I went in for a cut and a color and it turned out amazing! My hair was already super long and already bleached but it was uneven so I wanted them to do a retouch. Found this little gem entirely by accident - being peeved at I5 south brake lights, I escaped up the hill....glancing at my rearview mirror I spotted a Yeti. Wait, that's me. Find wax on/off now. I looked up while on Beacon and there was Expo behind B of A. I sauntered into a hive of busy people buffing, cutting and painting...it took a minute to get noticed. But when that magic moment happened, there was a genuine smile + polite gesture to wait on the pleather couch. I sat and enjoyed Sunset and within minutes I was on the paper covered tableau with a quiet student lulling me to relaxation, albeit ripping skin and hair out of my face. She gently handed me a little mirror and was amazed at the shaping she managed. Efficiency was key, and her method was as good, or better, than the $35 Belltown version. When I got to the counter, they advised me it was 5 bucks :D They did need to cross the street with my credit card (the owner has a 'legit' salon there) Signed my slip, tipped double, and drove away into faster traffic with a snarkier looking annoyed right eyebrow raise. I've already been back for de-furring of the brows since my initial finding, and will continue to patronize this pleasant Beacon Hill spot. read more

Welp, I finally ound a go-to manipedi place- too bad it's in Seattle! The gals here are all students of the beauty school, but I saw no difference in my manipedi versus 'full fledged salons'. They were more attentive, sweet, and talkative than any other artists I've dealt with anywhere, and at a fraction of the price. $15 for a manipedi? Yes, please! My friend got her eyebrows waxed- that was $6 and they did a nice job. I'll stop by anytime I'm in town. read more

Today I went in for the first time and decided to give it a shot, and I am very pleased with the results! Though I was given the chance to get a professional cut for $30, I decided to pay $10 and see what happens with a student. It can be very nerve racking to trust your hair to someone that has no experience, but the lady that did my hair was very careful and took her time to get it right. The teacher was there the whole time guiding her, and they made sure I was happy with what was going on and how it was looking. I was able to put in put and tell them exactly how I like it. I got my hair cut and dyed from the owners, Paul and Phuong. I showed them a picture of what I exactly wanted and got it! My hair went from dead black hair to a beautiful brown/blonde balayage! Only 2 stars because I don't want to punish the student and it's not the students fault she was POORLY trained otherwise I'd say ONE star. I was cut 3 times during my pedicure and she kept putting this blue liquid on it in hopes of stopping the bleeding. This all happened because she forgot an important step... Cuticle softener! Ouch. She was pushing my poor cuticles way down to the point of pain and THEN cut me while trying to "clean it up" . After many successful attempts to stop the bleeding (yes, it was cut that badly) she said "wow, you must have really sensitive skin!' (I was in disbelief....) The worst part was she told me she just received certification from the state and had to fulfill 200 more hours. I hope those hours will help her so that others can avoid this. I had planned on getting a manicure too but made up an excuse that I had a text come in and had to go so I didn't have to subject my fingers to the same pain as my poor toes:( THEN...the instructor came downstairs to perhaps, oh I don't know... Check the work maybe? Actually. it was just to finish my polish so that the student could move onto the haircut client, who'd been waiting there for a 1/2 hour watching me wince and make comments about bleeding. She was a brave one! I wouldn't have stayed! The messed up thing is that the instructor CLEARLY had to have seen the evidence of the poorly executed pedicure (dried bloody cuticles) while she was painting my toes but said NOTHING and also would've forgotten the clear base coat on the second foot had I not reminded her and then..... The icing on the cake.... I asked how much and she said TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS! What? My regular place that I couldn't get into that day is $17! How is a bad student pedicure and a non attentive instructor worth $25? I get it... First world problems, I know but do yourself a huge favor and don't come here. read more

