DJ Dave played at our daughters grad party this past Saturday night. We hired him because we had heard him at another party last summer. Both parties had folks up and dancing. First of all, I would give more than 5 stars if I could. The bottom line: not only is David a fantastic DJ, he is super easy to work with, professional, & kind. Let's be honest, planning a wedding is not easy. In fact, it's an epic organizational feat (or nightmare, depending on how you want to look at it). I was so delighted when we hired David for our wedding, as I immediately felt like I had one less thing to worry. No matter what my question was, David always replied with lightening fast speed. In fact, when I first reached out for a quote, I had a response 5 minutes later, with a picture of Dave DJ'ing at our venue. That's pretty awesome customer service! We talked to Dave about the type of music we like & what we did not want to hear, then we turned over the reigns to him. When we were looking for a DJ for our wedding we were always suspicious about vendors rated 5 out of 5 stars. But we give David 5 starts because that's what he and his company deserved. We found Expressway Music through Weddingwire and Yelp. He had decent reviews so we decided to schedule an interview with him. From our first meeting until end end of our reception, David and his team were very professional, helpful, flexible and friendly which is quite a rare combination. He asked us questions about the format of our wedding, what kind of music we like and explained us what he thinks would be the best mix of music for us. We knew that he was going to customize the playlist based on our taste but also add something from his experience which worked perfect at the end. His office staff are very professional and made sure that the administrative side of this was handled very quickly and easily. Following the first meeting, we were never pressured to make a quick decision -- they did not act like salesman -- they looked like a group of professionals who like what they do. A few weeks before the wedding, they sent us a few online questionnaires on the event details and our music preferences which we submitted and discussed with David in the final meeting. This hole process didn't take more than a few hours of our time and at each stage David and his team were very helpful and professional. David did a spectacular job at the wedding. We picked 10 must-play songs and let David choose the rest for us. He read the crowd so well and made sure the dancing did not stop all night. David was a perfect wedding DJ in every respect. He listened to to what we wanted and took it from there. The dance floor was packed for hours. Highlights include: 1. Unlike some DJs who wanted us to put together playlists David spoke to us about our taste in music and read the crowd and played awesome music from start to finish. 2. The music was the perfect volume. Often wedding DJs play music too loudly and ruin the atmostphere for most people. David took great care to make sure that people could talk during dinner. 3. David is an absolutely phenomenal DJ. He worked a relief event in our neighborhood (Sunnyside) with basically only two days notice, and boy, did he deliver! The music selection was terrific, and I loved the way the selection matched evolution of the energy in the room throughout the course of the evening--DJ magic! He was also really great at handling transitions---when announcements needed to be made, he did a great job of segueing out of and back into the music. Friends of mine kept coming up to me after the wedding to say how talented our DJ was. We had a very international crowd of Spanish, Hebrew, French and English speakers. Expressway music was able to read the crowd perfectly and accommodate all tastes. David seamlessly wove international music, with hip-hop and nostalgic songs. Everything was perfect. Dave was the DJ at my wedding last week and he (and Expressway Music) are absolutely wonderful! They are reliable, professional, responsive, helpful and extremely talented. During our first meeting Dave asked us about our vision, took detailed notes and really listed to what we wanted. A great example of Dave's expertise in is when we had our final meeting we told him that we wanted a short first dance and asked him to cut the song short (Cant Take My Eyes Off of You by Frankie Valli & The Four Season). He suggested that we play the whole song because it's such a great song with a great chorus and people would look forward to it. We told him that we trusted his opinion (but I was still a little nervous). Understanding that we were uncomfortable being the center of attention for a long period of time he had the crowd join in singing the chorus and it was a huge hit. He then invited the rest of the guest to join us on the dance floor. It was the perfect transition without taking anything away from our first dance or the song. Multiple times during the wedding people told us how great the music was and how amazing it was that Dave was