I was visiting Seattle and decided to come to this salon because I heard really good reviews online and on tiktok, honestly, worst mistake. Obviously, I understand it is a beauty school and the people there are students but as you walk in there is a sign that states something to the effect of all students are being supervised by the licensed stylist. This could not be further off. I asked for a blowout, she applied product incorrectly and was then corrected by a fellow student- by the way my hair was completely weighed down by this product and i'm not even entirely sure it had heat protectant. I have long and thick hair but i get blowouts pretty regularly and never faced a problem, she started attempting with her round brush and got the brush tangled in my hair several times. She eventually told me my hair needed a cut at the ends bc it thins out -- i have layers so of course it thins it. I did not come in for a cut and again never faced this issue before. I respectfully declined the haircut and she reattempted, eventually said she does not think it will come out right. After already being frustrated by this, I just asked her to do blowdry and straighten because how could you mess that up. She proceeded to rough dry my hair and then suggest to curl my hair, at this point, I just wanted her to do something she was confident in doing because blow drying certainly was not it. Mind you, the entire time there was minimal to no supervision from the head beautician. While my hair was still wet she began curling it, i literally heard the crunch. I asked her "is my hair still wet" and she said "yeah a bit." After a prolonger period of time and much frustration, i asked if she could get some help in finishing my hair because it was taking forever. Her colleague assisted and advised her to finish drying my hair because it was still too wet. After way too much product and a terrible experience later, we finally finished. I paid and wanted to leave as soon as possible. I understand students still learning but completely drying someone's hair prior to using heat is common sense. Additionally, there was literally no superivison in sight. I would literally never recommend this place, it was the worst experience. After posting this review on google, the owner responded saying my review was not true and she was supervising. While she was the one who washed my hair which was the only good part by the way, the remainder of the experience went as I stated above. So affordable. This hidden gem in the international district is a one stop shop for all beauty needs. The people and energy of the establishment are welcoming and positive. My daughter has curly hair, which can be a challenge for a lot of stylists but we were blessed to get Warren and he nailed it! Kim, the owner, is beautiful and so engaged throughout the treatment. Nice people. Not super slow. However, 1) the price is $12, not $10 as advertised on the website and 2) I asked for 3-4" off and lost 12". My hair was at my waist and now is at my clavicle. That's a HUGE discrepancy and years of growth lost. The cut overall was fine though. I found this place from a Craigslist and (sounds sketchy, I know), but I'm glad I did! I offered to be a model for eyelash extensions, and I'm very pleased by the work Nui did! Since this is a school, it took a bit longer (3 hours) than it would at a professional salon, but I'm glad she took her time! Is seems like they are making an effort to really teach their students well and to pay attention to detail! When I was getting my eyelashes done, another student even let me borrow her phone charger! During the service, there were quite a few people coming in and out, which is expected from a school, but a suggestion for improvement would be to have the students go into a different room if they were going to be socializing, so it wouldn't be too loud! Summary: After over two hours in the chair, I left with a haircut that was lopsided and uneven all the way around. I ended up paying $90 at a high-end salon to get it fixed. Next time I'll just get a $50 haircut somewhere normal. I came here to get a good deal on a simple haircut. It is a beauty school, so the services are provided by students. That means that the service may take a bit longer, you might have more than one student working on you, and they may receive help or instructions while working with you. That's all OK by me. It's what I'm willing to exchange for a cheaper haircut. I was even willing to accept that the haircut may not be exactly what I asked for - like, maybe they would have to go shorter or something if they made a mistake. Despite having these lenient expectations, I was ultimately dissatisfied with my haircut. After over two hours in the chair, I left with a haircut that was lopsided and uneven all the way around. It was also longer than what I asked for, and they put in terrible layers when I specifically asked for no layers. In the end, the instructor said to me "he cut it longer on one side, so just part your hair on this side." Excuse me? No, I want to part my hair in the middle, as I mentioned several times during my haircut. The website says that experienced students will be cutting your hair, but I didn't feel like they were experienced enough, and the instructors didn't ensure the final quality either. I was a student here years ago trying to get a manicure licence. I paid them a part of school fee then started to go there to learn but they didn't teach. I was instructed to do things by CLASSMATES! If I could I would give this place zero stars.... Beware of a lady named Thuy. She LOVES to over charge people and she acts like she knows what she is doing because she claims to