Mike is so great. I actually scouted him for my brother's wedding after the DJ for his engagement party ended up being gross and making racist jokes and hitting on all the girls half his age. Mike didn't do any of that, for the record. Anyway, Mike kept the party going at my brother's wedding and was also visibly having fun in a professional way (I mean come on, they gave him smoke machines on the stage to play with). And our wedding was no different -- great mix, super professional, overall a great experience. One thing I should point out, too, is that my brother and I have very different wedding music. We recently got married and as the groom I was put in charge of one thing, and really one thing only, the Music. Everyone, and I mean everyone, at our wedding of 130 people said Exxxplosivo killed it. Our Los Alamos wedding hit a cold weekend where the outside temp dropped to the low 50's...but the outdoor dance floor was packed all night long!!! The weather had become a big concern and we were worried and had even considered moving music inside. Mike (Exxxplosivo) just rolled with the punches. We only had one initial meeting and I knew immediately that he was our dude. We wanted a DJ we didn't have to give a playlist to or no play playlist to. Wedding planning is time consuming enough, I didn't want to have to think of songs to play on our special day. NO TIME, man! I wanted someone that could read our vibe and also feed off the crowd. During our meeting, i gave him some ideas of what current artists we listen to and what makes our booties shake, because the two are kinda different from each other. Mike recently DJ'd (is that the right term?) our wedding and did an awesome job! He is definitely the guy to go to if you want a cool "outside-the-box" wedding. Mike stuck right to my rule: No songs that have the instructions on how to dance to them in the lyrics to the song!!! Think about it carefully and it rules out a ton of the crappiest songs ever created. I've always been very picky about music (I do reviews for a prominent online music blog), and I didn't even have to lay down any stiff guidelines. This was essential because we certainly didn't have the time (and neither will you...mark my words!!!!) to hold a DJs hand and make sure he shared in our "aural vision" (whoa). We met with Mike once, he totally picked up on what we were going for, and knocked it out of the park on the big day. Now clearly Mike did a great job with the music, but being a professional wedding DJ (he also does clubs, bars, lounges, etc. so no velvet suit and jerry curl here...haha) is way more than that. Our wedding ceremony was on the beach, not easily accessible, and with the backdrop of splashing waves. He slogged all of his equipment into the sand, set it up perfectly and had everyone hearing every precious, memorable word, even in the face of hurricane-force winds. The one question I asked everyone after the ceremony was, "Could you hear everything all right??" Everyone said yes. From there, he had to drag his gear up to the reception hall--which was even more awkwardly situated--and set everything up for the *immediately* following cocktail hour and reception. Mike nailed it all flawlessly. The reception was a huge hit with Mike really taking the music exactly where I hoped it would go (and democratically dealing with some of my more "opinionated" family members). It's one thing to have a DJ who can follow a playlist and go when and where you tell him, it's another to have someone who can roll with the punches, fix problems, improvise, and use his head when things don't go exactly to plan (guess what, young couples, they won't!!!). A lot of the other reviews further reinforce how Mike's ability to think on his feet and "protect the flow" essentially saved their wedding. I am a huge music psycho, and the DJ was my biggest concern about the whole event. I am 100% glad I went with Mike because he took so much of the headache out of the process and kept it wicked fun! read more

If I wanted a DJ to only play the songs I put on a playlist I would have brought my iPod. We wanted someone who could get the party going, and then keep it going, and he did just that. We met with Mike a couple of months prior to the wedding and went through the logistics of the venue and schedule. We gave him a couple of 'must-plays' and a nice list of 'never-plays' and then said 'do your thing' He even put together a 4 hour playlist for us to play in a separate greeting/older folks room. It was great and I still put on when I need a nice, chill, but sweet mix. He's a tall guy and hard to miss, but he fit in great in a stylish suit and hat and I can't stress enough how much fun our friends had dancing the night away. High heels were off, brows were getting sweaty and never