able to keep the partying going on all night (we had non-stop dancing for 4 hours). We hired David for our wedding, and all we can really say is he nailed it! He met with us twice before the big day, and really took the time to get to know us and what we really wanted for our Party. We had a small wedding with a fairly diverse crowd, and our big ask was for him to get everyone to feel like they were a part of the party. He is a master at reading the room. There are tons of great reviews for the guys at Expressway Music here, but I'm here to praise Jeanine, who KJ/DJ'd our wedding. Leading up to the wedding, she was incredibly organized and professional, meeting with us to understand the kind of music and vibe we wanted, sending us thorough notes to ensure she had it right, and then a few days in advance, talking through the details of the night. We provided her with a long list of karaoke and dance song requests, and while she was upfront that not every request would be accommodated in exactly the order we listed it, she did an amazing job of executing our plan while also integrating requests on the spot and responding to the mood in the room as the night went along. We wanted a mix of karaoke and dance music, and Jeanine and her colleague went back and forth between the two mediums seamlessly. She read the crowd incredibly well and knew just what to play at any given moment to keep the momentum going. I and others made special requests throughout the night, and she was totally cooperative and willing to change course, never losing her smile or cheerful demeanor. Overall, Jeanine was a delight - both in her personality and her skill at her job. I also want to give a shout-out to Charissa, who handled the business end of things. She was very professional and informative and also a pleasure to work with. Expressway music is awesome! I had Yan playing the violin during the ceremony and cocktail hour for my wedding. He is truly an amazing musician. He was so professional and nice. He really could play anything you ask him to, and made it sounds so beautiful. I even had some songs that were contemporary, and he was able to play them with his violin and make them sound so classical. Taylor was my dj. From the initial meeting, I already knew that he was a great dj. He was fun and played all the right music. The dance floor was on fire! Dan Kingman MC/DJ'd our daughter's bat mitzvah party recently. We had him for our older child's bat mitzvah party a few years ago and we were thrilled to be able to have him again. He did not disappoint! Dan is a superb DJ and an MC. He has a real knack for reading the room and playing whatever music that would please those who are on the floor dancing. He is great at engaging the teens and can keep the party flowing without being intrusive or coercive. Best of all, he is great about keeping the volume of music that keeps the dance party energetic while allowing others to converse. The dancers were terrific - fun, energetic, and engaging but also totally happy to go with the flow of the party. The office staff is also very courteous and friendly. This review is solely for their harpist, we didn't use their DJ services. Honestly, if it weren't for Charissa, who does all of the scheduling and coordination for Expressway, we would have cut ties with them a few days before our wedding. I don't think we fully understood the meaning of the expression of "the customer is always right" until we dealt with this harpist. To back up a bit, we had calls and/or walk-throughs scheduled with our DJ, caterer, florist, etc. before the wedding. We thought it best to make sure everyone was on the same page, so we asked Charissa if we could have a short call with the harpist as well, to ensure she knew what we were looking for, and to ask her suggestion on a song. We worked with Charissa, who was very pleasant and accommodating to schedule a 15 minute call. For the call itself, first, Charissa couldn't locate the harpist - she wasn't answering her phone. When she finally got on the phone, about 12 minutes late to a 15 minute call, she was clearly driving and getting in and out of her car. There were many extraneous noises in the background, it was hard to hear her and she clearly wasn't concentrating on our call. We'd sent an email with the part we needed a song suggestion on which she hadn't read through, and she seemed confused as to why the call was happening. To top it all off, she acted like the call was unnecessary and was blatantly rude. Tensions were rising, and my usually very calm and cool-headed fiance got irritated, we were paying her money and she could care less about her job or doing it professionally. Finally, when it got impossible to hear her, he said let's just reschedule the call. Charissa promptly called us back and promised to make things right, sending us links to song options for the part of the ceremony we needed, and promising over and over again that she'd be prompt on the wedding day. Fast forward to the wedding and she was indeed