This is a review of the SOOP - a weekly swing dancing party that happens in Kompaszaal on Fridays…read morestarting at 9PM. This is not the review of the establishment that I would described as having great views from the balcony, minimalist interiors, friendly service. Logistics: during the summer, the DJ music party is free; this is what I have attended. At other times, party goes to live music and has an admittance fees, presumably. The place is on the outskirts of the central Amsterdam; the Uber trips to and from the touristy areas will cost 10-14 Euros or less. The dancing floor is pretty large, but subdivided into square-shaped areas by a set of columns. There was more than enough space with the summer DJ crowd (about 70 dancers), I expect thing to get more cozy when the live music is playing. The floor is pretty smooth and stone-looking with no grouts (plastic, I presume), your dance shoes will work well. The music selection on the night I have visited was excellent, with proper balance of tempos and styles. The crowd appears to be very skilled, more than half the follows I have danced with were way above my skill level, practically all of them were quite good with very few beginners. There were significantly more follows than leads, but not disastrously so, still, if you are an out-of-town follow, consider bringing your own lead. Overall, a must-visit event for a swing dancer visiting Amsterdam. For a reasonably skilled lead, a chance to dance with some truly great followers.

All afternoon there were only one or two other people sitting in the cafe and everyone else who filtered through was getting stuff for pick up or take away. The staff was pretty laid back, and they made the food relatively quickly. I ordered a B.L.A.T. (bacon lettuce avocado tomato) on a roll of my choice, and that was well balanced and well put together. It looked so good my 2 year old grabbed my sandwich for herself halfway through. My 2 year old demolished a few of their croissants, leaving a big mess, so I take it they were good. I later had a "rice slice", which is a rice krispie treat which has been defiled with raisins and orange pieces. In my book that is blasphemous, because it disturbs the homeostatic enjoyment of a solid layer of rice krispies, butter and marshmallow. But I guess that is the style around here. They offer free babyccinos (soy milk, flavored syrup and foamed milk on top), so I ordered one for my daughter to go along with my cappuccino. It was very cute, but my daughter did not like it at all. Oh well, at least it was free. My cappuccino was good, but I was surprised it didn't come with a packet of sugar or a cookie or a piece of chocolate or anything. I later had a large mokka, and that had a pleasant amount of sweetness, with real chocolate chunks swimming around at the bottom. Overall I would come back here again for a gezellig snack or coffee. The music was good, the staff didn't care if you stayed or went, or if your 2 year old dances around, and the food and drinks are good. There is not much in terms of seating, but if you can come when it's semi-empty, it's a chill place to sit and watch the trams and bicycles and the rest of the world go by.

I heart coffee, usually. I blame my mum. She always had…read morethose biscuits called Café Noir. And coffee flavoured candy. And vanilla ice cream with a little bit of black java. I still heart those little treats. I grew up, started working and thought cappucino straight out of the machine at the office was the bomb. Ooh, more/less sugar/milk, Café Latte, even tea tasted awesome from that good ol' Douwe Egberts device. Then i learned about Starbucks, outside the borders of what i know and love. Everything abroad is amazing, so must be Starbucks. A world of coffee mixtures was now reveiled. Coffee Company arrived in the NL and i thought that must be the place i am supposed to work! Then i saw the tired and grumpy faces so i reconsidered. I am much more fun at the front of the counter. But it keeps haunting me, the Coffee Company. So i keep visiting. After my mandatory hours of sitting behind a screen and doing the mandatory admin and search for jobs and information at the adjacent public library I find myself in need of a cuppa joe. So I do, no need to restrain myself. A few days ago I was here at CC and went for the intriguing TONIC ESPRESSO and LEMON CAKE. Disillusion comes in pairs i suppose. Tonic espresso, the name itself should've set off some alarms. But no. I had to find out for myself. It's the combination that is completely lost on me. Two conclusions derived from this experience. * First of all tonic should be accompanied by gin, Hendrick's preferably. Always. * Second. Espresso should be accompanied by some frothed milk. Always. Mixing tonic and espresso is like spitting on my lemon cake, unnecessary and waste of what could've been good stuff. Speaking of cake and eating it too, the lemon cake I had to wash away the weird concoction needed some (different kind of) moisture. It was a bit on the dry side and well, kinda 'Meh'. The kinda cake you get at granny's. And you never visit her just for a slice of that cake, do you? You just finish eating your lemon brick politely, whilst smiling at her, knowing she has other qualities, luckily. That said, I was not planning to come back to CC. After all, CC isn't family so you can stay away and never look back. Forget about its existence and find better breweries. But here I am. Again. Having my brew and eat the BANANA NUT BREAD too. What a difference a day makes. The espresso macchiato is good, the bread even better. I won't claim I heart this ESPRESSO MACCHIATO. It is somewhat sour to the taste, but it will suffice. But the BN bread is fluffy and just sweet enough, I would go for seconds if the group of hungry tourists didn't beat me to it. But they did, them wolves. Leaves me no choice then to lick the crumbs of the plate, pack my bags and leave this joint. I will be back though. And I will take the whole loaf and eat it too. Ps my apologies for writing as much as i did, i think i had too much coffee, so couldnt stop writing...True story! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really liked this place!…read more The first visit was for breakfast before starting our day. Everything is made fresh on premise so everything tasted fresh and amazing. As the title suggests they offer mostly bagels, salads and cakes. The first time I had a mushroom burger with pine nuts and parmesan. Himself had the salmon salad. Then when this was the only place open Sunday morning I had the tuna melt in a tomato bagel and himself the breakfast set. Everything just tasted divine and was well presented. The fruit juices, coffee...and the staff were very friendly. A very consistent place that I cannot fault. Also you felt at ease here all seating was 1.5 meters away etc . If you are looking for Brunch/breakfast do pay it a visit.

This is my favourite store of this chain but this is the slowest service I ever had in a store of this chain. If they are busy, be prepared to wait forever or even have to go inside to order. I sat outside for 15 min and no service. I tried to move to a table that was closer, and still no service. The person who took my previous seat got service and I was still waiting. Other people also got service around me (pretty slow too) The whole staff is new since they did a revamp and they seem very unprepared to me, both as baristas and waiters. I know being a waiter is a tiring job but people waiting are paying costumes, waiting a little bit is ok but giving up and going home is different. There was a huge line inside with people who seemed as annoyed as me, and I gave up siting outside in the sun of a sunny day (rare thing here) and just ordered a takeaway coffee to have at home. This is such a shame because the owner is friendly and welcoming to costumes and they finally have a milk alternative that is not soy! I hope this gets better because this is my favourite b&b and they put a lot more tables outside, which I love. But I think there are too many seats for little staff. I know service in Amsterdam is normally suuuuper slow and sometimes even rude, but I come from a place that waiters give great service and fast, and get paid a lot less! Old review: Fresh bagels! Pretty much standard quality just like the other locations of this chain. Except that the staff here is specially friendly and the service is very good too :) the manager is super friendly and the location is very pleasant, with outside seating with a view to the channel.