was the dance floor empty. Seriously. We got (and still get) comments about how much fun everyone had and how good the DJ was. First off, Mike saved my life at my wedding. Well sorta, but basically. Short version - We hired Mike as our wedding DJ and he was absolutely terrific! We cannot even think of an insignificant detail to criticize. Longer version - About a year and a half ago Mike was the DJ for a friend's wedding and the music was awesome. Unlike other weddings, where there are usually songs that I don't really want to dance to, I remember not wanting to leave the dance floor. I knew that I wanted him to DJ my wedding (even though I hadn't yet proposed to my then girlfriend/ now wife). Soon after I got engaged, we contacted Mike and booked him for our wedding. We met in person and he was very nice to deal with and very thorough. We had a nice chat where he got a feel for our musical taste and gave us plenty to think about as far as how we wanted the reception to flow. In the time leading up to the wedding he was readily available by email to discuss reception time-lines and song suggestions. The wedding reception ended up going perfectly, and a large part of that was due to Mike's DJ skills. He flawlessly played our requested songs (intros, first dance, etc.), followed the time-line for speeches/toasts, mixed in some of the music that we told him we liked, and did an excellent job keeping everyone on the dance floor with his own selections. There was not one time when a song came on and people left the dance floor. He kept the party going. When it came time to pick a DJ for my wedding, I hopped on to Yelp and did my research. Once I read the reviews and had my initial conversation with Exxxplosivo, I didn't even consider anyone else since I knew he'd be the best man for the job. We played mood music for an hour prior to the wedding, which made our outdoor wedding venue come alive, and our guests happy. We had a song for our best man and maid of honor to walk to, and when it came time for my now husband and I to walk down the path to the altar with a different song, Mike transitioned the song seamlessly. The most creative at blending music!! I'm such the DJ snob, so I was extremely impressed at Mike's mixing. Mike DJ'd for my friends, Danny & Steve's wedding. NOt only does he have a HUGE inventory of the best dance music, but even my boyfriend who is not into music said "wow, he's mixing 3 songs at a time!" but it was so smooth that every song was danceable. He was amazing and he made our night SO MUCH FUN! He introduced an eclectic blend of music that no other DJ we talked to could compare to. He was also organized, professional, and so much fun. WARNING!!! DO NOT HIRE DJ IDIOT!!!! HE DRINKS ON THE JOB!!! Not sure what these other people are talking about but based on the unfathomable way this DJ behaved at my BFF's wedding, he's lucky I didn't hit him with my stiletto. I am so appalled by how this idiot got drunk on the job and how he behaved completely unprofessional. I have been producing large scale events for 10 years and have dealt with every type of DJ you can imagine, all over the country, and I have NEVER seen anyone behave the way he did. My bff is Jen C. and basically after her unannounced and unauthorized cake cutting, the wedding coordinator approached me to basically let someone know in the bridal party that the DJ was drunk and that he had told her to 'eff off' when she reprimanded him about initiating the cake cutting without anyone's permission or knowledge. She was concerned because she felt she had no control. Fast forward to the moment when this jerk slammed a paper down on a table in front of my bff, the bride, and I made a beeline over to this jerk and told to back off before I called in the male calvary. At that point, I wanted her to calm down and we picked her '10 songs' that he would grace us with. At that point, being a business owner for 11 years, a veteran publicist and having endless experience of handling dramatic situations in high stress environments, I made my move. I walked up to him and told him to meet me and another bridal party member around the corner as I wanted to speak with him and that I had his paycheck. He told me to 'eff off' and called the wedding 'a joke'. I basically told him that if he didn't come to speak with me, I was ripping up his check. Of course, he then decided to speak with me. He proceeded to deny the fact that he made the bride cry several times and laughed hysterically since he was bombed. Several male guests saw what was happening and soon enough he was surrounded by the bride and grooms bridal party. He walked away and then proceeded to hit on some random girl, dance with her and play wretched music the rest of the night. The alternative was to ask