prompt and played fine. Much of the wedding is a blur to me, but one or two people complimented us having a harpist, so I imagine she played well. She had the nerve, however, to come up to me before my husband and I were about to make our entrance into the reception and say, "can you hear me now?!" At first I didn't understand, and then realized she meant because we'd gotten irritated on the call over her lack of professionalism. To come up to me in the middle of my wedding and do this was completely uncalled for. All in all, she did her job and did a good job of it. Personality-wise though, I will never hire her again. She left a terrible taste in my mouth. Charissa I must say though had given us her personal cell phone in case anything had gone wrong over the weekend, and followed up on Monday following the wedding to make sure all went okay. She seemed to go above and beyond. read more

My now wife and I got married in early October 2015 and agreed when we started planning our wedding that picking the right DJ would make a huge difference in how the party portion of the wedding would go. We did the best we could by asking around, taking notes at other friends/family weddings, reading reviews on Yelp & The Knot & lots of other wedding sites. After reading plenty of positive reviews we contacted ExpressWay Music. From the start we were given great customer service and were really impressed with the way that they treated us even before committing to having them be our wedding DJ. Dan Kingman was our DJ and he did everything perfectly. I understand what that must sound like reading it here but hear me out. Here are some specific examples of how Dan went the extra mile for us... 1) We planned our wedding from California (since that's we've lived for over the last few years) and he worked with our schedule when it came to song selections and day of planning (even with the time zone difference). 2) Dan took the time to meet me in NYC when I was visiting the east coast about 6 months before the wedding just to get to know me and Ellie, how we met, our music styles, and what we envisioned our wedding would be like. We didn't even know exactly what it was going to be like but he really helped set a great scene for us with how the guests would be expecting the evening to go and what we wanted in terms of the flow of cocktail hour, entrances, first dance, dinner music, and the heavier dancing portion of the evening. 3) We provided song lists a few weeks before the wedding and Dan made sure he had the versions we talked about. There was nothing too hard to find (provided spotify and youtube links to be safe) and he was able to combine me and Ellie's musical tastes extremely well (she's more 90s hip hop and oldies, i'm more classic rock and EDM). Yes, he did a great job mixing all of those genres. 4) We met up a week before the wedding (Dan actually came and met us after we had a meeting with our photographer) to go through all of the details and made us feel extremely comfortable after sharing his experiences with how the wedding should progress (start off slow, get the tempo going, and then don't bring it down once its up!). He assured us that it was going to be a great time and we really believed he'd deliver. As bride and groom we really didn't have a whole lot of time to speak with the DJ on the day of but Dan made sure that he had all the pronunciations of our parties' names down during the entrance, seamlessly faded all of the music so there were so abrupt stops or silence (my biggest pet peeve), knew our first dance song and made sure we had heard the very beginning since we needed to know exactly when it started for our first dance (which was choreographed), and even played an acoustic version of Miracle by Above & Beyond (since I mentioned them as my favorite music group). Best of all the music was at the right level all night so people weren't shouting at each other if they were having a conversation 3 feet from each other and he never spoke unless he needed to but when he did was very articulate. Dan's got a great personality, read the room really well (180 guests, mostly 30-somethings, but even got some of the 50-somethings on the dance floor), and was an excellent DJ. We were extremely impressed with Dan's professionalism, talent, and ease of working with and are confident he'd do a great job at any event. read more