be a "professional" but honestly she needs to get her beauty license revoked! My biggest mistake was calling in to inquire if they did "balayage" services. Thuy picked up and she sounded confident about it so I thought it would be safe to give her a try. When I came in I showed her an example picture of the balayage I wanted. She told me it would cost more due to my hair length ~$190 almost mid back (mind you, I had been growing it out for quite some time so I definitely wanted to keep the length) Sketchy enough for the price, I had opted for the additional hair cut and decided on just a color. She began working on my hair and also another WARNING sign had occurred that I ignored since she claimed to be a "professional" I didn't want to question her techniques... After lightening my hair she was literally teasing my hair at the roots then painted on the color without seperating each strip with foil or plastic wrap... The WHOLE process took 6.5 hours... And within that time she put a buttload of chemicals on my hair.. washed and blow dried probably 3 times... But the end result was uneven almost peroxide ORANGE hair! It was my worst nightmare... I had endured almost 7 hours of wasted time and money where I could have just seen a REAL professional for the same price OR LESS in half the time and could have actually given me what I wanted. I demanded to speak with the owner Kim and I expressed how unhappy I was and that I had a wedding to go to in TWO days! While I was talking to her Thuy had the nerve to raise her voice with ME (the customer with orange hair!) saying she did what I asked for and pointed at the picture. NOPE, it was the complete opposite and far from what I had asked for. I did not ask to be transformed into a troll! Kim gave me a discount, but Thuy is lucky I even paid. I found Vuu's while searching for a Groupon for microblading. As always, I filtered my findings through yelp and read a lot of positive reviews about their microblading procedure. I accepted the fact that it may be a student working on me because I knew that the instructor would be very involved, and you couldn't beat the price. I was thrilled to find out that only the master microblader Kim would be performing the procedure. She is SO GOOD. Sadly, I've never been able to grow my eyebrows, so she pretty much had a blank canvas. I was amazed by the perfect, natural looking brows that she had created. She went above and beyond my expectations, and my expectations are always high! I have a pretty low pain tolerance so I was a bit worried about that but she used a strong numbing cream and it really helped. TL;DR: This place seems fine for haircuts, poor for nail services. I came here for a gel mani and pedi for a living social voucher I purchased. I called to make an appointment but apparently too early in advance because I arrived and there was no one there to do nails. Fine, someone took my number and called me back half an hour later telling me to come back again. Just a waste of time, don't bother with appointments and just call day of. When I got there she seemed concerned about my closed toed shoes, and gave the impression that there were no disposable flip flops or means to dry my toes (fortunately both were false and they do have the regular pedi accessories). The pedicure was nothing to write home about but it did come out clean. No buffing or foot scrubbing of any sort though. My gel mani was unfortunately awful, tepid water, refused to clip my nails (so what if I like them short), no buffing or smoothing at all. She didn't let it cure properly and turned out very patchy. I picked a nude that turned out to be a little sheer and asked for an additional coat and she refused. Finished with a whole load of alcohol and mixed the lotion right in. I went all the way to Seattle for a haircut and manicure. Strange I know. It wasn't really part of the plan but the whole no haircut for 9months in order to grow it long finally pissed me off enough. I'd always wanted to get a cheap haircut from a student so decided to take the opportunity walk into Vuu's UPSIDE - super duper cheap haircut and style ($10) and French manicure ($8 - but she gave me a $1 off just because) - whilst it's a student cutting your hair, their teacher came at the end to help tidy my hair up and teach her what she should be doing - with their limited English ability they manage to come across as super friendly DOWNSIDE - communication is a problem when trying to describe how you want your hair cut. I came prepared with photos and advise you do too - the manicure is very simple (no fan to dry your nails with) but still done well - my haircut took a bit longer than normal, not that I was in a rush. Not for the time poor or impatient OVERALL Happy with my haircut. It's no longer a thick mess of please grow 10cm in the next week so I can have long hair again. Nails are pretty and girly. I had my hair dyed about a month ago and wanted to see if anything funky would happen before I actually reviewed this place. Do not go here for hair dyeing. I can't say anything about their other provided services but, from my experience, just don't do it. Though the student(s) seem to be nice people, this place is ridiculously unorganized. I originally came to the school on a Sunday and Ms. Kim had told me to make an appointment during the weekday because, not only would the services take 3-4 hours, there would be a student that could work on my hair. So I set an appointment for 3PM (latest) on a Wednesday (I had to request to leave early from work) to do my hair. Still, the organization of this school didn't allow a student treat my hair. I LITERALLY had 4 people working on my hair. One student, in