him to leave and believe you me, we all thought about it. This guy is a complete idiot and he should have never been paid. The bride and groom decided to pay him (no tip) so that they could avoid legal drama since he had already caused so much stress for them. He is unbelievably lucky that they chose to pay him and furthermore, he is lucky that they haven't taken legal action against him. He absolutely would lose given that about 2 dozen family and friends would describe what they saw and how they witnessed him drinking. I had the pleasure of working with Mike to support Cypress Grove's event series, Cheeseboards for Dinner taking place in LA, Chicago, and Philly. Mike listened to what we were looking for, and collaborated to curate the perfect set for us. His selection of music couldn't have been any better for our series, and the vibe he created for us truly sets a special tone for attendees in the room. NEVER USE THIS DJ. Side note: go to the bottom of the page, and click on 'filtered reviews' then you'll see all the REAL reviews on this guy, not just the ones he got yelp to keep. But don't worry, I'm sure he'll get them to flag/remove mine soon too... Quick Summary: If you're looking for the kind of pre-mixed beats this guy does, I recommend creating a playlist on your . At least the iPod wouldn't be a drunken swearing mess who made the bride cry. If I need to explain more: The event (a wedding last month) started out alright, I suppose. The music was boring, and didn't really appeal to anyone. He obviously couldn't read a room. No one danced, but again, the evening was still early. He started to do some "interesting" mixes/mash-ups (Some of which actually were honestly interesting, others just a touch odd (I'm pretty sure he did a mash-up of Empire State of Mind and New York, New York... neat idea, but just because two songs mention the same town doesn't mean they go necessarily play well together)). However, whenever he did anything like that, anything that would actually be DJing...he walked away. They were obviously canned mixes he (or someone else) created ahead of time. What we didn't realize was that he kept disappearing to the bar in the next room - and the bartender who kept serving him free drinks didn't know he was the DJ, and not just a sloppy wedding guest. (We heard later he had arrived drunk, but I can't honestly speak to that, so I'm not sure myself - if so, I'm not sure why someone didn't make sure he wasn't receiving drinks - maybe they thought he'd be smart enough to sober up; not keep drinking). As the evening progressed, he did play some of the requests the bride had made ahead of time, but increasingly became belligerent and loud (did I mention he made the bride cry?). I'm not exaggerating when I say I thought there was going to be a physical altercation between the family and the DJ - but we didn't want to make her more upset. We got her to dance, and grabbed people (who had all migrated to the other room (which in all fairness was a beautiful waterfront patio)) to dance as well to cheer her up and distract her. He then decided to sit himself down with the Bride's brother and aunt, went on and on about his personal problems, and repeatedly swore. The bride's brother, being a respectful person asked him to not swear in front of a lady, but he persisted. At that point, he was just a drunk mess and it was easier to have him sitting down and contained rather than going back to yelling at the bride for asking him to, you know, DJ. I'm surprised by the positive reviews of him here - and maybe he'll be surprised by my scathing one since he probably doesn't even remember the end of the evening. Maybe the guy had a really off day. But when his off day threatens to ruin someone's wedding, that is entirely unacceptable. The only thing that saved the wedding was that the bride and groom's family came together and danced, and reminded each other that it was just fun to all be together, and celebrate such a blessed occasion. However, I would not let that man near anything but a low-budget bachelor's party. On the upside, maybe he'd just play for drinks. read more