DJ Dan Kingman was our DJ for our June 14 wedding. We looked into Expressway Music after reading the rave reviews on Yelp. We pretty much decided that we were going to work with them from our first contact. Everyone we spoke with at Expressway was extremely professional, and as a type A person I absolutely loved their process. The wedding day forms and music library on their website make it so easy to express the vibe you want for your special day. We were introduced to Dan right away and he was completely open to meeting with us to discuss our ideas. We had some pretty set ideas of what we wanted from the wedding party introductions to incorporating suggestions from our guests. He was very open to incorporating all of these things and his calmness and professionalism helps to make you feel that everything is going to be great the day of. And it was! He remembered everything and incorporated everything that we had asked (and even picked up on the hints of what we didn't want--which is equally as important!). He even played a song that my father mentioned in his toast immediately following, which was such a wonderful and sentimental touch. Many of our guests were wearing sunglasses so he played a snippet of "sunglasses at night," which everyone has mentioned to us as being very cool and fun. We have received great reviews about the music, including that it got everyone from all ages dancing, it was a blast, and that they were so happy to hear their request played. Expressway Music is a terrific company, top to bottom, for handling your event's musical needs. For our wedding in February 2014, my wife and I knew we should hire David and his company after our first interaction. He had been recommended by a friend who had hired David for his own wedding, and he (correctly) told us that we couldn't go wrong with a DJ who has David Bowie and Outkast album covers on his office walls. He was right. David and his staff (who were always professional, courteous and helpful) set the tone perfectly right from the moment we sat down for our first chat. He understood our rather diverse musical tastes immediately. He let us think through each section of the wedding day and what kind of mood we were hoping to set. And while he encourages a limited number of requests, he is able to perfectly read the crowd to get or keep everyone dancing. He also goes the extra mile, as we had selected for our first dance a song that we could only find online, in a live performance YouTube clip. I had DJ Dan emcee my wedding after seeing him for years do Karaoke Night. I figured, "he's awesome doing karaoke, let's go with what I know." I had NO IDEA that he'd be the most adept, fluid, engaging, masterful wedding guru! (And I had no idea that he had been doing weddings so often that he even has a license to be an officiant. :) ) To start, DJ Dan is a testament to the difference between getting a FLAWLESSLY GREAT and experienced DJ who knows his craft...vs getting a good DJ. My mom had told me when I was planning my wedding that the entertainment "makes or breaks the wedding." And she was right. My entertainment made my wedding the best night of my life. Dan met with us weeks before the wedding and asked a bunch of questions about things I had never even thought of, and even the slightest weird request was taken note of ("can we have the law and order sound effect before every toast?" Yep, he did it!) At the end of the meeting, my fiancee said, "You know what? I was stressed about everything...until today. I just feel like Dan can take care of any curve ball." That peace of mind alone was worth its weigh in gold. Dan called the band before the wedding and coordinated every last detail with them. He accommodated every last weird song request, and had this innate ability to know exactly what to play to keep the crowd on their feet! It was amazing, and perfect, and I couldn't have asked for a better DJ/emcee. Here's the thing. Other places I talked to tried to convinced me I needed a separate DJ, a separate emcee, and a separate singer. Dan did all 3. And on top of everything? The whole booking process could not have been more seamless or pleasant. Quick to respond. Eager to please. Just wonderful beyond the telling of it. Expressway Music was recommended by our venue, but we still interviewed several other DJ companies (to be sure) and it quickly became clear that Expressway was absolutely the best option. DJ Dave (the owner) and his assistant Charissa aren't a huge company, but that means you get extremely personalized care and service - you're not one of many customers being passed around to any available DJ - you're working directly with your DJ on every detail of the event. Dave has so much experience, we felt completely comfortable in his hands and were happy to take his recommendations on things like lighting, microphones, and speakers in the different spaces of our venue. We had only a few months to plan the whole wedding so it was invaluable to us that he knew what he was doing - and he knew the space and other vendors very well. The planning (2 in person meetings and various emails), the contract/payments, and the day-of went so smoothly! We loved Dave at Expressway Music! He not only was a fantastic DJ at our wedding, who managed to get people from at least three countries (UK, US, Colombia) on the dancefloor at the same time and ALL NIGHT, but also organised a fantastic doo-wop group, Spank, to sing in cocktail hour and a lovely jazz group during dinner. He is a very charismatic DJ, a fantastic person, and by the time we went through the whole organisational process with him, he felt like he could be a wedding guest rather than a vendor!