the middle of all this, admittedly said that she was in the school to do nails. I came here to correct a self hair dyeing that went wrong. My bottom half was black from a previous dye and could not dye to a medium brown that I had put on my own. So I came here to strip the black and then dye it into a solid dark brown. It was a two step process where they had to bleach my hair first and then dye the entire brown. The first student who had bleached my hair was very nice. Ms. Kim would drop by, not as frequently as I wanted, to over see. At some point when she came over, the student seem concerned,but Ms. Kim brushed it off. A nail student was helping this student all the while. While I had the bleach in my hair, another women who was getting her hair dyed asked me, "Is that the look that you want? Because the back of your hair is soooo much lighter than another places." I foolishly brushed that off and told her that I needed to bleach my hair first and then add color. She seemed really concerned and recommended me another school in.. Tacoma (I believe) if I wanted to try out another place after. The first student then left because she need to pick up her kid and another student took over. She didn't speak English. When I paid at the end, she mustered that she came to the States around 3 months ago. She was also very nice and did the second process along with Ms. Kim. Ms. Kim was another story. While the student added the brown dye to the right half of my hair, Ms, Kim worked on the left side while answering a phone call. She spoke into the phone for a few minutes and lost track into the dye applying and was pretty much moving my hair back and forth. I'm not an expert, but I could tell that she lost her place and couldn't do anything anymore because my hair was a tangled mess. In the middle of it she hung up the phone and received another call. She dropped her phone however. I think she knew that I was a little peeved and decided to ignore the call. I had my hair washed and blow dried. Ms. Kim said it looked good and left right in the middle of blow drying.. Leaving me and the student that didn't know English and another man who was very soft spoken to deal with the cost of everything. Originally, I had asked for an estimate the Sunday where I originally wanted to get my hair done. I told the man Ms. Kim said it would cost $80. He had to call her to confirm which took some time because she didn't answer at the first call. Honestly, the results aren't that bad. My hair is definitely not a solid brown. The inside portion of my hair is totally lighter and there is a bad blend on my bangs. I can live with it. Hair grows and I knew what might've come out going to a beauty school. What is truly horrible is the disrespect and services from the teacher from this school. I really held my tongue. Never coming here again. read more

In the mood for an inexpensive haircut, I meandered on over to the ID. I think their card was in a restaurant. Walking up King St, I see Vuu's and peer into the window at the price sign. "7 regular, 8 for experienced [student]". A lady (Kim?) greets me and says it will be a moment. I take a hair chair and here comes this nice asian lady with a heaping bag of pastel-colored WOMD (kidding!) and big hat. Her name was Yoko(sp) and she's japanese (nice accent included). Very nice gal and even said I resembled Ichiro's hair! I was flattered and told her many thanks. During the session, you can certainly tell she's cautious and inexperienced (both haircut and shampoo massage). Afterwards, when I thought I was done, the owner comes out and she says Yoko has to correct some areas. When she said it'll be 7 (not 8) + 2 for $9 total, I sighed. She also forgot to have her fix the neckline, which is usually cleaner, straighter and smooth (still long behind the ears). Great value and facility. After reading the About Section, I appreciate what they've done even more. There is also room for improvement: -If I ask for an experienced student, that is what I want. If I can't get one, tell me why and we'll go from there. -During the corrective part after the haircut, Kim should ask me questions like "How does it look?" "Did we miss a part?" etc. I'm interested in returning when Yoko improves. read more

TL;DR: Guys, if you want to cheap haircut and don't care much about your look, give this place a try... maybe LADIES: #treatyoself! and go somewhere better! you deserve that much! ------------- So, I am that type of girl who doesn't believe in paying $50+ for a haircut, so what do I do? I filtered for 1 $ sign hair salons on Yelp and found this place. I was suspicious at first because this place only has 28 reviews but it's still a 4.5 star place right?! New city, new me, let's be adventurous. Besides, I have A LOT of hair and it's getting loong (my own definition, it's only about armpit length), and I am only looking to thin it out and trim the split ends... Such a simple task, no one can't mess that up! WRONG! First impression - this place looked like a mess. Bad omen #1. As I walked into the salon, one lady was complaining about how her haircut wasn't turning out the way like the picture. Methinks: I better not have the trainee who gave her the cut. And guess who I got? That same trainee! Talk about karma. I've no idea what this trainee's name was since she never introduced herself or bothered to converse with me throughout the 1.5 hours I was there, watching my hair being tortured. So, let's just call her Van. Van took me to get my hair shampooed in COLD water! I had to ask her to turn the water warmer. Not sure if my dog is being treated as a loyalty or what, but the shampoo Van used smelled just like my dog's shampoo. Another uh-oh. So on to the haircut, I only had 2 asks - 1) thin out my hair, no layers. 