The Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center in Huntington, Indiana is a museum I have wanted to…read moresee for a long time. This summer I finally had a chance to make a visit there, and it was truly worth the journey. This is the place to go if you want to learn about each of the 50 Vice President - or "veep," as the grandson of Alben Barkley, Harry Truman's vice president, started to call him. Barkley is also the only U.S. vice president to marry while in office as well as the oldest person elected to the vice presidency. Indiana claims as many as six vice presidents, of whom Dan Quayle and Mike Pence are still alive. Two vice presidents, Charles Fairbanks (from Indiana) and George Dallas have had cities named after them. Museum has its own parking lot right next to the building. When the schools are in session, the museum is often packed with students and children, so summer months are really the best times to make your visit. The reason I didn't give five stars is that the museum doesn't have a gift shop, which I always love to visit at museums to buy souvenirs.

It is, of course, also the home of Huntington University. I have to be honest and say that I really enjoyed that visit and it gave me super fond memories of the museum. The director that I met was really friendly and let me see as much as I could from my wheelchair. Quayle was Vice-President from 1989-1993 under President George H.W. Bush. He tried to snag the Republican nomination in 2000, though that effort fell short fairly quickly. I'd never really thought about vice-presidents also having any type of museum, though this museum located in an old Christian Science church is actually quite a nice sized museum. Tremendous attention is actually given to all the vice-presidents with each one having on display memorabilia, letters, and more. While Quayle himself has donated much to the museum, other items have been acquired in auctions or on Ebay. Did you know that Indiana has actually been the home of six vice-presidents and three other VP candidates? The upstairs area is primarily dedicated to Quayle himself. There are items from childhood and the infamous dog-chewed law degree. Marilyn Quayle's inaugural gown is here and so is the Bible Quayle was sworn into office on. There is, of course, a gift shop that is actually pretty cool. Over the years, the museum has sort of transitioned from simply a museum to an actual "learning center." In 2008, its name was officially changed to The Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center. Quayle himself no longer lives in Huntington. So, if you're hoping to catch Quayle popping in you're probably out of luck. However, when he wrote a book they had copies and I was touched that an autographed copy was actually donated to the Tenderness Tour. It continued my fondness for this place. The Quayle Center is open limited hours. So, if you're planning on a road trip I'd be sure to check the hours. This is especially true with the pandemic. Admission is only $3 for adults and $1 for ages 7-17. They also have group rates. Huntington is actually a rather neat little city and worth a day trip. I found students from nearby Huntington University to be incredibly friendly and there are some terrific dining options in town including Nick's Kitchen (famous for their tenderloin). If you have a young one into politics or presidential history, this is definitely worth the road trip.

They blended nicely into the background so you could talk. However if you wanted to really pay attention and enjoy...then it was loud enough to do so. The food lines flowed quickly. The servers were well organized, efficient and friendly. The check out process was the same. It was nice to have the alcohol and dessert areas separated from the food to keep the food lines moving. The prices were very reasonable. The food was very consistent with other Greek restaurants I've been to. They have a nice variety of entrees and desserts. Whether you are a novice to Greek food or a native...the food was delicious! Come out to Headwaters Park and give Greekfest a try! It's a 44 year tradition in Fort Wayne!!

They have an excellent selection of Catholic Christian gifts and goods. Their book selection is ok and is expanding monthly. Their selection of religious DVD's is very good. There is also a room that has a good selection of church goods: candles, pixes, priest's vestments & shirts, etc. One whole wall is covered with various Crucifixes. They also have a good selection of printed Religious Icons mounted on wood, as well as small 2"x3" refrigerator magnets. They do carry First Communion and Baptismal outfits for children. Also, they have a very good selection of religiously oriented greeting cards. (Baptism, Confirmation, Wedding, Funeral, Ordination, Anniversary, Birthday + others) I even saw a soft, stuffed practice "Mass" kit for those boys who would like to play at being a priest!

The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society is located just outside of Fort Wayne in New Haven. My…read morefamily came to the historical society on December 2, 2023 for their annual Christmas Caboose trains. It certainly was an interesting experience. It's in a real train yard, and you have time before boarding to tour of the engine of a train and speak to people who have been engineers on a train. Truly fascinating. It was a cold day, thankfully they also had a food truck the sold coffee and hot chocolate available, i grabbed a coffee on the way out. They also had a gift shop available, it sold shirts, coffee mugs, carved wooden trains and other items. Once the train was ready, we got coach area and off we went. It was a small train ride, just 20 minutes. This train ride, also was really meant more for children. There was a santa who would go from passenger car to passenger car to great children. I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who has children! The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical society also runs longer rides from other areas and they have interesting events. I would suggest you look at their website: https://fortwaynerailroad.org Again, although this was meant more for children and families with children, it was a fun experience and helped me think of a time where trains were the primary mode of long distance transportation in landlocked areas. It made me want to go on ones more for adults and i may go on another from the historical society. Last month I took my family to see the Nutcracker Ballet by the Fort Wayne Ballet in the Arts…read moreUnited Center. My family have seen that ballet done before in Miami, Florida by the Miami City Ballet. We moved nearby to Van Wert, back in 2020, and were excited to finally see ballet again. My family and I also love in particular the Nutcracker ballet so we were especially excited. Moreover, my mother's breast cancer surgery was schedule a few weeks after this and I was hoping this would cheer her up. First thing i will say, is I love how the ballet company was selling nutcracker Christmas ornaments. One of my two Christmas trees in my house is one decorated in that theme, so I took advantage and bought several ornaments I did not have to add to my tree. The ornaments are made by Kurt Adler, which are great quality... well worth the price. They also sold nutcrackers (of course), and they were selling nutcracker themed chocolate from local chocolatier DeBrand Chocolates. Since I am chocolate obsessed, I also bought some. Already just a few steps in, I was happy due to the goodies I was taking home. Before I entered the area in the Arts United Center where the ballet was taking place, there was a booth for the Fort Wayne Humane Society. They were there to get support from the public and also go showcase a few of the animals they have up for adoption. Two small little black kittens, who were a few months old and two cute dogs. I thought it was very nice of the ballet company to have this booth there, i love animals. What was really cool, is those two dogs up for adoption actually were part of the ballet. They showed up as the dogs of several of the adults who brought their children to the Christmas celebration that forms the beginning of the ballet. What a clever idea! The scenery of the ballet was incredibly well done. The Arts United Center is a bit spartan, less beautiful and decorated than other theaters I have gone to. To make it beautiful, and make you believe you are in a literal winter wonderland, you have to have incredible set design... which they did. I loved how before intermission, right as the curtains were dropping... artificial show came down from the ceiling onto everyone watching the ballet. Wow! Magical! Were the dancers as polished as those in Miami? No. But wow, I enjoyed the ballet more in Fort Wayne due to all the things I described above. It was just a better overall experience. When my family got home, I got onto their website and got tickets for future productions. My family had a wonderful time! My mom left with a smile on her face! I added some beautiful ornaments to my tree! I love Fort Wayne Ballet!
