opportunity to compare traveling by cane and traveling with a guide dog. I found out guide dogs can be a big help in identifying obstacles at or near head level, which is an issue for me given my pattern of vision loss. So, though I was not entertaining the idea of possibly working with a guide dog at the outset, I became open to and curious about it through this great experience. I learned so much in just 5 days, I'm still stunned. I was provided with a report of my training and specific recommendations for next steps. I received it about a week after the training concluded. It was quite specific to my needs, and nearly two months later I continue to follow up on it. A month after training ended I also had a follow up meeting over the phone, which allowed me to clarify anything I had run into concerning cane travel since returning home. A wonderful experience! I highly recommend the program to those looking to build cane skills while also having an eye to possibly working with a guide dog in the future. Many thanks to all who make this program possible.

Good: hanging out with my foster youth for the past 2 years has been super fun, meaningful, and…read moreinspiring. I feel grateful to play a significant role in their learning, social and emotional growth, and understanding of healthy relationships. The training is challenging in a good way and thorough. Participating and advocating in court has been interesting. Nurturing a cooperative and collaborative connection with the foster kin has been good all around. Bad: The time spent on writing and editing court reports with micromanaging supervisors is exhausting. Logging activities and doing administrative tasks is tedious. The CASA organization is not there for their own CASA volunteers. They do not have your back. I have donated thousands of dollars and tons of time, yet CASA would rather "collaborate" with cronies than support you. They threw me under the bus when I called out my foster youth's school for denying them access (they have a disability). It was shocking, upsetting, and discouraging. Honestly I felt I was being punished for being an "upstander". I could go on, but suffice to say 90% of donations go to the bloated staff. They in turn are compelled to dig up work for themselves. Hassling the volunteers seems to be one of their work responsibilities. I would prefer to carry on with my foster youth, but I don't feel it is healthy to allow myself to be a door mat. Keep in mind, we don't get paid. We volunteer to be a caring compassionate support for foster youth, not a step-n-fetch for CASA administrators. If you decide to become a CASA, enjoy the experience of making a difference in a foster youth's life, and at the same time submit to your supervisor's will otherwise they will give you no peace.

After the time, money and sacrifice I made, I was shocked to have been unsupported by the CASA staff (from the incompetent case worker to the highest level, Renee -who is no longer there). I still have the voicemails saved from the father to this day - just in case. My husband and I started on as CASAs together at the same time. He continued on as a CASA with his child but I decided not to take another case again with this organization. He is still involved with his CASA youth, gives the family money and holiday gifts and supports the education of his youth - years later. He enjoyed working with his child but he also agreed the staff were pretty incompetent on his case. One of my closest childhood friends is the CEO of a much larger CASA organization in Southern California and the practices at her organization sound way much more professional than what goes on at the SF organization. I hate to leave a review discouraging volunteers from such a great cause but I should be honest about what happened. It was alarming and depressing. I was clearing out my old phone messages and found the texts again from Casa and the father the other day and decided I should finally write this review. The organization treated me like crap and it still hurts me to this day. Luckily there are so many great orgs to work with in SF so I moved on to greener pastures.

Couple of months go by with no word whatsoever, so I re-contact them and end up giving information being told that I would be referred and everything would be good and they would help me out and nothing absolutely nothing for months!!! I'm not gonna chase these people down. Clearly they don't have their act together. Clearly their clients are not their priority when you know it months and months go by again and I get a follow up call three times they don't leave a message when they do leave a message. I can barely understand it and they wanna know if I'm still interested in helping me. Come on people...really???

Community service was a good way for me to get to know my new home: SF's history, its…read moreneighborhoods and their cultures, and of course the issues and needs present in the community. I've been a ROCK volunteer for a year now, and not only do I have a greater appreciation for this city, but I've also found a family in the kids, staff, and volunteers that I've met through ROCK. I'm involved in ROCK's Saturday Skill Drills, 6-week sports sessions (3 sessions per year) for elementary-school kids. The kids are extremely energetic and enthusiastic for a Saturday morning, but it's a rude awakening that's so much fun--and a welcome change of pace from hanging out with boring adults! There are also weekend programs geared towards middle-school and high-school students, as well an elementary after-school program, so there are plenty of chances to share your talents and lend a hand. Visitacion Valley has received some careless and ignorant media attention, and I wish more people could see what a vibrant community it really is. There's a quote from Daniel Burnham that goes, "To love one's city and have a part in its advancement and improvement is the highest privilege and duty of a citizen." I want to encourage fellow SF citizens to consider joining a remarkable grassroots effort that celebrates, protects, and empowers the next generation of this neighborhood (a neighborhood that Newsom & Co. are choosing to ignore). Its awesome because you get to do different outdoor activities like…read moremountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, habitat restoration (if you choose the middle school program) while spending time with kids that live in the visitation valley on saturdays. Most of the volunteers are in the mid 20's - mid 30's age range, which is nice. They also totally understand if you can't commit to going every saturday in the 6 week sessions they offer 3x/year, just as long as you can go to at least half of them.