2) cut 2 inches max. So Van began her magic. She just kept on cutting and cutting and cutting. When will she thin out my hair?! After 30 mins, she was still cutting, so I asked can she just thin it out, but she said she's not done yet. Okay, you are the pro here, so I wait. Another 15 min passed, she finally put down her scissors! Thinning time?! She then started straightening my WET hair using a flat iron without putting any heat protection on! My hair hasn't touched a flat iron in at least 2 years! :O When she finally done with that... is it time to thin out my hair? NO! She picked up her scissors again and started cutting my hair yet again and refused to listen to my plead to stop. At the same time, I can hear Kim (the owner/instructor) chitchatting loudly with her other students in Vietnamese. She then started talking on the phone while trimming a customer's hair! She never once bothered to take a look at what Van's doing all these time! My friends would say I am easily the friendliest and most patient person they know but I finally told Van to stop because my armpit length hair is now only reaching my chin. I must stop this madness before she start chopping the other side too. Van finally agreed to call Kim. When I told Kim that Van had cut at least 4 inches off when I asked for 2 max, she didn't believe me until I showed her a pic I took at their bathroom before the cut. She attempted to fix it but it was way to late. Kim, being the big person she was, comped me for the shampoo which was $2 only. o.o?! Long story semi-short, thanks to Van's lack of knowledge and Kim's lack of attention as an instructor, I am now sporting an uneven neck length hair on one side of my face and and zigzag/dog bit looking neck length hair on the other. The little amount of money I saved ended up being used for purchase of flat iron, hair spray and hair heat protector because my hair just won't stay straight at short length. First of all, I'm not picky about my hair style. As long it looks clean, I'm always fine with that. So pricey barber shop etc. is not an option for me. I have my haircut once a month so what the heck. I just don't like an stylist who rushes their work though. My co-workers went to Jade garden last Monday and I found this salon near the restaurant (like 1 block or 2 blocks away). So I gave a shot. LIKES: 1. The stylists / students are very nice (personality and look wise haha). 2. My haircut took like 45 minutes. She's very careful and keeps asking me if "is this short enough"? etc. Which for me is ok... rather not asking and keep doing her own way. 3. I still looked like a human after I left the salon haha! 4. Very affordable haircut. Who can beat that!!! DISLIKES: 1. Well... the front door says 6 bucks for a haircut. The when I was seated, she said "she is more professional" (or simply better), so she asked for 8 bucks. Otherwise, I will wait for somebody who accepts 6 bucks. For me, 8 bucks or 6 bucks doesn't really matter because it's still very affordable compared to others. But I think they should provide that information in a print-out so that at least you have an idea before hand. And how do I know who is better or not since it's my first time? It's not really a big deal in a way because some of them are students. They learn how to do it and you pay their service. I actually gave her a tip more than the amount I give to a professional service because in reality, she took her time cutting my hair rather than rushing. I guess my point is that they should provide an information before hand like a print out in a board or at the entrance door... not the very second after you are seated at the barber's seat (or whatever they call it). read more

I recently had micro blading done on Saturday Dec 16th . And I admit I had been putting it off because I was nervous and scared but Kim and her staff including David made me and my 4 year old daughter feel at ease and was amazing with my daughter . I had been plucking my eyebrows for years and now at 37 they was literally anything left I was embarrassed to swim in the summer and was always checking to make sure they hadn't wiped off throughout the day . Kim and David were amazing and I was practically in tears when they were done they look so much better then I even thought.I am forever grateful to Kim for doing this for me . I've been there 2 times. The first time I went, the student cut my hair poorly and luckily an instructor came in and patched things up a bit. It was still a very bad haircut regardless. After that experience I swore I would not go back again no matter how cheap the prices are. Unsurprisingly, I didn't keep my promise and visited here again half a year later. My hair had grown too long and all I needed was a buzz cut. After my last experience here, my salon of choice became Kim's Hair Salon - located 5 mins away from Vuu's. However, I decided that a student could give a simple buzz cut could they not? I found out the answer to be not. I went there and told the student I wanted a buzz cut. She then proceeded to cut my hair with scissors 1 cm at a time. I'm thinking to myself "Ok, and just be the patient, she's still a student." However, she kept cutting at this rate for a half hour before I realized that she probably had no idea what I wanted so I searched for a picture on my phone and showed it to her. No way she could screw up now right? Wrong again. She continued her 1 cm scissors cut for another 20 min before an instructor came. Thank goodness, an instructor, and right? Wrong again. I told him and showed him the pic I showed the student and 15 min later, voila! A totally different haircut than the picture. I understand if there's language barriers - no problem - but cmon now, how much more help can I offer when I showed a picture! I'm serious this time, I'm not going back here for sure. read more

