    Will Source Staffing

I went to WillSource Staffing's Ruston location in hopes of finding employment. During my visit, I…read morewas directed to speak with Angie. Almost immediately, she informed me that I needed to take a drug test. I explained to her that I have a valid prescription for Adderall and that I had documentation available to verify that it is legally prescribed medication for my diagnosed ADHD. Instead of allowing me to proceed with the normal testing process, she responded by saying, "Well, you're going to fail it." She then handed me paperwork instructing me to obtain a ten-panel MRO drug test from a medical clinic at my own expense, which would cost approximately $40.00. At the time, I only had $1.76 in my checking account and could not afford to pay for the test that same day. Angie informed me that because I was unable to complete the test immediately, I would be ineligible to work with WillSource Staffing for six months. I do not believe I was given clear instructions before my appointment regarding what would be required during the interview process or that I would be expected to pay out of pocket for additional testing. Had I been informed beforehand, I could have planned accordingly or scheduled the interview for a time when I had the necessary funds available. I also do not feel it is appropriate that I should be required to personally pay for additional testing solely because I take a legally prescribed medication for a documented medical condition. In my experience, most employers cover the cost of pre-employment drug screenings. Staffing agencies work with many individuals who are already facing financial hardship while searching for employment, and requiring applicants to pay unexpected testing costs creates an additional barrier for people who are already struggling. I later spoke with Angie's supervisor, Annie, regarding the situation. However, she stated only that "it is our policy" and did not believe Angie had handled the matter improperly. As a single mother of twins who is desperately trying to find employment, I left the experience feeling discouraged, judged, and without compassion or support. I believe applicants should be treated with professionalism, respect, and clear communication regarding hiring requirements and expenses.
