Expertec always makes it easy for me when I go in. I usually only do oil changes there so I'm not sure how they are with other mechanical problems, but with oil changes, they are fantastic. They also check problems and questions you may have for free. One of the employees even rode with me to figure out what the problem was with my car. I would recommend going here for an oil change over any other place in Hood River 100%. Cheap but reliable. read more

Sorry previous reviewer, Expertec demonstrates neither integrity or honesty. As a woman bringing a car to a mechanic, I expect to get a little bit of run around, that's why I am upfront about my problem(s) and my expectations. I am new to town and looking for a mechanic; this is not them. My first problem with them started when the manager tried to hint strongly that my vehicle may have an issue unrelated to what I brought the car in for (that I happen to know is quite expensive in man-hours and I know is common to my make/model--instantly shady), that my car currently had no symptoms for. Expertec then decided to further take advantage of me by clearly ignoring my straightforward repair request and performing an unnecessary additional 2 hour diagnostic on my vehicle, charging me the full hourly price for merely hooking my car up to a code-reader. I have the $45 scanner at home: I am capable of doing an internet search and being familiar with an engine. It was entirely unnecessary for them to need 2 hours of diagnostic work (doing what? It doesn't take two hours to run codes!)--especially without informing me prior--to determine the same problem I came in asking to have fixed. They also did not have common parts in stock and needed to keep my car overnight for the undemanding repair ($20 engine thermostat). When they called with the "prognosis" of my initial problem, they informed me they hadn't even looked at my second request (an issue with the electronics module in the door). Had I let them continue with my vehicle, they wouldn't have identified my second issue until the following day--where they (again) wouldn't have had the part in stock and would need to keep my vehicle yet a third day. Expertec, you come off shady, unprofessional, and willing to take advantage of the well-intentioned. This is not how you do business in a small town. They messed up my friend's car. I wouldn't go there if it was the last place on earth. They are completely incompetent.

This is a difficult review to write, and I think it is only fair to give them the 'satisfactory' 3 stars because they did fix the problem. I just wish they had cared a little bit about our situation. I would like to point out that the 3 star "A-OK" tag is a bit presumptuous... I really mean: "eh, it could have been worse." My wife and I (and our enormous diesel truck) were stranded on the side of I-84 between Cascade Locks and Hood River, OR. We had to get towed, and our warranty directed us to Expertec (but only because it is used to be a Ford Garage, and the address is the same). Did I mention this happened at 3:30pm on July 3rd? We called the garage to say we were coming in. They didn't seem to care. They were busy and probably wouldn't get to our truck that night. They were also close on the July 4th, so it would be sitting there until Friday. I knew the fuel delivery system was to blame, but I didn't know if it was a clogged filter, a bad pump, or something else. At home, my dad and I could have probably fixed it in a couple of hours. I hoped the garage would be as good. Did I mention that we were on vacation from Centralia, WA, and my wife had to be back at work the next day? Yeah, they didn't seem to care. You would think that they might try to squeeze us in front of an oil change or two, since we were stranded far from home (like how the ER cares more about a heart attack then a sprained ankle) but they had little to no sympathy for our situation. We had to get a rental car to get back for work. The truck sat in the lot until Friday. No one ever called to say they were working on it so we called to find out what they knew. They knew nothing. We called again on Monday. They said they thought it was a bad fuel pump and had to order a new one. We called on Tuesday. They said they put in the fuel pump but needed to cold start it the next morning to make sure that was it. We called again on Wednesday, and they said it was ready to be picked up. Really? Thanks for the call! So I'm not mad about any normal garage nonsense or them trying to get me to fix things that aren't broken. They fixed the problem and the truck has been fine ever since. I am just really mad that they didn't seem to care we were in the situation we were in and that they never called to tell us what was going on. Our warranty covered the whole repair, but not the rental car (because the garage only actually recorded two hours of labor) so we were stuck with a huge rental car bill for the week our truck sat in their lot for two hours of actual work - plus the fuel cost of driving to and from the garage (150 miles one way) Also, there was a woman in the office the day we came in to get the truck who just found out her car had been sitting in their lot for a week because they "forgot to look at it." It was her third attempt to get them to work on her car, and she was not a happy customer... read more