I had a gel manicure over here for $15. The girl who did my nails was polite and tried her best. It hurt a little when she was trying to trim off my cuticles. I think it might've taken an hour to get this done, so definitely don't come here if you are in a rush! The gel color selection was small, but they had all the basic colors. I'm not a neat freak or anything, but I couldn't help but notice that the place was a little dirty too. I like supporting the students, but I couldn't help but feel a little wary of the overall cleanliness of this place. I called the school twice to make an appointment but no one answered, so I just walked over to test my luck. They were able to help me right away, but maybe that's where my luck failed me. I came in for a pedicure and it took over an hour. The woman was very slow and spoke pretty much no English. She did not ask if I wanted my nails round or square, so I assumed she would do them square because really, who does round anymore? Well, she does. So my toe nails are VERY round. And uneven, meaning that the big toe nails don't even match. When I expressed my concern about this, I got a lot of fluff about how the woman that did my nails does them for all the big stars in Vietnam and she's wonderful at it and is a professional and is so great at it and knows all about it and is great at it. That's all well and good, but it doesn't help me grow my now uneven, round toe nails out any faster. As a consolation, she took $3 off the fee. So, before I leave I ask where I should go to dry my toe nails. They had no fan or a UV light, so they gave me some flip flops (which normally cost a dollar but she was giving them to me for free... like that would change my opinion of the place). They dont know how to cut hair that good even to do something very simple like a line up. You walk in they will say hello, then go to the back to play paper, rock, scissor, whoever loses will be the one cutting your hair or whatever your there for. Worst experience ever!!!!! Place was dirty and not like a salon type of messy either. I CAN NOT EXPRESS THIS ENOUGH DO NOT GET MICROBLADING HERE!!!!!! This is not a professional school at all. The students seem nice but the ink is cheap and Vuu is the only instructor and is all over the place she is not professional at all. She went too deep on my brows and they are red. I have had this twice at other places over the years with great results. She was rude and her salon looks like it has never seen a good cleaning ever. Even her supply cart was gross. I'm a college girl on a budget and paying $15+ for a hair cut is out of the question. I honestly expected my hair cut to be 50% of a hot mess, but I was surprisingly impressed. My hair came out exactly how I wanted it. The only con is that the language barrier may be apparent, depending on which student you receive. Mine understood english fairly well, but I HIGHLY recommend bringing in a photo if you want a specific hair cut. The speed of the hair cut also depends on the student. Mine was fairly fast (30 minutes) but my friend's was a tad longer. If you're on a time crunch, I suggest not coming to this salon. If you receive a student who is struggling, I think the teacher comes by and fixes your hair for you. That's what happened to my friend. Vuu is a great, cheap hair salon! read more

I've been here on more than 10 occasions. It's a good deal on an okay haircut, but the service here is awful. You walk in unacknowledged, sometimes for 10 minutes at a time. The English of the students isn't always great, which led to one of my haircuts being pretty much everything I didn't want (and communicated). The interview I had the day after was extra fun as you can imagine. They also close early without notice, and I've been turned away twice because of this. I've had to run to the ATM multiple times, because their card reader sucks. In the year or so I've come here, they haven't done a thing about it. I wanted to support a Vietnamese business, but it's just too much. Never coming back. Pay for a real haircut and people that'll actually greet you. I wish I could discourage you more. read more

I recently had my hair cut at Vuu beauty school by a student there. The school just remodel and look very welcoming. The student that cut my hair was very friendly and know what she was doing. Her name is Jenny and very cute too. I definetly reccommend people to come to vuu beauty school for a hair cut. Jenny make sure i was satisfed with my hair cut and if not I could have an Instructor do a touch up. don't forget to get your hair shampoo, they give great head massage. read more

I had orginally given this school a 5 star rating, but after my last visit I had to change my rating. My last visit was very different then my preceding visits. This last time, the salon was filthy, the students dropped combs on the floor and picked them up reusing them on the clients. I even witnessed the students stations with hair everywhere and those students leaving their combs and styling tools in the preceding customer's hair. GROSS!!!!!!!! In fairness, Kim, the owner was not in the salon. But there was NOT an instructor present. Which was confirmed by the senior student. I asked for an instructor and he stated that there was not one on the premises. IS THAT LEGAL????? If you go here....make sure there is an instructor onsite for your visit!!!! The students were rude to the clientele and did not follow health regulations.