I came here about a week ago to get a manicure because I recently took off my acrylics and my nails became weak and very fragile. A student name Chika made my nails look brand new and healthy while they are still recovering. And it was only $7, what a steal ! I recommend this place not only for their service but for anyone who wants to join Expo because they are very flexible and make sure you are in good hands. After moving to Seattle this year I decided I wanted a drastic hip, fun change to my old college hairstyle. I went to a swanky downtown salon (3 times) and spent almost $300, only to walk away with an orange mom bob. After a month of relentless whining and lots of hats, a friend from work mentioned he was in hair school at Expo Beauty Institute. He sent me a ton of hairstyles and colors trying to pinpoint exactly what it was I wanted. We found a picture of the perfect haircut and color and set off to make it happen. Alfonso along with his instructor Paul razored and shaped my hair into the perfect summer cut. I could feel the excitement from all the students learning and watching this huge change take place. Alfonso took extra care to get every piece of my hair just right to the extent of testing different toners to see which color I preferred. $67 later my hair looks more amazing than I was even hoping for. The ambition to start a new career heeds more effort to go over the top to give the client exactly what they want. Looking back on how big of a change we made I realize it was probably a bit risky to go to a school, but I am so glad I did. So yes, this is a school, but the prices pretty accurately reflect that. I got a good solid haircut for just $6!!! I was able to get in and out in about 30 minutes, and the person who cut my hair was really nice. It was clear she was still learning the routines of cutting hair, and she asked her instructor about a couple of things, but all in all, it turned out great! Short Version: WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!! Longer Version: I live by the beauty school, drive by it all the time and thought I would stop in since I had some free time without my daughter. I walked in and was instantly greeted by a student doing someone's hair. Finally someone else came down who seemed to be the teacher and took over the clients hair and asked me what I would like. I wanted a shellac manicure, I sat down in the seat while the student was preparing the stuff she needed while I picked a color. I wanted this pretty Christmas Sparkly Red polish. The student begin to do my nails, very sweet girl, she's the only reason this place deserves any stars. It was quite clear she was a student, she was slow, doing an okay job but my thoughts where as long as the polish looks good everything else is fine. We finally got to the shellac part, I needed to ask to put my coat on because it was freezing in there-however it is winter in Seattle.. When I put the coat on my nails caught fuzz on them from the shellac clearly not being dry? It's shellac, when's that ever an issue. Instead of just clearing off my nails she start to pick it off and paints over it! Yes this is where I should've said something but I felt bad I guess. My nails look a mess but I was like okay cheap manicure I suppose I can get them fixed before I go on my trip next week. She gets to the "red" and it's quite clear it's a pink/orangish/red sparkle... Not the red that their pallets showed. So I asked her to layer it two more times because maybe that would make it darker.. Negative. Looking at my dad nails I asked how much longer she had in school and she admitted she had passed the nail portion and just working on the hair! WTF, how did she possibly pass the nail portion. This cannot seriously be a teaching school!?!! So I get done an ready to pay and it's $25! That's how much I pay and my normal place, which does a wonderful job ALWAYS. They even do my daughters for $5 when she comes. They're on Capitol Hill by Deep Roots, just can't think of the name. Like I said, if it wasn't for how sweet she was I'd give Zero stars. This place is the worst!! The students are not properly being taught how to provide these services. It's been 3 days and 4 of my nails are already chipping. read more

I live just a few blocks away and have passed many times on the way to the grocery store. I had the day off work and wanted my nails cleaned up for an event. I walked over and had a delightful experience! The woman who gave my manicure was incredibly professional and great to chat with. My nail shape looks great and the paint job was nice considering I'm pretty good at chipping or smudging my nails almost immediately. I couldn't believe when she told me is was $6. I tipped that as well and don't think I'll ever paint my own nails again. I am looking forward to continuing to support this school. read more

I had a pedicure here last week. The pedicure was good. Very inexpensive and the student technician did a great job. Ive recommended it to a few friends who are on a budget. Its not a fancy schmancy spa experience, but let me tell you, I wanted to fall asleep during my service, so they are A Ok in my book. I will probably go back soon. read more

Got a student french mani here for prom for $9. Not bad for 9 dollars, though one person worked on my left hand and another person worked on my right hand. The person who did my left hand definitely did a better job, so I'd say if you're to come here, make sure you ask for the young Asian woman with glasses (forgot to ask for her name). The nails on my right hand have slight white streaks because the woman working on them didn't take take off the white nail polish well enough. My nails also aren't completely smooth. The professional worked on my right hand too (so three people total), so I'm disappointed it seemed she didn't care enough to notice the bad job the student before did. When I went in, I had to wait for the student to get to the salon before I could start on my nails. I've never had my nails done before but I think I can make a safe assumption that you'd get a lot better "pampering" experience at a different place. Bottom line, nails weren't perfect but I'm still satisfied considering the price and the fact that I only needed my nails to look decent for one night. read more

Super friendly staff and I got a decent pedicure. It took longer since the work is done by students. The nail polish selection is pretty dismal- cheap brands and not a lot of colors to choose from. Also for a student pedicure $25 is not really any cheaper than other places that are faster with better polish. I might go back just because they were so nice and in my neighborhood, but Princess Nails is still my favorite pedi in Seattle. read more

Okay, keep in mind that is this a SCHOOL so don't expect cucumber water upon your arrival or any great fanfare. You get what you pay for and that is having a student or two do your services for more than half the regular price. I am new in town and thought I would give them a try. Things were getting a little jungle-E in the lady bits department and I am low on cash. I was assigned two students. The place was clean enough, but definitely got the feel it was a school-no frills or hot pad on the massage table for the waxing, but that's okay. The overall task took twice as long as usual but I had the time and the two students were so considerate and careful not to "hurt me"...c'mon a Brazilian wax requires a wee bit of pain when done right. Turns out these gals did a fab job. Even did the once over with the tweezers after to get the strays. Couldn't help but give a good tip. Overall a pleasant experience. Hubby is happy so I will be back. May even try some of their other services as well. read more

I have been coming here for a few years, and have always been delighted with the results and the service. The owners have recently spruced up the place with better pedicure sinks and new towels, and the pedicures have gone up from $11 to $15 (mani/pedi for $20). Still a terrific deal! The students are sweet, conscientious, and eager to please. Some of them have limited English skills. But if that isn't a problem for you, save yourself a bunch of money, get a great manicure or pedicure, and help these students out! They need a certain number of hours to graduate, and they are grateful for the opportunity to serve you. read more

My girlfriend gets her nails done every other week and she is impressed how thorough the students are. They make great relationships with their customers and take pride in what they do.