A little bit of back story. We took our 80s Vanagon there at the request of a family interested in buying it. They said they would cover the $75 pre-purchase inspection fee. Expertec found a couple of things needing repair. That isn't the problem. My complaint is how they treated us, and the information they gave to the prospective buyers. I had a 10 am appointment, they said it would be done shortly after lunch. They called around 4pm saying it was done, I'd have to be there by 5 when they close. I asked over the phone if they had found anything, he listed off a few things - I had a horrible time hearing him so I thought I'd just get the paperwork when I picked it up and read it then. I went in to pick it up and asked if they had paperwork for it and Gordon the owner, told me no, not unless I wanted to pay the $75 fee to have them print it up. Really? I told him it would be difficult for me since they buyers would have information, they may want to negotiate with this info but I wouldn't know what they're talking about. He then said condescendingly "well it was what I told you on the phone" . I told him I couldn't hear him on the phone so if he wouldn't mind listing those things again I'd appreciate it. As if it was such a burden for him, he listed the concerns off to me and I quickly wrote them down. Later in the day, I'm in contact with the buyers, and they tell me a more detailed description of the issues, and tell me Expertec said to "expect eminent problems that would be $4k-$5k for parts and labor" and that one of the parts has been discontinued. I immediately took our van to our personal mechanic and relayed Expertec's information on to him. He agreed with the places that needed repair but that the cost of repairs Expertec quoted were completely extreme, and saying to expect eminent problems was over the top. All that being said, having our trusted mechanic fix the issues for around $1000 for parts and labor, including the so-called discontinued part. Long story short, I would never recommend Expertec to anyone. Dishonest money grubbers! read more

I dislike writing bad reviews... but I would like to save others the horrors of spending $1000+ on their cars... To drive away with new issues. "Sure we can fix the antifreeze leak, the window motors, and stop the leak in your floorboards". They fixed the antifreeze, but now the AC makes a shocking noise, for some reason, my fog light was broken off and nestled back in to look like nothing happened... And the window motor... one works great, the other one... Crap. Also, they failed to clean up a messy sticky residue... which was all over the car doors when I got in my car. I was coming from work to pick up my car, having paid by credit card, so I got there after they were closed.... Tried to make an appointment to get their little mishaps checked out, they were slammed for a week out, and it wouldn't be a free or even discounted fix, even though they were new issues that hadn't been there before. Also a bit of sneaky dishonesty where women are the concerned customers. There is one guy there who seems decent, but that doesn't make up for the outrageous costs of their "repairs". Next time I'll wait two weeks for my honest mechanic at Taylor Automotive. read more

Went with some trepidation after the negative reviews, but thought I'd give the place a shot for a standard oil change. Pros: Service was done quickly, and apparently well, when I went through and checked on everything afterwords. I appreciated that they sprayed some sealant on the battery terminals. The price was very fair. Excellent cookies in office. I ate too many :) Cons: At that price, I don't know what brand of oil they put in, or even the weight and viscosity. None of this was mentioned, nor was I asked for my preference. I have a check engine light on, which was there previously. I was expecting them to at least notice and comment on it, but it was ignored. On the bulletin board in the front office there is some anti-yelp propaganda, which to me seemed paranoid and offensive. I think it is excellent that consumers can review businesses and warn each other about the bad ones so easily. Its good for the consumer, its good for competition, and I frankly don't see a problem. If this 4 star review gets deleted, as was claimed would happen in that posting on the their wall, I guess that will mean there is some ring of truth to it. At least for a simple oil change, they did just fine for me. read more

You guys are the greatest! "Check Engine" light on. 3000 miles from home on our 40th anniversary honeymoon redo. You could have taken us for a bundle. Instead, your computer guy suggested that we try changing our motor oil (a top synthetic recently installed). We did (with the synthetic recommended for our Highlander), and it worked! I too, think Expertec to be shady. First, I took my car to Les Schwab about a belt problem, they informed me that they don't do belts, but the alternator belt is a cheap 10 minute job, 'just have to loosen two bolts'. So, I called Napa and priced the correct belt for my make and model of car $ 13 dollars and change. Called Expertec, gave them ALL the correct info, Belt $26- $36 and an hour for labor. I told the owner/manager that I spoke to others (L.S. and Napa) he said it must of been for the cheap after market belt so...I called the dealer. $ 15 dollars and change. So, EXPERTEC IS A RIP OFF!!!! Don't trust them with your auto. read more

I have called 4 times the past 2 days to talk to them, each time getting their voice-mail, leaving 2 messages and not getting a call back. Called once and got through, only to get put on hold for 8 minutes before hanging up.......guess if you go in there it might be okay, which is what I was going to do, but this experience changed my mind..... read more

Gordon and his staff at Expertec have been friendly, supportive, and helpful the multiple times I have used their services for my Subaru Outback, as well as my dads. They are honest and always walk me through the services that will need to be done. I have never felt like they were trying to take advantage of me or tried to get money that wasn't necessary to fix the problem at hand. Auto repairs are always expensive, and I feel like they have to be somewhat competitive to survive as a business. read more