Then, stepping out of the fog of lame came Mr. DJ THC Electra! Electra -- aka Mike -- was all of this and more: Professional - Creative - Thoughtful - Friendly - On Point - Wily - Fun My beef with most DJs? They think they're too cool for school. Well, Mike is cool, but also ready for class. He worked overtime with us to craft an evening of Indie-New Wave-Classic Rock-Folk-Funk that had our guests up off their duffs in a hurry. We are extremely anal about our music, and Mike played ball, spinning everything from '60s French Pop to Van Halen to a choice cut from the Mary Poppins soundtrack. WORST DJ EVER. GOT COMPLETELY DRUNK AND RUINED OUR WEDDING. BRIDES BEWARE!!! We really had thought that hiring Mike as the DJ for our wedding was one of the better decisions we made. We met with him and saw him spin downtown, spoke with him a few times leading up to the wedding day and sent a list of preferred songs over to which he said "I had good taste." So we never could have foreseen that he ended up basically ruining a portion of the wedding for us. It started when he proceeded to get really drunk (on our dime at the bar, we actually had to tell the bartender he was not a guest and to cut him off). We had planned on cutting the cake a little later in the night but he informed my wedding planner that he was ready to do it when he wanted to do it, that this was "his gig" and then he told her to "eff off". So while my husband and I were still greeting family and friends we had to rush to the floor to do the cake because it was so unexpected. But I truly wish those were the worst things. I had mentioned to my wedding coordinators that it didn't sound like he was playing a lot of the songs on my request list (because I noticed not a lot of people were dancing). So I asked her to just check in and make sure he had it on him. A few minutes later he accosted me in front of family and friends screaming and creating a scene telling me the last few songs he played were on my list. I was so flustered and shocked that I just apologized and said they must have been so remixed that I didn't recognize them. He then yelled at me "why the f*** would you hire a remix DJ then?" I wasn't under the impression that he ONLY played remixed music! He also said the reason people weren't dancing was because I put a bunch of "old geezers" around the dance floor. The only two tables with "older guests" were mine and my husbands families which were of course seated close to the dance floor and to our sweetheart table. I began to cry in the middle of my own wedding because I felt so attacked and my friends and the coordinators had to steer him back to his equipment. You may think it can't get worse but sadly it does. About 30 minutes later he came over again in front of all of my family and friends while I was talking with them, slapped down my play list on the table and demanded I choose 10 songs that I wanted to hear. I started to cry again, embarrassed by him and the entire situation, and my friend had to take over. He did come up to me one more time while I was on the dance floor and I basically had to beg him to just leave me alone and let me enjoy my wedding. Amongst the lesser offenses were flirting with my guests and even pulling one girl on the floor to dance (a random plus one that I did not know). Later a friend told me he was just playing songs she kept requesting but I can't say if that is true or not because I did not see it. I've actually never once written a bad review about ANYONE on Yelp no matter how bad the service or my experience but I feel like this is necessary so that it doesn't happen to anyone else. I hope you will take this as a warning that although he has a lot of good reviews and is nice enough leading up to the event, there is a possibility that what happened to me could happen to you too. If you don't want to take even that smallest chance, I would suggest just being safer than sorry and hiring someone else. If I can stop this from happening to even just one other bride it will have been worth it. read more

We highly recommend. They were so accommodating, on time and followed all requests for a smooth, awesome, and amazing experience. Mike Bocek saved the day!! My husband & I were kind of a mess in the 2 weeks leading up to the wedding and we still didn't have a DJ. We'd been looking for one for months, but as you know, there are sooo many cheesy DJs out there. We just didn't like anyone. Then, through a brilliant referral, we found Mike. He was absolutely perfect. My husband and I are kinda opposites when it comes to music (he's super obscure indie & i'm 80's rock + hip hop). Mike found a way to please both of us AND all our guests. He killed the cocktail hour and created an amazing vibe throughout our dinner. His set after dinner had e v e r y o n e on the floor. Tasked with finding a DJ for a wedding isn't easy. Tasked with finding a DJ for an office party isn't easy. Tasked with finding a DJ for a wedding-themed office party, that could convey the right feel AND keep the crowd happy - not easy. However, DJ Mike will now make it easy for us from now on, since he is not just any DJ - he is a wedding DJ that doesn't even compare to anything I've ever heard before. I definitely recommend going and listening to some of the tracks on his site - he's up to date with what 'the kids' are listening to now, makes mixes that keeps the crowd going and was just an awesome DJ to have around.
